One important area of modern condensed matter research is the investigation of the nature of the superconducting cuprates. Much progress in this field has been obtained with the technique of neutron scattering. We here present a review of neutron scattering studies of the high-temperature superconductor La2?xSrxCuO4, performed at Risø National Laboratory. We review the work on the mapping of the incommensurate spin fluctuations, the investigation of the gap in the fluctuation spectrum, the magnetic properties of the vortices appearing in an applied field, and the quantum critical behaviour of the system. We discuss our findings in the light of results of neutron scattering from other groups, on other cuprate systems, and results from other experimental methods, e.g. NMR, μSR, STM, X-ray diffraction, and ARPES. We end with a discussion on the implications of the experimental results for the progress in the general understanding of high-temperature superconductivity. Single-event effects (SEEs) in two resolver-to-digital converters (RDCs) have been studied using heavy ions and pulsed laser light. The important role of the pulsed laser in establishing single-event upset (SEU) and single-event latchup (SEL) levels prior to accelerator testing is described, as is its role in evaluating the test software and hardware and in gaining a better understanding of the origins of the SEEs. Results from pulsed-laser testing are in quantitative agreement with those from heavy-ion testing: the RDC-19220 is sensitive to both SEUs and SELs whereas the AD2S80 is less sensitive to SEUs and immune to SEL  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The terminal Gal alpha1,3Galactose (alphaGal) determinant is present on all porcine glycoproteins and glycolipids, but is not expressed by human cells. Consequently human sera contain anti-alphaGal natural antibodies. The human blood group B antigen [Gal alpha1,3(Fuc1,2)Galactose] is differentiated from the alphaGal epitope by the presence of a fucosyl group. METHODS: To determine whether the expression of the B antigen has any effect on the level of alphaGal-reactive natural antibodies, equal numbers (n=12) of A, B, AB, and O serum samples were evaluated by ELISA and flow cytometry. RESULTS: A significant reduction in IgG alphaGal reactivity was observed with serum samples from B antigen-expressing donors (B, AB) relative to non-B antigen-expressing donors (A, O). CONCLUSIONS: These results are consistent with the possibility that anti-alphaGal antibodies in non-B antigen-expressing individuals include a subset that is reactive with the structurally related B antigen and that this subset is absent in B and AB individuals.  相似文献

Asserts that the debate regarding what occurs when people switch to low-tar and low-nicotine cigarettes encompasses 3 research issues—risk reduction, nicotine regulation, and compensation. The various assessment strategies related to the critical issues in cigarette brand switching are examined by (a) tracing the development of current assessment strategies and clarifying the relative strengths of mouth-level, machine-based, behavioral, and biochemical measures; (b) reviewing a variety of biochemical assessments including carbon monoxide, thiocyanate, nicotine, and cotinine; and (c) examining the utility of these measures in risk reduction, nicotine regulation, and compensation studies. Selected findings indicate that machine-based estimates of constituent yield are of little value in smoking research unless they are anchored to a direct measure of exposure. The need for new biochemical assessments of harmful smoke constituents other than carbon monoxide and thiocyanate and research to determine what levels of exposure are associated with what degree of health risk is emphasized. It is suggested that studies of nicotine regulation must use measures of nicotine/cotinine but need not assess smoking behavior or risk and that compensation should refer to factors that account for a particular degree of nicotine regulation. In the present study, the RIBA HCV serotyping SIA was evaluated with a cohort of injecting drug users. Serotyping may be a rapid and cost-effective method of determining genotypes in cohort studies. In this study, hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibody-positive sera from a cohort of 331 chronically infected injecting drug users, of which 167 were coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), were serotyped by the RIBA HCV Serotyping SIA. Among the 331 specimens, serotype-specific antibodies were detected in 250 (sensitivity, 75. 5%), in which serotype 1 was predominant (57.2%), followed by serotype 3 (26.8%). Among the 331 specimens, 164 were HIV negative, and serotype-specific antibodies were detected in 151 (sensitivity, 92.1%), in which serotype 1 was predominant (59.6%), followed by serotype 3 (33.8%). For a subset of 58 samples taken from 19 chronically infected HCV seroconverters with a mean follow-up of 5 years, serotypes were compared with genotypes, which were determined by a line probe assay (HCV LiPa) and by direct sequencing of the products obtained by nested PCR of the 5' untranslated region. Among the 58 samples with known genotypes, serotype-specific antibodies were detected in 38 (total sensitivity, 65.5%), with a specificity of 78.9%. Thirty of these serotypeable samples revealed a serotype that corresponded to the genotype in the 58 samples (total positive predictive value, 51.7%). Of the 58 samples, 23 were coinfected with HIV, and when these were excluded, the total sensitivity increased to 76.5%, with a total specificity of 80.8% and a total positive predictive value of 61.8%. The serotyping assay showed a high total sensitivity (96.3%) for samples positive by HCV RIBA, version 3.0, with four bands. We conclude that the sensitivity of the RIBA HCV serotyping SIA is limited by the immunocompetence of the HCV-infected host. In general, samples from HIV-negative individuals containing genotype 1a had higher sensitivity, specificity, and concordance in the serotyping assay compared with genotyping, whereas samples containing genotype 3a were found to be more cross-reactive and untypeable. Therefore, the prevalence of genotypes other than genotype 1 could be underestimated if they are determined by serotyping, and improvements in specificity are recommended.  相似文献

Targeted therapies are the most attractive options in the treatment of different tumours, including kidney cancers. Such therapies have entered a golden era due to advancements in research, breakthroughs in scientific knowledge, and a better understanding of cancer therapy mechanisms, which significantly improve the survival rates and life expectancy of patients. The use of tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-related apoptosis inducing ligand (TRAIL) as an anticancer therapy has attracted the attention of the scientific community and created great excitement due to its selectivity in targeting cancerous cells with no toxic impacts on normal tissues. However, clinical studies disappointingly showed the emergence of resistance against TRAIL. This study aimed to employ curcumin to sensitise TRAIL-resistant kidney cancerous ACHN cells, as well as to gain insight into the molecular mechanisms of TRAIL sensitization. Curcumin deregulated the expression of apoptosis-regulating micro Ribonucleic Acid (miRNAs), most notably, let-7C. Transfecting ACHN cells with a let-7C antagomir significantly increased the expression of several cell cycle protein, namely beta (β)-catenin, cyclin dependent kinase (CDK)1/2/4/6 and cyclin B/D. Further, it overexpressed the expression of the two key glycolysis regulating proteins including hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1α) and pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 1 (PDK1). Curcumin also suppressed the expression of the overexpressed proteins when added to the antagomir transfected cells. Overall, curcumin targeted ACHN cell cycle and cellular metabolism by promoting the differential expression of let-7C. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to mechanistically report the cancer chemosensitisation potential of curcumin in kidney cancer cells via induction of let-7C.  相似文献

This paper investigates the accuracy with which the age since field planting of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) can be estimated from Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) radiance at pixel and stand scales. The study site, a commercial plantation 30 km south-east of Kuala Lumpur in Selangor, Malaysia, consisted of even-aged blocks from 4 to 21 years old. Spectral data were the six reflective TM bands and three spectral indices. Nonlinear negative relationships between spectral variables and age are compared to published trends in leaf area, stem height and per cent canopy cover for oil palm and other tree plantations. Correlation coefficients between log age and log radiance are moderate and highly significant (p<0.01) for bands 2-5 and 7 (-0.214 to-0.776) at the pixel scale, and increase at the stand scale (r 2=0.985 for log band 5, p<0.01). Relationships are strongest for the mid-infrared bands, especially band 5 (r 2=0.585, p <0.01) and the infrared index (IRI), a normalized difference index of bands 4 and 5 (r 2= 0.48, p<0.01). Direct and inverse linear regression models for log age with log band and log age with IRI squared (IRIsq) were constructed at both scales. Equivalent age was estimated from the models using independent test sets for differing scales and degrees of aggregation of the age classes. Single age classes cannot be estimated accurately at the pixel or stand scales; the lowest RMS error was obtained from the direct model using all bands (RMS error=3.9 years at pixel scale, 2.7 at stand scale). A posteriori aggregation into generalized age classes (<5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-21 years) improved the RMS error but the results were still unacceptably high (2.2, 2.3, 2.7, 6.0 years respectively for direct model 3 using all bands). Acceptable RMS errors down to 0.58 years were obtained for models using IRIsq with generalized age classes developed and applied at the stand scale when variations in ground cover and other variables were averaged out. The spatial pattern of error in equivalent age deserves investigation for precision crop management.  相似文献

Wildfires occur annually in UK moorland environments, especially in drought years. They can be severely damaging to the ecosystem when they burn deep into the peat, killing ground-nesting birds and releasing CO2 into the atmosphere. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) was evaluated for detecting the 18 April 2003 Bleaklow wildfire scar (7.4 km2). SAR’s ability to penetrate cloud is advantageous in this inherently overcast area. SAR can provide fire scar boundary information which is otherwise labour intensive to collect in the field using a global positioning system (GPS). This article evaluates the potential of SAR intensity and InSAR coherence to detect a large peat moorland wildfire scar in the Peak District of northern England. A time-series of pre-fire and post-fire ERS-2 and advanced synthetic aperture radar (ASAR) Single Look Complex (SLC) data were pre-processed using SARScape 4.2 to produce georeferenced greyscale images. SAR intensity and InSAR coherence values were analysed against Coordinate Information on the Environment (CORINE) land‐cover classes and precipitation data. SAR intensity detected burnt peat well after a precipitation event and for previous fire events within the CORINE peat bog class. For the 18 April 2003 fire event, intensity increased to 0.84 dB post-fire inside the fire scar for the peat bog class. InSAR coherence peaked post-fire for moors and heathland and natural grassland classes inside the fire scar, but peat bog exposed from previous fires was less responsive. Overall, SAR was found to be effective for detecting the Bleaklow moorland wildfire scar and monitoring wildfire scar persistence in a degraded peat landscape up to 71 days later. Heavy precipitation amplified the SAR fire scar signal, with precipitation after wildfires being typical in UK moorlands. Further work is required to disentangle the effects of fire size, topography, and less generalized land‐cover classes on SAR intensity and InSAR coherence for detecting fire scars in degraded peat moorlands.  相似文献
