Nature-nurture in the classroom: entrance age, school readiness, and learning in children 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The impact of entrance age on reading and mathematics achievement in 1st grade was examined. Methodological problems with past research were identified, including small size of achievement differences, failure to take background variables into account, and confusion of achievement levels with degree of learning. Using a pre-post design, growth of reading and mathematics was examined in younger 1st graders, older 1st graders, and older kindergarteners. Comparisons of background information on these groups with children who were either held out prior to or retained an extra year in kindergarten, produced minimal background differences. Results revealed that younger 1st graders made as much progress over the school year as did older 1st graders and made far more progress than older kindergarteners. Overall, findings demonstrated that, in itself, entrance age was not a good predictor of learning or academic risk. 相似文献

Mammalian mothers provide water to their young via milk. Rodent mothers reclaim much of this water by licking the anogenital areas of their pups, stimulating reflexive urination and consuming the pups' urine. Male rodents do not provide milk (hence water) to the young, but in some species male parents may nevertheless lick their pups. We determined the amount of water transfer from pups to mothers and fathers in the biparental California mouse, Peromyscus californicus, by injecting 5-, 10-, 20-, and 30-day-old pups with tritiated water and measuring the radioactive label in maternal and paternal plasma after 24 hrs of interaction with their litter. On Days 5 and 10, mothers obtained more pup urine than did fathers. Parents consumed equivalent amounts of pup urine on Days 20 and 30. Mothers engaged in more pup anogential licking than did fathers, which accounted for the difference in pup urine consumption. Salt appetite controls, in part, pup anogential licking in lactating rats (Gubernick & Alberts, 1983). Salt appetite was not implicated in the modulation of anogential licking in the California mouse because the mice failed to display a salt appetite. This study investigates the chemistry of femoral gland secretions in the desert iguana,Dipsosaurus dorsalis (Lacertilia: Iguanidae), and discusses their possible functional significance. Electrophoretic and proton NMR studies indicated that the secretions are composed of approximately 80 % protein and 20% lipid material. Individual differences in polyacrylamide gel banding patterns of femoral gland proteins were found. Reflectance spectroscopy revealed that the secretions strongly absorb longwave ultraviolet light, a feature that may be important in the localization of secretion deposits in the environment. 相似文献

An investigation was carried out to examine the influence of microstructure and chromium on the tensile properties and plane
strain fracture toughness of austempered ductile cast iron (ADI). The investigation also examined the growth kinetics of ferrite
in these alloys. Compact tension and round cylindrical tensile specimens were prepared from ductile cast iron with Cr as well
as without Cr. These specimens were then given four different heat treatments to produce four different microstructures. Tensile
tests and fracture toughness tests were carried out as per ASTM standards E-8 and E-399. The crack growth mechanism during
fracture toughness tests was also determined.
The test results indicate that yield strength, tensile strength, and fracture toughness of ADI increases with an increase
in the volume fractions of ferrite, and the fracture toughness reaches a peak when the volume fractions of the ferrite are
approximately 60% in these alloys. The Cr addition was found to reduce the fracture toughness of ADI at lower hardness levels
(<40 HRC); at higher hardness levels (≥40 HRC), the effect of chromium on the fracture toughness was negligible. The crack
growth mechanism was found to be a combination of quasi-cleavage and microvoid coalescences, and the crack trajectories connect

This study involves the characterization of thin films of copper indium diselenide (CuInSe2) deposited on soda-lime glass substrates using a two-step process. In this technique electron-beam-evaporated Cu-In precursor layers were reacted with an atmosphere containing H2Se gas. The morphological and structural aspects of the CuInSe2 layers were studied (by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction) as a function of the Cu-In film morphology and the selenization temperature profile and exposure time. It was found that the Cu-In precursor morphology has a significant influence on the structural properties of the final CuInSe2 film. Selenization of the Cu-In alloys (irrespective of the structure considered) directly at high temperature resulted in films with poor structural properties. However, a vast improvement in the adhesion properties and morphology of the CuInSe2 films were observed when the Cu-In films were exposed to a reactive selenium atmosphere while ramping the temperature between 150 C and 400 C. Selenization of triple-layer structures (Cu/In/Cu and In/Cu/In) resulted in films with good structural properties and excellent compositional uniformity. 相似文献
