Waterpipe smoking is becoming fashionable in Lebanon, but no studies have studied nicotine dependence related to waterpipe smoking. A score was constructed from 21 items and subsequently submitted to two factor analyses, which led to the extraction of four factors. Reliability and test-retest reproducibility were measured. Convergent construct validity and discriminant validity also were assessed for different smokers' samples. The Lebanon Waterpipe Dependence Scale-11 (LWDS-11) was composed of four subscales, the first representing nicotine dependence, the second negative reinforcement, the third psychological craving, and the fourth positive reinforcement. Internal consistency and test-retest reproducibility were adequate, and the subscales correlated adequately with measurements of nicotine metabolites, exhaled carbon monoxide levels, and the frequency of waterpipe smoking. The LWDS-11 discriminated between mild, moderate, and heavy waterpipe smokers, based on a threshold score of 10. Results were biologically and psychologically sound. This is the first scale to characterize waterpipe dependence. With further improvement and confirmation, it could become a useful clinical and epidemiological tool.  相似文献

Subcontracting is a common, and sometimes warranted, practice on large construction projects. However, it is also well recognized that disputes are likely to develop between subcontractors and general contractors in trying to achieve target objectives of cost, quality, and time. This paper tackles quality- and time-related disputes that are peculiar to the case of subcontracting asphalt works under a large construction program, such as that of a new airport construction. In particular, it reports on disagreements regarding the achieved thickness and surface smoothness of the constructed asphalt concrete layer, and on activity-interfacing and delay-attribution issues resulting from improper contractual and scheduling practices. Factors believed to be relevant to both classes of disputes are identified, and analyses are offered to pinpoint significant anomalies. Finally, arguments are developed and recommendations given, that reflect best industry practices whose application could help minimize the likelihood of facing such disputes in the future.  相似文献

Vacuum weighing of mass artifacts eliminates the necessity of air buoyancy correction and its contribution to the measurement uncertainty. Vacuum weighing is also an important process in the experiments currently underway for the redefinition of the SI mass unit, the kilogram. Creating the optimum vacuum environment for mass metrology requires careful design and selection of construction materials, plumbing components, pumping, and pressure gauging technologies. We review the vacuum technology1 required for mass metrology and suggest procedures and hardware for successful and reproducible operation.  相似文献

This study was performed to contribute to the analysis of alpha-lactalbumin "molten globule" state by using spectral and proteolysis techniques. Samples of holo and apo alpha-lactalbumin in the presence of different concentrations of ethanol were analyzed. Results of fluorescence spectroscopy of both forms showed that as ethanol concentration increased, the tryptophanyl residues became more accessible to the solvent. Near circular dichroism spectra of holo alpha-lactalbumin indicated that its tertiary structure was maintained in 20% ethanol whereas it was altered in 30 and 40% ethanol. For apo alpha-lactalbumin, spectra were similar in all samples studied. Holo alpha-lactalbumin was resistant to trypsinolysis in 0% ethanol, whereas it was easily hydrolyzed in 20 and 30% ethanol. In the case of the apo form and in the absence of ethanol, 70% of the protein was degraded after 1 h. However, in the presence of 20 and 30% ethanol, the overall reaction rate was lowered. Peptides obtained after tryptic hydrolysis were identified by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Differences in population of produced peptides indicate the changes of folding intermediates present in the studied alpha-lactalbumin solutions. This study demonstrated that proteolytic enzymes are suitable tools to determine protein structure complementing physico-chemical studies.  相似文献

The synthesis, processing, and characterization of new crosslinked functional polymer thin films derived from fumaryl chloride and maleic anhydride is presented. Experimental data demonstrated that this is a versatile, convenient, and cost‐effective method of fabricating ultrastructure crosslinked and functional polymer thin films for potential nonlinear optical (NLO) or other applications where molecular orientation is required. The unsaturated and processable polyester thin films are capable of crosslinking in air to form a hardened lattice under a variety of conditions, including both thermal and photoinitiated crosslinking. The thermal stability of the second harmonic (SHG) signal for a crosslinked NLO thin film was stable at temperatures up to 150°C, which is in contrast to uncrosslinked polymers whose SHG signals typically decreased over 50% below 100°C. Because of the lack of NH/OH groups and their vibrational overtones in the polymer, these crosslinked polyester systems have a great potential for low optical loss applications at 1550 nm communication wavelength. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In light of their environmental and economic interests, food byproducts have been increasingly exploited and valorized for their richness in dietary fibers and antioxidants. Phenolic compounds are antioxidant bioactive molecules highly present in grape byproducts. Herein, the accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) of phenolic compounds from wet and dried grape pomace, at 45 °C, was conducted and the highest phenolic compounds yield (PCY) for wet (16.2 g GAE/100 g DM) and dry (7.28 g GAE/100 g DM) grape pomace extracts were obtained with 70% ethanol/water solvent at 140 °C. The PCY obtained from wet pomace was up to two times better compared to the dry byproduct and up to 15 times better compared to the same food matrices treated with conventional methods. With regard to Resveratrol, the corresponding dry pomace extract had a better free radical scavenging activity (49.12%) than the wet extract (39.8%). The drying pretreatment process seems to ameliorate the antiradical activity, especially when the extraction by ASE is performed at temperatures above 100 °C. HPLC-DAD analysis showed that the diversity of the flavonoid and the non-flavonoid compounds found in the extracts was seriously affected by the extraction temperature and the pretreatment of the raw material. This diversity seems to play a key role in the scavenging activity demonstrated by the extracts. Our results emphasize on ASE usage as a promising method for the preparation of highly concentrated and bioactive phenolic extracts that could be used in several industrial applications.  相似文献

This paper describes a signalling environment for Quality of Service (QoS) negotiation and advance resource reservation in mobile IP networks. This environment is built in conformance with the generic signalling environment, which is standardized by the NSIS IETF working group. The advanced resource reservation protocol, called MQoS NSLP, is based on the QoS NSLP signalling application. It provides to mobile terminals the QoS required based on the user's mobility and QoS profile. In this work, we investigate the use of some techniques of the AI (Artificial Intelligence) domain to implement a user interface called NIA (Negotiation Individual Assistant) in order to determine the QoS profile and negotiate the QoS parameters in the new domain after the handover. Therefore, we use connectionist learning in the management of the negotiation profiles and agent technology to help the user choose the best service provider, dynamically negotiate the QoS on the user's behalf, and follow the user's behaviour to be able to anticipate the negotiation and manage renegotiation. The advance resource reservation is based on an object MSpec (Mobility Specification) which determines the future location of the mobile terminal. The aglycons of the most abundant anthocyanins in food, cyanidin (cy) and delphinidin (del), represent potent inhibitors of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Structure-activity studies show that the presence of vicinal hydroxy substituents at the phenyl ring at the 2-position (B-ring) is crucial for target interaction. The presence of a single hydroxy group or introduction of methoxy substituents at the B-ring results in a substantial loss of inhibitory properties. However, biological activity is not exclusively limited to compounds bearing vicinal hydroxy groups. A contradictory structure-activity relationship is observed for the inhibition of cAMP-specific phosphodiesterases (PDEs). Of the anthocyanidins tested, malvidin, bearing methoxy substituents in the 3'- and 5'-positions, most effectively inhibited cAMP hydrolysis. The absence of methoxy groups and/or replacement by hydroxy substituents was found to strongly diminish PDE-inhibitory properties. We found that either effective EGFR inhibition or effective PDE inhibition is required to achieve a shut-down of the central mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway, a signaling cascade crucial for the regulation of cell growth. This is consistent with the finding that efficient reduction of cell growth is limited to anthocyanidins that are potent EGFR- or PDE-inhibitors including cy and del or malvidin (mv), respectively. In summary, depending on the substitution pattern at the B-ring, anthocyanidins interfere with different signaling cascades involved in the regulation of cell growth.  相似文献

Although corporate governance has emerged as an issue of considerable importance in shaping the organizational structure and the vision of the firm, this entity has yet to receive sufficient scrutiny in the construction industry. The purpose of this study is to determine the extent by which the configuration of corporate governance may impact on the financial performance of construction firms. The investigation utilizes 100 companies of differing sizes. The analysis reveals that a critical mass of outside independent directors and the dissociation of the roles of CEO and Chairmanship of the board do translate into superior financial market returns for the firms. Other corporate governance variables have no apparent impact on the financial performance of the firms. These findings are significant to construction firms that are already established or in the process of being formed.  相似文献
