The role of estrogen and progesterone in the regulation of reproductive behavior was studied in female ring doves (Streptopelia risoria) under long vs. short photoperiods. The doves held under long (16 hours/day) or short (8 hours/day) photoperiods were treated for 15 days with saline, estrogen, or progesterone, alone or in combination. 7 days after the start of hormone therapy, the doves were placed with reproductively active males for 4 hours/day for 9 days. No difference was seen in egg-laying, courtship or nest-building by control birds under the 2 photo regimes. Ovarian follicles remained small in all doves receiving hormone treatment. Oviducts of doves receiving progesterone alone remained small in the short-photoperiod group but at long photoperiods the oviducts became enlarged. Estrogen stimulated oviduct growth at both photoperiods wheras the combined hormone treatment resulted in greater oviduct development than estrogen alone (p less than .02). Female soliciting and nest-building activity remained low in progesterone-treated doves under short photoperiod but increased rapidly under long photoperiod. Doves treated with estrogen and estrogen plus progesterone performed considerable soliciting and nest-building. No marked tendency was seen for doves under long-photoperiod conditions to be more active in nest-oriented behavior. Copulatory behavior by the female occurred infrequently in all hormone-treated doves.  相似文献

The theoretical considerations of fitting distributions to aerosol-size spectra derived from optical particle counters are discussed. Based on this, a simple procedure is proposed for fitting the density functions of the commonly used Junge and lognormal distributions, and a special case of the modified gamma distribution. The rapid extraction of variations in evoked potentials (EPs) is of great clinical importance. Parametric modeling using autoregression with an exogenous input (ARX) and robust evoked potential estimator (REPE) are commonly used methods for extracting EPs over the conventional moving time average. However, a systematic study of the efficacy of these methods, using known synthetic EPs, has not been performed. Therefore, the current study evaluates the restrictions of these methods in the presence of known and systematic variations in EP component latency and signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). In the context of rapid extraction, variations of wave V of the auditory brainstem in response to stimulus intensity were considered. While the REPE methods were better able to recover the simulated model of the EP, morphology and the latency of the ARX-estimated EPs was a closer match to the actual EP than than that of the REPE-estimated EPs. We, therefore, concluded that ARX rapid extraction would perform better with regards to the rapid tracking of latency variations. By tracking simulated and empirically induced latency variations, we conclude that rapid EP extraction using ARX modeling is only capable of extracting latency variations of an EP in relatively high SNRs and, therefore, should be used with caution in low-noise environments. In particular, it is not a suitable method for the rapid extraction of early EP components such as the auditory brainstem potential.  相似文献

We present a technique for the organization of pre-synthesized nanoparticles on hard substrates, using block copolymer films as sacrificial templates. A thin block copolymer film is dip-coated on the substrate of interest and the sample is exposed to a solution containing nanoparticles. Spontaneous preferential adsorption of the nanoparticles on one phase of the block copolymer film results in their lateral organization. An oxygen plasma etch is used to remove the polymer film; the nanoparticles end up organized on the substrate. We demonstrate that this is a general approach for the patterning of inorganic nanoparticles on hard substrates, showing the organization of metal and semiconductor nanoparticles having different chemistries at the particle/solvent and solvent/polymer interfaces. The nanoparticle patterns that we present have typical periodicities in the nanometer scale. In some cases, microcontact printing is used to create a double length scale of organization, on the micrometer and on the nanometer level. The characteristic periodicity of the template is studied with respect to the nanoparticle size in order to optimize the organization. Finally, we describe how to extend this technique for the production of continuous gold nanowires on hard substrates. We expect that the flexibility of this approach and the degree of control that can be obtained over nanoparticle organization should make it a powerful tool for nanoscale fabrication.  相似文献

While the cognitive enhancing effects of nicotine use have been well documented, it has also been shown to impair decision making. The goal of this study was to determine if exposure to nicotine vapor increases risky decision making. The study also aims to investigate possible long-term effects of nicotine vapor exposure on the expression of genes coding for cholinergic and dopaminergic receptors in brain. Thirty-two adult male Sprague Dawley rats were exposed to 24 mg/mL nicotine vapor or vehicle control, immediately followed by testing in the probability discounting task for 10 consecutive days. Fifty-four days after the 10-day vapor exposure, animals were sacrificed and expression of genes coding for the α4 and β2 cholinergic receptor subunits, and dopamine D1 and D2 receptors, were analyzed using RT-PCR. Exposure to nicotine vapor caused an immediate and transient increase in risky choice. Analyses of gene expression identified significant reductions in CHRNB2 and DRD1 in the nucleus accumbens core and CHRNB2 and DRD2 in the medial prefrontal cortex of rats previously exposed to nicotine vapor, relative to vehicle controls. Results provide data on the negative cognitive effects of nicotine vapor exposure and identify cholinergic and dopaminergic mechanisms that may affected with repeated use.  相似文献

A direct immunosensor has been developed using an acoustic wave device as a transducer. The device is based on an acoustic waveguide geometry that supports a Love wave. The biorecognition surface, formed on a gold layer, consisted of a biotinylated supported lipid layer which specifically bound streptavidin and, subsequently, biotinylated goat IgG. The modified surface was used as a model immunosensor and successfully detected rabbit anti-goat IgG in the concentration range 3 x 10(-8) - 10(-6) M. Using the anti-goat IgG binding isotherm and the time-resolved measurements of antibody binding, both the binding and rate constants of the reaction were determined. The specificity of each binding step was studied with the acoustic wave device, and it was concluded that the phospholipid bilayer showed a good suppression of nonspecific binding. Comparative measurements using surface plasmon resonance allowed the response of the immunosensor to be quantitatively correlated with mass binding to the surface.  相似文献

A spatially continuous mean field theory of electrocortical activity   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10  
A set of nonlinear continuum field equations is presented which describes the dynamics of neural activity in cortex. These take into account the most pertinent anatomical and physiological features found in cortex with all parameter values obtainable from independent experiment. Derivation of a white noise fluctuation spectrum from a linearized set of equations shows the presence of strong resonances that correspond to electroencephalographically observed 0.3-4 Hz (mammalian delta), 4-8 Hz (mammalian theta), 8-13 Hz (mammalian alpha) and >13 Hz (mammalian beta) activity. Numerical solutions of a full set of one-dimensional nonlinear equations include properties analogous to cortical evoked potentials, travelling waves at experimentally observed velocities, threshold type spike activity and limit cycle, chaotic and noise driven oscillations at the frequency of the mammalian alpha rhythm. All these types of behaviour are generated with parameters that are within ranges reported experimentally. The strong dependence of the phenomena observed on inhibitory-inhibitory interactions is demonstrated. These results suggest that the classically described alpha may be instantiated in a number of qualitatively distinct dynamical regimes, all of which depend on the integrity of inhibitory-inhibitory population interactions.  相似文献
