Behaviour of hexahydrobenzodipyrazolones towards chloroacetylation, aminoalkylation, Grignard reagent and their antimicrobial activity

Treatment of 2,3a,4,6,7a,8-hexahydrobenzo [1,2-c; 4,5-c] dipyrazole-3,7-dione (1) with chloroacetyl chloride gave the 2,6-bis (chloroacetyl) derivative (2), which on treatment with acetic anhydride pyridine afforded (3). Compound (2) when heated with pyridine afforded (1). Compound (1) underwent Mannich reaction with piperidine or morpholine and formaldehyde to give the 2,6-bis (piperidino or morpholinomethyl) derivatives (4a,b). Hydroxymethylation of (1) with formaldehyde gave the 2,6-bis (hydroxylmethyl) derivative (4), which on heating with piperidine afforded (4a), Reaction of 2,3a,4,6,7a,8-hexahydro- 2,6-bis (phenylsulphonyl) benzo [1,2-c; 4,5-?] dipyrazole-3,7-dione (7) with phenylmagnesium bromide gave dodecahydro-3,3,4a,7,7,8a-hexaphenyl-2,6- bis (phenylsulphonyl) benzo [1,2-c; 4,5-?] dipyrazole (8). Derivatives of hexahydrobenzodipyrazolone (9a-g) have been subjected to general screening for their antimicrobial activity.     

Pulp and paper from corn stalks

The whole corn plant was successfully used for the production of pulp and paper by employing comparatively simple procedures of atmospheric pressure digestion followed by multi-stage bleaching. Water pre-treatment was found necessary to remove the dust particles. However, the use of boiling water was not recommended. The effects of the amount of active chlorine in the hypochlorite step on the optical and the physical-strength properties of paper were investigated. One-and two-stage pulping were compared and the effect of depithing after the first stage was studied.     

Some reactions with 3-Methyl-1H-naphtho[2,1-b]pyran-1-one

3-Methyl-1H-naphtho[2,1-b]pyran-1-one 1 has been shown to react with various aldehydes to give the styryl derivatives 2 . Reaction of 1 with P₂S₅ gave the thio-derivative 3 which reacted with aldehydes giving the thiostyryl-derivatives 4 . Hydroxylamine reacted with 1 giving the isoxazole derivative 5 . Hydrazine reacted with 2 giving the pyrazole derivative 6 . Compounds 2 have been shown to undergo DIELS -ALDER reaction to give the adducts 7, 8 and 9 . When 1 was allowed to react with different dicarboxylic acid anhydrides, the phthalide derivatives 10 were obtained, which on reaction with phenol, gave the dihydroxyphthalophenones 11 .     

A study of the surface activity of tertiary alcohol sulfates

A number of tertiary alcohols were prepared by the action of a series of Grignard reagents on ethyl oleate. The tertiary alcohols were converted to alkyl sulfates by reaction with sodium chlorosulfonate. The surface active properties of the prepared sodium alkyl sulfates were studied in relation to the length of the branched chain and the bulkiness of the charged head of the surfactants.
