A time-domain test for some types of nonlinearity

The bispectrum and third-order moment can be viewed as equivalent tools for testing for the presence of nonlinearity in stationary time series. This is because the bispectrum is the Fourier transform of the third-order moment. An advantage of the bispectrum is that its estimator comprises terms that are asymptotically independent at distinct bifrequencies under the hypothesis of linearity. An advantage of the third-order moment is that its values in any subset of joint lags can be used in the test, whereas when using the bispectrum the entire (or truncated) third-order moment is required to construct the Fourier transform. We propose a test for nonlinearity based upon the estimated third-order moment. We use the phase scrambling bootstrap method to give a nonparametric estimate of the variance of our test statistic under the hypothesis. Using a simulation study, we demonstrate that the test obtains its target significance level, with large power, when compared to an existing standard parametric test that uses the bispectrum. Further we show how the proposed test can be used to identify the source of nonlinearity due to interactions at specific frequencies. We also investigate implications for heuristic diagnosis of nonstationarity.     

Polymerase chain reaction versus culture for detection of Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis in the urogenital tract of adults and the respiratory tract of newborns

The efficiency of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was compared with that of culture for detection of Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis in 726 clinical specimens comprising 189 gynecological samples, 362 urological samples, and 175 samples from newborn infants. The sensitivity of PCR versus culture was 95% for both organisms, while the sensitivity of culture versus PCR was 91% for Ureaplasma urealyticum and 84% for Mycoplasma hominis. Furthermore, PCR tests were faster than culture tests, allowing the time to diagnosis to be reduced from two to five days to 24 h.     

Industrial uses of high erucic oils

Vegetable oils rich in erucic acid have desirable properties for a variety of applications. At present, only a fraction of the potential that exists for commercial exploitation of high erucic oils in the United States is fulfilled with 10 million pounds of rapeseed oil imported annually. Though rape is not a crop in the United States, another member of the mustard family, crambe, has been recommended by the USDA as a practical crop for domestic cultivation. Compared to rapessed oil, crambe oil is more suitable for industrial use because it consistently contains a higher percentage of erucic acid. High erucic oils, as examplified by crambe, can be employed as lubricants in continuous steel casting, in formulated lubricants and in the manufacture of rubber additives. Both the hydrogenated oil and derived wax esters have properties comparable to commercial waxes. Useful nitrogen derivatives can be prepared from either the erucic acid or mixed acids from the oil; behenyl amine is used in a corrosion inhibitor, disubstituted amides are effective plasticizers and erucamide is an excellent slip and antiblocking agent for plastic films. Oxidative ozonolysis of erucic acid produces the dibasic acid, brassylic, and the monoacid, pelargonic. Mixed diacids, mainly brassylic and azelaic, can be obtained by ozonolysis of fatty acids from the oil. Alkyl diesters of brassylic, or of the mixed diacids, are excellent low temperature plasticizers. Two new nylons (13 and 1313), which are derived from C-13 difunctional products of erucic acid ozonolysis, contain repeating units that have longer uninterrupted polymethylene chains than other nylons. Moderate melting points and exceptionally low water absorption are a consequence of this structure. The low-melting characteristic is an advantage in adhesive uses and facilitates fluidized-bed coating, molding and extrusion; low moisture affinity contributes to excellent electrical properties and dimensional stability. The Role of Cations in Some Inorganic Hydrolysis Reactions

Cations which shift certain equilibria from left to right by forming a compound with one of the reaction products were investigated with respect to their kinetic role in the process. Silver ions have no influence on the rate of the hydrolysis of cyanogen iodide. Similarly, cations which form sparingly soluble carbonates do not influence the rate of hydration of carbon dioxide. On the other hand, the hydrolysis of chlorine is accelerated by Ag⁺ and, to a lesser extent, by Cd²⁺ and Fe(III). It is shown that the effect is not due simply to a bimolecular reaction between chlorine and the cation. In the case of Ag⁺, heterogeneous catalysis may play some role, in analogy with the solvolysis of organic halides. In the case of Cd²⁺, there is spectrophotometric evidence for compounds between Cl₂ and HOCl on the one hand, and the cation on the other. It is suggested that these compounds interconvert more rapidly than do the parent substances. A similar mechanism may be operative in the case of Fe(III), and, possibly, also in the case of Ag⁺.     

Alkaline isomerization of methyl crepenynate

Methyl crepenynate (methyl-cis-9-octadecen-12-ynoate) is readily isomerized by potassium hydroxide in ethylene glycol to an 8,10,12-octadecatrienoic acid in good yield. A reaction carried out at 120C for 1 hr in 10% base is sufficient to convert the nonconjugated enyne system completely to conjugated triene systems. Presented at AOCS Meeting in New Orleans, 1964. Taking science education beyond schooling

Abstract

The shape and content of science education has always been articulated from the scientist's perspective. Recently, an increasing number of science educators have recognized the serious limitations of this perspective and have proposed to define scientific literacy from societal or citizenship perspectives. In this article, I argue that these alternatives will remain as limited as their predecessors unless the very structures of schooling are called into question. Furthermore, I argue that alternatives cannot be designed at the drawing board by theoreticians, but have to be grounded in praxis, thereby providing concrete trajectories along which science education can actually change.     

Delineating Boundaries for Imprecise Regions

In geographic information retrieval, queries often name geographic regions that do not have a well-defined boundary, such as “Southern France.” We provide two algorithmic approaches to the problem of computing reasonable boundaries of such regions based on data points that have evidence indicating that they lie either inside or outside the region. Our problem formulation leads to a number of subproblems related to red-blue point separation and minimum-perimeter polygons, many of which we solve algorithmically. We give experimental results from our implementation and a comparison of the two approaches. Inactivation of nitric oxide synthase isoforms by diaminoguanidine and NG-amino-L-arginine

We studied the value of long video-split electroencephalographic monitoring (VSEEG) in detecting myoclonus in nearly SSPE and evaluated the natural history and outcome-affecting factors. The 32 newly diagnosed patients had VSEEG to detect myoclonus and its correlations with EEG periodic complexes. Disease progression was monitored by a special "outcome score'; the chi-square test and multi-variable statistics analysed the outcome score in relation to different variables, such as age at onset, sex, duration of symptoms at presentation, CSF measles antibody titre, type and interval between periodic complexes (EEG discharges). Myoclonus or atonia occurred in all patients and was time-related to the EEG periodic complexes; in 32% of patients, myoclonus or atonia were not clinically evident. The EEG periodic complexes were of 3 types: Type I (16 patients) periodic giant delta waves; Type II (10 patients) periodic giant delta waves intermixed with rapid spikes or fast activity; and Type III (6 patients), long spike-wave discharges interrupted by giant delta waves. Outcome score was associated with symptoms duration (P < 0.01) and EEG periodic complexes (P < 0.05). Symptom duration was inversely related to final outcome (multi-variable analysis). Long VSEEG monitoring greatly improves early diagnosis and detection of subtle atonia or segmental myoclonus. Prognostic factors were the type of EEG periodic complexes and duration of symptoms at presentation.     

How do designers represent to themselves the users' needs?

This paper reports on an ergonomic study carried out during the design of a cutting machine-tool for the composite material in carbody parts casting. During this design process, the users’ needs were inferred by the designers on the basis of their own mental representations of the use of the new device. These representations of the users’ needs, correct or false, play a decisive role in the choice of a solution. The aim of the study is to identify their particularity. Analyzing the design meetings, we have highlighted that users are considered either as subsystems or basic design principles or elements of an imagined scenario. We have shown that these representations are linked to the types of meetings held during the design process. Accordingly, a diversification of the types of meetings should be promoted by the project leader, so that designers extend their points of view of the operators.
