South Africa’s Reconstruction and Development Programme set ambitious goals for providing basic services to all, including housing and electrification. More efficient use of energy has the potential to socially and politically support these goals, particularly when it is targeted at low-income communities lacking adequate energy services. This paper examines the economics of energy efficiency for the urban poor from the perspective of society, utilities and poor consumers, using five example programmes. While the five energy efficiency programmes generally have significant economic and environmental benefits from a social perspective, they may not be as attractive to utilities and consumers. Also examined are the policy options for overcoming the significant barriers to energy efficiency, and ways government can bridge the gap between what is good for society and what is good for the electricity industry.  相似文献

This paper presents the validation aspects of a unified numerical framework based on SPH formulation and devoted to the modeling of fluid–structure interaction problems involving large motion of the fluid and large deformation with a possible failure of the structure. The fluid domain is modeled according to an updated Lagrangian formulation. The solid domain (3D and shell models) uses the total Lagrangian formulation. The fluid–structure interaction is treated via a unilateral contact algorithm adapted to SPH context. The SPH framework is verified on academic test cases and validated by simulating an experiment involving the reservoir leakage.  相似文献

Here the interaction between a laminar two-phase, non-pre-mixed counterflow flame and a vortex is examined. Special emphasis is given to the influence of different flame and vortex parameters on the extinction behavior of the flame. Simultaneous planar laser-induced fluorescence of the CH radical layer produced by the flame and particle-image velocimetry measurements of the flowfield are used to characterize the flame-vortex interaction. These simultaneous diagnostics are used for the first time in this configuration. The extinction processes occurring during the flame-vortex interaction can be analyzed by this method, especially the influence of strain at the flame surface. The influence of the droplets on the extinction behavior appears clearly compared with a fully gaseous flame. The spray flame is weaker and extinguishes earlier than does a gaseous flame. In the measurements an additional broadband signal in the vicinity of the CH layer is probably due to the induced fluorescence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, excited at the same wavelength.  相似文献

Several 65 μm thick epitaxial diamond films prepared on (100) Ib substrates by high power pulsed microwave plasma assisted chemical vapour deposition (HP-MPCVD) are studied as a function of surface treatments by cathodoluminescence (CL) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopies. They are either asgrown, or polished, or etched by a microwave oxygen plasma, or after applying subsequently the two last processes. In CL spectra, bands due to defects occur at 2.3 eV, 3.07 eV, 3.7 eV and 4.7 eV, the last one being specific of polished surfaces, with nearly no contrast in the luminescence image. A fundamental result consists in demonstrating that the defects induced by polishing can be removed by oxygen plasma etching. Additionally, in order to assess how luminescence spectra originate from a peculiar depth or not, a bevelled sample is studied. PL spectra are acquired on the sample side while CL spectra are measured at several points on the bevel top side till to the Ib substrate. Comparison of the two sets of result show that the H3 signal originates from the Ib substrate even if it is present in the CL spectra of the film. An analysis of the change in the intensity of the TO free exciton line, defect bands and H3 signal, along decreasing photon energies, as a function of the thickness of the remaining HP-PMPCVD film, is performed with the help of a model taking the diffusion of the unrecombined excitonic pairs and the re-excited photoluminescence into account. CL images recorded at specific wavelengths, which do not show inverted contrast, are also assessed. From these data, the exciton diffusion length is evaluated to 11 μm in the major part of the epitaxial layer except for the first 20 μm close to the Ib substrate where it decreases down to 2 μm. This study sheds light on the interpretation of luminescence spectra excited by an electron beam in undoped diamond layers. Defects bands due to damages induced by polishing and etching processes are also documented.  相似文献

Duocarmycins are highly cytotoxic natural products that have potential for development into anticancer agents. Herein we describe proposed but previously unidentified NH analogues of the DNA‐alkylating subunit and characterise these by solvolysis studies, NMR and computational modelling. These compounds are shown to be the exclusive intermediates in the solvolysis of their seco precursors and to possess very similar structural features to the widely studied O‐based analogues, apart from an unusually high basicity. The measured pKa of 10.5 implies that the NH compounds are fully protonated under physiological conditions. Remarkably, their extremely high reactivity (calculated hydrolysis rate 108 times higher for protonated NH compared to the neutral O analogue) is still compatible with potent cytotoxicity, provided the active species is formed in the presence of cells. These surprising findings are of relevance to the design of duocarmycin‐based tumour‐selective therapies.  相似文献

The metabolism of imipramine by human liver microsomes was examined using a combination of five strategies. Human hepatic microsomes produced N-desmethylimipramine (84%), 2-hydroxyimipramine (10%), and 10-hydroxyimipramine (6%). Preincubation of human hepatocytes in culture with beta-naphthoflavone and macrolides exclusively induced the formation of desmethylimpramine (552%, p < 0.05, and 234%, p < 0.003, respectively). Correlations were obtained between rates of imipramine demethylation and cytochrome P-450 (P-450) 1A2 (r = 0.88, p < 0.001) and P-450 3A (r = 0.80, p < 0.02) concentrations in human liver microsomal preparations from 13 different subjects. Anti-P-450 1A2 and anti-P-450 3A antibodies selectively inhibited N-demethylation (80% and 60%, respectively). N-Demethylation was completely inhibited when anti-1A2 and anti-3A were added simultaneously. Kinetic studies with human microsomes confirm the contribution of two different enzymes in the N-demethylation. The Km of 1A2 was similar to the high affinity Km in human liver microsomes, whereas the Km of 3A was similar to the low affinity Km in human liver microsomes. P-450 1A2 was apparently more efficient than 3A4 (lower Km and higher Vmax) but was expressed in much lower concentration. Human P-450s 1A2 and 3A4 expressed in yeast efficiently produced desmethylimipramine. These results suggest that P-450 1A2 and P-450 3A4 are the major enzymes involved in imipramine N-demethylation in human hepatic microsomes. Similar experiments were conducted using P-450 2D6, and they confirmed that P-450 2D6 catalyzes imipramine 2-hydroxylation. Interindividual variations in 3A4 hepatic content may explain the large variations in imipramine blood levels observed after uniform dosages and thus may explain the variations in clinical efficacy. Caution might be advised in the clinical use of tricyclic antidepressants when drugs are also administered that induce or inhibit P-450s 3A4 and 1A2.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The OECD Principles on Water Governance set out various requirements for stakeholder engagement. Coupled with conceptualizations of social learning, this article asks how we define and enact stakeholder engagement and explores the actual practice of engagement of stakeholders in three fields of water governance. The results suggest that a key consideration is the purpose of the stakeholder engagement, requiring consideration of its ethics, process, roles and expected outcomes. While facilitators cannot be held accountable if stakeholder engagement ‘fails’ in terms of social learning, they are responsible for ensuring that the enabling conditions for social learning are met.  相似文献
