Biological environments use ions in charge transport for information transmission. The properties of mixed electronic and ionic conductivity in organic materials make them ideal candidates to transduce physiological information into electronically processable signals. A device proven to be highly successful in measuring such information is the organic electrochemical transistor (OECT). Previous electrophysiological measurements performed using OECTs show superior signal-to-noise ratios than electrodes at low frequencies. Subsequent development has significantly improved critical performance parameters such as transconductance and response time. Here, interdigitated-electrode OECTs are fabricated on flexible substrates, with one such state-of-the-art device achieving a peak transconductance of 139 mS with a 138 µs response time. The devices are implemented into an array with interconnects suitable for micro-electrocorticographic application and eight architecture variations are compared. The two best-performing arrays are subject to the full electrophysiological spectrum using prerecorded signals. With frequency filtering, kHz-scale frequencies with 10 µV-scale voltages are resolved. This is supported by a novel quantification of the noise, which compares the gate voltage input and drain current output. These results demonstrate that high-performance OECTs can resolve the full electrophysiological spectrum and suggest that superior signal-to-noise ratios could be achieved in high frequency measurements of multiunit activity.  相似文献

Resolution of inflammation involves removal of recruited neutrophils from inflamed sites via a noninflammatory mechanism, possibly involving neutrophil apoptosis and engulfment/phagocytosis by macrophages. In this study, we describe the reduction in surface expression (> 90%) of the neutrophil molecule Fc gamma RIII (CD16) during in vitro culture at 37 degrees C, which was found to be temporally associated with the appearance of neutrophils with apoptotic morphology during in vitro culture and inhibitable by granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), which postpones apoptosis in the neutrophil. By using dual fluorescence analysis, CD16 "low" expressing neutrophils showed reduced staining with the DNA-binding dye propidium iodide, suggesting that CD16 low expressing neutrophils were apoptotic. Separation of CD16 "high" and CD16 "low" expressing neutrophils by fluorescence-activated cell sorting revealed that morphologically apoptotic cells exhibited the CD16 low phenotype. We did not observe similar marked changes in expression of other neutrophil surface molecules (including other phosphatidylinositol (PI)-linked molecules), indicating that generalized loss of surface molecules does not occur during apoptosis. We believe this to be the first reported cell type-specific membrane alteration in a surface glycoprotein associated with apoptosis, suggesting that the program of cell death in the neutrophil, in addition to morphologic and nuclear changes, includes alterations in expression of surface receptors.  相似文献

The creative industries represent an important and growing sector of the UK economy. This paper explores organizational creativity in firms within the creative industries. A questionnaire based on both Amabile's ‘Organizational Creativity’ model and Ekvall's ‘Creative Climate’ model was completed in ten firms in different sectors of the creative industries. Follow‐up interviews with five firms were also conducted, to compare the outputs from each model as well as the variation in responses from firms in different sectors. The results indicate that both models of organizational creativity are complementary, although not necessarily fully applicable in the creative industries. Specific differences between firms in the graphic design/branding sector and firms in product design were also observed.  相似文献

Although neuroimaging studies have strongly implicated basal ganglia involvement in implicit sequence learning, serial reaction time (SRT) studies with Parkinson's disease (PD) patients have yielded mixed results. The present research sought to examine the ability of people with PD to implicitly learn sequences with different sequential structures and to objectively assess explicit knowledge. A version of the SRT task that reduces motor demands was used to compare 19 patients with PD but not dementia and 37 matched controls. PD patients showed less implicit sequence-specific learning for both sequences and reduced response time improvement over sequential trials for the more complex sequence. A closer examination revealed that the deficit involved higher order sequential associations as well as the learning of pairwise information. Resolution and a cut-free Gentzen system are compared with respect to their efficiency as proof systems for biconditionals in the classical propositional calculus. The relative efficiency is shown to depend strongly on the proof format adopted. If proofs are represented as trees, then resolution can simulate the cut-free system efficiently, but an efficient reverse simulation is not possible. If proofs are represented as sequences, then efficient simulations are possible in both directions. The examples used to show this also show that regular cut-free Gentzen systems cannot simulate unrestricted cut-free Gentzen systems efficiently.  相似文献

In a study of pigs slaughtered at British abattoirs, approximately 23% carried Salmonella in their cecal (large intestine) contents. The most frequent serotype was Salmonella Typhimurium (STM), which was the second most common cause of human salmonellosis in Great Britain. A pig industry-monitoring program was developed to reduce Salmonella infection on British farms. The control of STM infection on the farm requires an understanding of STM transmission dynamics within the herd, and a mathematical model has been developed for an infected grower-finisher farm. The model estimates the probability of a random pig being infected with STM. There are three broad categories of STM infection in pigs: pigs that are infected but unable to transmit the infection (latent); pigs that are infectious, i.e., able to transmit the infection (shedders); and pigs that have stopped shedding but harbor STM in their internal organs (carriers). The model estimates that 21.0% (5th and 95th percentiles, 0.05 to 77.5%) of slaughter-age pigs on an infected farm are likely to be shedding STM. Although this range is wide, it is biologically plausible. Sensitivity analysis of the total number of infected pigs revealed that the most significant input parameters are the probability of effective contact between a specific infectious and susceptible pig and the duration of shedding. The model predicted that 11.5% of pigs would be shedding STM at slaughter age. This value is close to the estimate obtained from a British abattoir survey that 11. 1% of pigs carried STM in their ceca, indicating that the model has reasonable validity.  相似文献

We consider an agent that must choose repeatedly among several actions. Each action has a certain probability of giving the agent an energy reward, and costs may be associated with switching between actions. The agent does not know which action has the highest reward probability, and the probabilities change randomly over time. We study two learning rules that have been widely used to model decision-making processes in animals—one deterministic and the other stochastic. In particular, we examine the influence of the rules'' ‘learning rate’ on the agent''s energy gain. We compare the performance of each rule with the best performance attainable when the agent has either full knowledge or no knowledge of the environment. Over relatively short periods of time, both rules are successful in enabling agents to exploit their environment. Moreover, under a range of effective learning rates, both rules are equivalent, and can be expressed by a third rule that requires the agent to select the action for which the current run of unsuccessful trials is shortest. However, the performance of both rules is relatively poor over longer periods of time, and under most circumstances no better than the performance an agent could achieve without knowledge of the environment. We propose a simple extension to the original rules that enables agents to learn about and effectively exploit a changing environment for an unlimited period of time.  相似文献
