Fire hazard in transportation infrastructure: Review,assessment, and mitigation strategies

This paper reviews the fire problem in critical transportation infrastructures such as bridges and tunnels. The magnitude of the fire problem is illustrated, and the recent increase in fire problems in bridges and tunnels is highlighted. Recent research undertaken to address fire problems in transportation structures is reviewed, as well as critical factors governing the performance of those structures. Furthermore, key strategies recommended for mitigating fire hazards in bridges and tunnels are presented, and their applicability to practical situations is demonstrated through a practical case study. Furthermore, research needs and emerging trends for enhancing the “state-of-the-art” in this area are discussed.

Biogenic amines in Iranian white brine cheese: modelling and optimisation of processing factors

The simultaneous effects of processing factors such as ripening time (25–75 days), ripening temperature (4–14 °C) and brine concentration (10–13%) on biogenic amines content, proteolysis and sensory score of Iranian white brine cheese were studied, in 12 cheeses. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to minimise biogenic amines content. At low level of ripening time, biogenic amines content decreased with increasing levels of brine concentration but at high level of ripening time, brine concentration had inverse effect. Ripening time showed quadratic effect on biogenic amines content. Based on biogenic amines content and sensory score, the optimum conditions were 13% brine and ripening at 9–14 °C for 43–65 days.     

Hydration of Tricalcium Silicate Followed by 29Si NMR with Cross-Polarization

The use of cross-polarization (CP) NMR in conjunction with magic angle sample spinning (MASS) to examine the hydration reaction of tricalcium silicate (C₃S) is described. In particular the very early stages of the reaction both with and without admixtures has been studied as well as the hydration in a ball mill. The combination of CP and non-CP ²⁹Si NMR permits the distinction between silicate units associated with protons, i.e., in hydrated material, and those in anhydrous material. It has been found that in paste hydration there is steady formation of a small amount of hydrated monomeric silicate units during the induction period. In ball mill hydration the formation of the crystalline calcium silicate hydrate, afwillite, which contains only hydrated monomeric silicate species, can be monitored. These results are interpreted in terms of possible mechanisms for C₃S hydration.

RUNWAY EXTINCTION WITH AND WITHOUT SHOCK AS A FUNCTION OF ACQUISITION REWARD MAGNITUDE.

WHEN RUNNING SPEEDS STABILIZED, EXTINCTION BEGAN WITH 1/2 THE SS IN EACH REWARD GROUP RECEIVING SHOCK IN THE UNBAITED GOAL BOX. AS IN PREVIOUS STUDIES, THE LARGE REWARD GROUPS EXTINGUISHED MORE RAPIDLY THAN THE SMALL REWARD GROUPS AND THE SHOCKED SS MORE RAPIDLY THAN THE NONSHOCKED. HOWEVER, NO SIGNIFICANT INTERACTION WAS FOUND BETWEEN ACQUISITION REWARD MAGNITUDE AND EXTINCTION SHOCK TREATMENT. THE RESULTS ARE INTERPRETED IN TERMS OF THE HYPOTHESIZED MEDIATING EMOTIONAL RESPONSE PRODUCED BY BOTH NONREWARD AND SHOCK.
