Seasonal fluctuations in the physico-mechanical properties of soils as exemplified by the morainic clayey loams in a section of the Rezhev hydroproject

Conclusions Research that has been conducted has made it possible to establish changes with respect to depth and time in the physical properties of clayey soils isolated in the roof of the moraine horizon of the Moscow stage of glaciation. The dependencies of shearing load on flow index, and compression modulus on permeability also suggest variation in strength and deformation indices with time. The variations have their own characteristic features in all isolated layers. In the median and lower layers, which reside in the zone of influence of structures, the minimum values of the indices of physic-mechanical properties are recorded during the fall, and the maximum in the winter. Th series of values obtained enable us to recommend that the magnitude of these variations be estimated by the introduction of a reducing correction factor to standard indices for surveys conducted during the winter in areas encompassing the Russian lowland. Glass formation in the fluoride system ZrF4-BiF3-BaF2

The glass formation in the system ZrF₄-BiF₃-BaF₂ has been investigated in the composition range (75–30)ZrF₄-(0–60)BiF₃-(0–40)BaF₂, mol %. The synthesis and thermal and optical properties of bismuth-barium-fluorozirconate glass were described. As was shown by the DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) method, at the BiF3 content of 20–35 mol %, glass with the highest stability against crystallization was formed. Further stabilization of the vitreous state can be attained using additives of alkali metals and trifluorides.     

Toxicity of combustion products and smoking of decorative-finishing fabrics

No decrease was observed in the amount of carbon monoxide and dioxide liberated in burning fireproofed fabrics made of Trevira CS fibre and a blend of Trevira CS and polyester fibre in comparison to nonfireproofed fabric. It is necessary to select flame-retardant systems capable of potentiating carbonization of polyester to obtain materials with low smoking and low toxicity of combustion products. __________ Translated from Khimicheskie Volokna, No. 3, pp. 34–36, May–June, 2007.     

Work of deformation in screw rolling

A method is proposed for determining the unit work of deformation in the broaching of blanks in two-roller screw-rolling mills. A new approach is outlined for assessing the fracture risk and the structure of continuous-cast circular billet. Methods for determining the work of deformation in different sections of the deformation zone are considered. The distribution of the work of deformation due to reduction over the whole deformation zone is determined. The influence of extension on the work of deformation is assessed for similar rolling mills at OAO Pervoural’skii Novotrubnyi Zavod and OAO Yuzhnotrubnyi Zavod.
