Abstract: Uncertainty often recurs in structural system characterization as well as in choosing the mechanical model and in calibrating it. When analyzing a structure founded in cohesionless soils, the uncertainty in system modeling comes from soil inherent variability, site conditions, construction tolerance, and failure mechanisms. In this research, a Fuzzy-Neural Network method to predict the behavior of structures built on complex cohesionless soils is proposed. The method is based on an Artificial-Neural Network (ANN) for modeling the soil-foundation interaction. Its learning process analyzes over 200 records of building foundations, tanks, and embankments settlements on sand and gravel. Once validated, ANN is introduced in the soil-foundation-sovrastructure interaction model. Using fuzzy sets to define vague and ambiguous variables, the Fuzzy-Neural Network method predicts the system behavior and quantifies the uncertainty of its response. A numerical example shows the method effectiveness in the case of uncertainty in soil parameters and gives suggestions for successive applications. 相似文献

Thermal barrier coating systems protect turbine blades against high-temperature corrosion and oxidation. They consist of a
metal bond coat (MCrAlY, M = Ni, Co) and a ceramic top layer (ZrO2/Y2O3). In this work, the oxidation behavior of conventional and nanostructured high-velocity oxyfuel (HVOF) NiCrAlY coatings has
been compared. Commercially available NiCrAlY powder was mechanically cryomilled and HVOF sprayed on a nickel alloy foil to
form a nanocrystalline coating. Freestanding bodies of conventional and nanostructured HVOF NiCrAlY coatings were oxidized
at 1000 °C for different time periods to form the thermally grown oxide layer. The experiments show an improvement in oxidation
resistance in the nanostructured coating when compared with that of the conventional one. The observed behavior is a result
of the formation of a continuous Al2O3 layer on the surface of the nanostructured HVOF NiCrAlY coating. This layer protects the coating from further oxidation and
avoids the formation of mixed oxide protrusions present in the conventional coating.

Drip irrigation is considered one of the most efficient irrigation systems. Alternatively to the traditional drip irrigation systems, laterals can be installed below the soil surface. Realizing the subsurface drip irrigation (SDI), which recently has been increasing in use as a consequence of advances in plastics technology, making SDI equipment more affordable and long lasting. Due to its potential high efficiency SDI may produce benefits, especially in places where water is a limited source. As the use of SDI is relatively new, a better understanding of the infiltration process around a buried point source can contribute to increased water use efficiency and consequently the success of drip irrigation system. In addition, proper design and management of such a system needs the judicious combination of drip spacing, discharge rates, irrigation duration and time interval between consecutive irrigations. To this aim, numerical models can represent a powerful tool to analyze the evolution of the wetting pattern during the distribution and redistribution processes, in order to explore SDI management strategies, to set up the duration of irrigation, and finally to optimize water use efficiency. In the paper the suitability of the HYDRUS-2D simulation model is verified, at the scale of a single emitter, on the basis of experimental observations, with the aim to assess the axis-symmetrical infiltration process consequent to subsurface drip irrigation. The model was then applied in order to evaluate the main dimensions of the wetted soil volume surrounding the emitter during irrigation as a function of time and initial soil water content. The investigation, carried out in a sandy-loam soil, showed the suitability of the model to well simulate infiltration processes around an emitter during irrigation. In this study, a novel and simple diffractive spectrographic method for real-time measurements of circular dichroism (CD) is considered from a theoretical and experimental approach. A demonstrator prototype of the CD spectrograph has been developed and its performance has been compared with a commercial phase-modulation CD spectrometer. The main element of the device is a polarization holographic grating, recorded in a thin photosensitive organic film, by two interfering opposite circularly polarized beams. A peculiarity of this grating is that the amplitude of the +1 (-1) order of diffraction is proportional to the right (left) circular polarization component of the incoming beam. Here we demonstrate that the CD spectrum of a specimen can be easily evaluated from the intensities of the diffracted beams. A white light beam passing through the specimen is diffracted from the grating and the intensities of the +/-1 orders of diffraction are measured. Due to the spectral selectivity of the grating, the CD at each wavelength can be evaluated at the same time using two linear array detectors. 相似文献

Increasing potassium intake ameliorates blood pressure (BP) and cardiovascular (CV) prognoses in the general population; therefore the World Health Organization recommends a high-potassium diet (90–120 mEq/day). Hyperkalaemia is a rare condition in healthy individuals due to the ability of the kidneys to effectively excrete dietary potassium load in urine, while an increase in serum K+ is prevalent in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Hyperkalaemia prevalence increases in more advanced CKD stages, and is associated with a poor prognosis. This scenario generates controversy on the correct nutritional approach to hyperkalaemia in CKD patients, considering the unproven link between potassium intake and serum K+ levels. Another concern is that drug-induced hyperkalaemia leads to the down-titration or withdrawal of renin-angiotensin system inhibitors (RASI) and mineralocorticoids receptors antagonists (MRA) in patients with CKD, depriving these patients of central therapeutic interventions aimed at delaying CKD progression and decreasing CV mortality. The new K+-binder drugs (Patiromer and Sodium-Zirconium Cyclosilicate) have proven to be adequate and safe therapeutic options to control serum K+ in CKD patients, enabling RASI and MRA therapy, and possibly, a more liberal intake of fruit and vegetables. 相似文献

Trichomonas vaginalis harbors a double-stranded (ds)-RNA virus, and the presence of virus is related to upregulated expression and phenotypic variation of a prominent immunogen (Khoshnan A, Alderete JF (1994) J Virol 68: 4035-4038). To further test the influence of virus on T. vaginalis, virus-infected (V+) isolates were compared to virus-free (V-), agar-cloned progeny trichomonads derived from the parental isolates for accumulation of total proteins and cysteine proteinases. Comparative high resolution two dimensional (2D)-SDS-PAGE was performed of trichomonads grown in a chemostat under identical conditions. At least 47 proteins were identified as specifically expressed by representative V+ isolate 347, and approximately 41 spots were specific to the corresponding V- progeny, showing an association between virus and the presence and absence of parasite proteins. Qualitatively and quantitatively dissimilar cysteine proteinase patterns were detected from numerous V+ isolates and the V- progeny. A 2D analysis for isolate 347 showed the appearance of unique proteinase activities for parental parasites and presence of at least one proteinase in the V- progeny. Finally, the V+ T. vaginalis isolate 347, but not the V- isolate 347 progeny nor other V+ isolates, underwent fluctuations in density during chemostat growth allowing for purification of virus particles from the V+ isolate 347 supernatants during decreased parasite density. 相似文献

A photopolarimeter based on two different kinds of diffraction gratings (a two-grating photopolarimeter) has been developed for real-time measurements of the four elements of the Stokes vector. The main elements of the device are a pure polarization grating and an ordinary transmission grating, both recorded by means of holographic techniques in thin films of organic materials. The first one consists of a diffraction grating recorded by two interfering opposite circularly polarized beams in a Langmuir-Blodgett film of an azo-compound material. The second component is a grating recorded by two interfering parallel circularly polarized beams in a thin film of a photosensitive polymer. Both gratings offer long time stability and good diffraction efficiency. Four photodiodes collect the first-order diffracted beams from these gratings, the output signals of which are read through an analog-to-digital converter by a PC. The optical alignment of the device is easy and the calibration is realized in a one-step procedure. 相似文献
