A mathematical model was developed for simulating a convective batch lumber drying process. The model incorporates mass and heat transfer relationships within the lumber stack, as well as thermodynamic properties of the wood and drying air. It takes into account the change of air properties along the stack and its effect on the mass and heat transfer parameters. The model relies on a drying rate function that is an empirical correlation based on single-board tests. A drying rate function for western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) lumber was developed. The drying rate function was obtained based on experiment results from 500 small boards dried over a range of conditions used in commercial practice. The model was first validated against data available in the literature and then against large batches of hemlock dried in a laboratory kiln. In both cases, the model output was in good agreement with the average moisture content, the drying rates, and the temperatures measured in the larger batches. 相似文献

Spark plasma sintering (SPS) has become a popular technique for the densification of covalent ceramics. The present investigation is focused on the static mechanical properties and dynamic compressive behavior of SPS consolidated boron carbide powder without any sintering additives. Fully dense boron carbide bodies were obtained by a short high temperature SPS treatment. The mechanical properties of the SPS-processed material, namely hardness (32 GPa), Young modulus (470 GPa), fracture toughness KC (3.9–4.9 MPa m0.5), flexural strength (430 MPa) and Hugoniot elastic limit (17–19 GPa) are close or even better than those of hot-pressed boron carbide. 相似文献

Nano-size YAG powder co-mixed with 0.25 wt.% LiF was used to fabricate transparent polycrystalline YAG specimens by means of the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) technique. The presence of the LiF additive in the initial nano-powder allows obtaining fully dense disc shaped (up to 4 mm thick) transparent specimens at the outcome of a 2 h treatment at 1300 °C. The presence of LiF plays a key role in the mass transport related effects during the densification of YAG to full density and also in the elimination of the residual carbon contamination, allowing reaching a level of optical transmittance close to the theoretical value. 相似文献

A new method for the study of pathogen transport in porous media is presented. The method is based on conjugation of fluorescent dyes to target bacteriophages and application of the modified bacteriophages for tracer studies. We demonstrate that the relevant transport determining properties of Rhodamine and several fluorescein-labeled phages are practically identical to those of the native bacteriophages. The advantages of the proposed method relative to direct enumeration of bacteriophages by plaque forming unit method, turbidity, fluorescent microspheres, and other alternative tracers are discussed. Notable advantages include simple quantitation by optical methods, unbiased signals even when virus aggregates are formed, and the ability to decouple inactivation kinetics from transport phenomena. This study measured the effects of including soyhulls as partial roughage replacement in total mixed rations (TMR) fed to 25 pairs of cows during early lactation, on the dry matter (DM) intake, particle kinetics, rumination, in vivo DM and NDF digestibility, milk and FCM yields, and BW changes. The 2 diets used in this study differed in the content of roughage and roughage NDF [23.5 vs. 35.0%, and 12.8 vs. 18.7% in the experimental (EXP) and control (CON) TMR, respectively]. The EXP TMR contained 20.5% less physically effective NDF than the CON TMR (11.7 vs. 14.1% of DM, respectively). These differences were expressed in a greater intake per meal (by 13.3%), a higher rate of meal intake (by 23.2%), a similar number of meals per day, a shorter daily eating duration (by 13%), and a higher total daily DMI (by 7.2%) in the EXP cows as compared with the CON cows. The in vivo DM and NDF digestibility was higher by 4.9 and 22.7%, respectively, in the EXP cows than in the CON cows. The rumination time for the TMR in the EXP cows was 12.7% (54.3 min/d) shorter than in the CON cows, and this was probably related to the difference of 12.4% in physically effective NDF intake between the 2 groups. Patterns of daily rumination and feed consumption throughout an average day showed a delay of approximately 1 to 2 h between the eating and rumination peaks. Particle flow from the rumen of the EXP cows was characterized by a longer rumen mean retention time (by 17.8%) and longer rumination time per kilogram of roughage ingested (by 23.5%) as compared with the CON cows. Thus, favorable conditions for NDF digestion were created in the rumen of the EXP cows, as reflected in their rumen pH values (6.67). The advantage of the EXP cows in intake and digestibility was reflected in a concomitant increase of 7.4% in milk production and of 9.2% in FCM yield as compared with the CON cows. Electroflocculation (EF) is gaining recognition as an alternative process to conventional coagulation/flocculation. The electrical current applied in EF that generates the active coagulant species creates a unique chemical/physical environment in which competing redox reactions occur, primarily water electrolysis. This causes a transient rise in pH, due to cathodic formation of hydroxyl ions, which, in turn, causes a continuous shift in coagulation/flocculation mechanisms throughout the process. This highly impacts the formation of a sweep floc regime that relies on precipitation of metal hydroxide and its growth into floc. The size and structural evolution of kaolin-Al(OH)3 flocs was examined using static light scattering techniques, in aim of elucidating kinetic aspects of the process. An EF cell was operated in batch mode and comprised of two concentric electrodes - a stainless steel cathode (inner electrode) and an aluminum anode (outer electrode). The cell was run at constant current between 0.042 A and 0.22 A, and analyses performed at pre-determined time intervals. The results demonstrate that EF is able to generate a range of flocs, exhibiting different growth rates and structural characteristics, depending on the conditions of operation. Growth patterns were sigmoidal and a linear correlation between growth rate and current applied was observed. The dependency of growth rate on current can be related to initial pH and aluminum dosing, with a stronger dependency apparent for initial optimal sweep floc regime. All flocs exhibited a fragile nature and undergo compaction and structural fluctuations during growth. Doped transparent ceramics with high optical quality can serve as materials for photonic applications such as laser gain media. In that regard, transparent polycrystalline alumina has potential for high-power applications due to its excellent physical and chemical properties, combined with unique doping possibilities. However, optical birefringence of Al2O3 crystals make achieving sufficiently high optical transmittance a processing challenge. In the present study, we demonstrated fabrication of highly transparent 0.5 at.% Cr:Al2O3 ceramics by high-pressure spark plasma sintering (HPSPS). The optical properties of these polycrystalline ruby ceramics were analyzed in order to assess possible laser operation (at 694.3 nm). The obtained ceramics exhibit high in-line transmittance (~72.5 % at 700 nm), equivalent to a scattering coefficient of 2.15 cm?1, and characteristic ruby photoluminescence. The theoretically estimated lasing threshold and percentage of absorbed pump power indicate that such ruby ceramic lasers could operate at reasonable thresholds of 80?225 mW with short lengths of 0.5?5 mm. Thus, HPSPS is a promising method for producing laser-quality doped transparent ceramics for compact laser systems. 相似文献
