Mechanical Properties of Composite Panels Reinforced with Integrally Woven 3-D Fabrics

An investigation is reported in which six three-dimensional cellular fabrics were designed and woven. They consisted of two facings connected by an integrally woven sinusoidal core. In lateral compression, the ratio of the cell-repeat distance to the fabric thickness determines the resistance of the fabrics to buckling. Composite panels were fabricated by impregnating the fabrics with resin. Formulae developed allow the cross-sectional area and second moments of area of the panels to be calculated. Tensile tests were performed on the panel facings and whole structures to measure the Young's moduli and strengths in the longitudinal (weft) and transverse (warp) directions. Flexural tests were made to measure the beam flexural rigidities. The structural analysis of the beam sections together with the tensile properties of the beams enables flexural properties to be accurately predicted. The properties of the 3-D beams in flexure are comparable to those of other engineering materials, but the fabric-based, cellular composites will have advantages as components in composite structures.     

A snapshot of trusted personal devices applicable to transaction processing

In recent years, a clear trend has emerged where businesses need to provide flexible access to its services so as to increase their usage by a much wider cross-section of users operating over public infrastructures but still within a trusted environment. This trusted environment must be established between all participating users and service provider entities before any transactions are carried out. To meet the challenge of enabling mobile users to work within a trusted environment on any untrusted machine, the notion of a trusted personal device (TPD) has emerged. This paper provides a survey giving a snapshot of the growing body of work ongoing in the area of TPDs and the services they support.     

Hardware Security Device Facilitated Trusted Energy Services

We report on our experiences in developing a hardware based security solution for a novel, smart-grid enabled energy services system. In this paper, we first give a background to a new energy services model and then describe how we incorporated a CSIRO developed portable trusted computing platform into a practical, prototype system which assures that all transactions between the energy service company and the consumer are trustworthy, secure and private.     

The EMA system: a CTI based e-mail alerting service

The integration of Internet services and telephony services is a new area for the development of telecommunications services. One example is an e-mail alerting service that uses the telephony network for e-mail notification. The EMA system is a computer telephony integration (CTI) application that checks a user's mailbox on the mail server and informs him/her over the phone when new e-mail arrives, eliminating the need for permanent Internet connection. The EMA system has a Web-based interface, enabling the user to configure service parameters. The EMA system is developed as a distributed and concurrent application. It consists of seven modules: the console, Web interface, Web handler, controller, voice machine, database, and mail checker, using communication solutions based on component object model (COM) technology. This article describes the structure of the EMA system, its implementation, and advantages for users     

Aging of Nanosized ZnO Modified Polyoxymethylene Blends with Ethylene–octene Copolymer

The influence of ethylene–octene copolymer and zinc oxide (ZnO) on structure and tensile stress–strain behavior of polyoxymethylene were investigated before and after ultraviolet weathering. Addition of ZnO considerably improved stress–strain characteristics of the ultraviolet-irradiation impaired composites. Crystallinities of ultraviolet-irradiated composites were affected by numerous competitive processes, including suppression of crystallization in the presence of multiple components in the system, nucleation induced by nanofiller, secondary crystallization and amorphization because of the chain scissions of the macromolecules. Addition of ZnO considerably improved stability of the composites, as testified by corresponding changes in the intensities of hydroxyl and carbonyl absorption peaks.
