A URI-based approach for addressing fragments of media resources on the Web

To make media resources a prime citizen on the Web, we have to go beyond simply replicating digital media files. The Web is based on hyperlinks between Web resources, and that includes hyperlinking out of resources (e.g., from a word or an image within a Web page) as well as hyperlinking into resources (e.g., fragment URIs into Web pages). To turn video and audio into hypervideo and hyperaudio, we need to enable hyperlinking into and out of them. The W3C Media Fragments Working Group is taking on the challenge to further embrace W3C??s mission to lead the World Wide Web to its full potential by developing a Media Fragment protocol and guidelines that ensure the long-term growth of the Web. The major contribution of this paper is the introduction of Media Fragments as a media-format independent, standard means of addressing media resources using URIs. Moreover, we explain how the HTTP protocol can be used and extended to serve Media Fragments and what the impact is for current Web-enabled media formats.     

High quality double wall carbon nanotubes with a defined diameter distribution by chemical vapor deposition from alcohol

We have synthesized double wall carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) with few defects and little amorphous carbon by hot wall chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of alcohol. Catalysts for the DWNT growth were made from cobalt and molybdenum acetates. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, multi frequency resonance Raman spectroscopy and optical absorption spectroscopy were used for characterization of the product with regard to DWNT yield, the nanotube diameter distribution, defect concentration and amorphous carbon content. Base pressures lower than 1 × 10⁻⁵ mbar in the CVD reactor considerably suppress defects in the DWNTs. Optimized growth conditions for DWNT formation are presented.     

Integrated electronic transport and thermometry at milliKelvin temperatures and in strong magnetic fields

We fabricated a He-3 immersion cell for transport measurements of semiconductor nanostructures at ultra low temperatures and in strong magnetic fields. We have a new scheme of field-independent thermometry based on quartz tuning fork Helium-3 viscometry which monitors the local temperature of the sample's environment in real time. The operation and measurement circuitry of the quartz viscometer is described in detail. We provide evidence that the temperature of two-dimensional electron gas confined to a GaAs quantum well follows the temperature of the quartz viscometer down to 4 mK.
