This study tested the hypothesis that in the llama fetus changes in cerebral blood flow are closely associated with changes in cerebral oxidative metabolism such as occur during transitions between electrocortical states. For the first time reported in any species, instantaneous changes in common carotid blood flow, employed as a continuous index of cerebrovascular perfusion, were related to instantaneous changes in electrocortical activity. Three late gestation fetal llamas were surgically prepared under general anesthesia with vascular catheters, a tracheal and amniotic catheter, and with electrodes implanted to monitor the fetal electrocorticogram (ECoG). In addition, Transonic flow probes were placed around a common carotid artery and a femoral artery. At least 4 days after surgery fetal arterial blood, amniotic and tracheal pressures, carotid and femoral blood flows and the fetal ECoG were recorded continuously. Our results suggest a close association between increases in common carotid blood flow and low voltage ECoG in the llama fetus. Close coupling between instantaneous changes in carotid blood flow and electrocortical states together with the lack of an increase in brain blood flow without increased cerebral oxygen extraction during hypoxemia in the llama fetus supports a fall in cerebral oxidative metabolism in this species during hypoxemic episodes.  相似文献

Adsorption of carbon monoxide at step and terrace sites on a Pt(557) ≡ Pt(s)-[6(111) × (100)] electrode was detected with infrared spectroscopy. Vibrational coupling between adsorbates provided insights into the assembly of molecules at the different structural sites. The intermolecular coupling was weak at low coverages as CO ordered along the steps. For coverages between 40 and 70% of saturation, separate bands assignable to CO on steps and CO on terraces appeared. Coupling across this coverage range was markedly weaker on Pt(557) than on the structurally related Pt(335) ≡ Pt(s)-[4(111) × (100)] electrode surface. The results indicate that, after the steps fill, CO populates the terraces on Pt(557) at random rather than by ordering in alignment with the steps. At coverages below saturation, vibrational bands assignable to CO molecules at step and terrace sites are affected differently by changes in electrode potential. The potential-induced spectral changes for the terrace CO bands are similar to those of Pt(111)/CO, but the step CO bands show deviations from this trend at hydrogen adsorption potentials.  相似文献

We have shown that the Metabolic Control Analysis (MCA) can explain the threshold effect observed in the expression of mitochondrial diseases. As a matter of fact, the effect of a specific inhibitor on the flux of O2 consumption mimics a defect in a step of oxidative phosphorylation. The observed threshold is correlated to the value of the control coefficient of the inhibited step. For this reason, we have studied the repartition of the control coefficients of different steps in oxidative phosphorylation on various tissues (liver, kidney, brain, skeletal muscle and heart). We discuss the results in terms of metabolic control theory and provide a possible explanation for the heterogeneous phenotype of those pathologies. We present the double threshold hypothesis of both a threshold in the energy demand of a tissue and in the energy supply by oxidative phosphorylation.  相似文献

The apparent proton conductivity inside a nanochannel can be enhanced by orders of magnitude due to the electric double layer overlap. A nanochannel filled with an acidic solution is thus a micro super proton conductor, and an array of such nanochannels forms an excellent proton conductive membrane. Taking advantage of this effect, a new class of proton exchange membrane is developed for micro fuel cell applications.  相似文献

Transmission infrared spectroscopy was applied to investigate properties of the perfluorosulfonated polymer Nafion. Measurements were made on thin films formed by casting the polymer from solution onto ZnSe windows. Effects of water vapor permeation were studied. A complex band structure between 1350 and 1100 cm(-1) was analyzed qualitatively by fitting the region to Gaussian functions. Features associated with vibrational modes of -CF(2) and -SO(3)(-) groups were identified and observed to be sensitive to film hydration. The intensities of bands for the -SO(3)(-) modes increased with film hydration, while bands assignable to -CF(2) modes decreased. The results were applied to interpret infrared difference spectra of Nafion and shed light on the complicated features that appear. Vibrational bands for water were also examined. In partially hydrated films, the stretching mode of the free -OH group for interfacial water present in pores and channels of the polymer and bands for hydrated proton clusters were detected.  相似文献

Least squares modeling was applied to gain insights into changes that occur in the structure of Nafion polymer membrane during hydration. Transmission infrared spectra followed changes in the strong polymer bands in the range of 1400-950 cm(-1) during water uptake by initially dry membrane upon exposure to 100% relative humidity atmosphere. Spectra recorded during hydration were fit to a rate equation that modeled the loss of a dry state accompanied by the development of a hydrated state. The evolution of the two states was described by an equation for diffusion in a cylindrical pore in the long time limit. Comparison of the experimental spectra in a data set to spectra calculated from the pure components derived by least squares modeling gave an excellent match for bands of the -CF2 and C-O-C group modes, but agreement was not as close for bands arising from modes of the hydrophilic -SO3(-) group and (modeled separately) water. The differences are discussed in terms of the likelihood that the -SO3(-) groups have stronger interactions with bulk-like water condensed in the membrane and therefore undergo more complex changes than do more hydrophobic polymer regions during hydration. A different model is necessary to describe the evolution of spectral features for water and -SO3(-) end groups during water uptake into Nafion thin films.  相似文献

Prospective relations between individual differences in both lateralised neuro-psychophysiological functions and mood ratings with immune status (CD4 and CD8 counts) were examined in asymptomatic HIV-positive men (n = 27) over thirty months. They participated in a controlled study of zidovudine versus placebo (results published elsewhere). Measures included EEG spectra, neuropsychological tests and mood ratings. A model of reciprocal lateralised influences on the immune system was tested whereby patients with left superior to right hemispheric functions were predicted to show a less deleterious outcome than those with the opposite asymmetry pattern. Prospective relations with immune status were found in the EEG with lateralised theta, alpha and beta activity; among cognitive measures with word fluency, semantic processing, and lateralised motor and recognition memory (word/face) processes; with mood ratings including depression, confusion and the total mood score. The nature of the effects supported the laterality predictions. These unique data, showing that neuro-psychophysiological factors in HIV+ but otherwise healthy subjects predict immune competence and compromise present 2-3 years later, warrant replication in a larger cohort.  相似文献

Results of investigations of the effect of hob wear on the surface layer properties of hobbed gear teeth are presented in this paper. The influence of hob wear on the microhardness, surface roughness, residual stresses and surface layer thickness were investigated. On the basis of the experimental results it was found that hob wear has a significant influence on the surface layer properties of the gear teeth. This influence is most noticeable on the dedendum and root fillet where the gear tooth space is shaped by the bluntest part of the hob cutting edges.  相似文献
