Probing the thermal decomposition process of layered double hydroxides through in situ <Superscript>57</Superscript>Fe Mössbauer and in situ X-ray diffraction experiments

The thermal decomposition properties of Mg–Fe hydrotalcites were studied through in situ ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and in situ X-ray diffraction. Abrupt changes in the quadrupolar splitting measured in the Mössbauer spectra revealed a phase transition from the starting lamellar structure to a new crystalline arrangement. By analyzing the Mössbauer parameters we show that the material is highly disordered in the 300–400 °C temperature range. This hypothesis is confirmed by the X-ray results whose diffractograms indicated the collapse of the lamellar structure and the formation of a solid solution.     

Internal mammary vein to coronary artery anastomotic fistula

Two patients are presented where internal mammary artery grafting was performed for the relief of symptomatic coronary artery disease. At follow-up the internal mammary artery was occluded and a communication between the internal mammary vein and the native coronary artery was demonstrated. These patients were characterised by the early recurrence of angina or the appearance of a continuous murmur. Both patients were treated by re-operation with ligation of the arterio-venous fistula and saphenous vein grafting.     

Interlaboratory ring test of time-resolved fluoroimmunoassays for zeranol and alpha-zearalenol and comparison with zeranol test kits.

Many zeranol immunoassay test kits cross-react with toxins formed by naturally occurring Fusarium spp. fungi, leading to false-positive screening results. This paper describes the evaluation and application of recently published, dry reagent time-resolved fluoroimmunoassays (TR-FIA) for zeranol and the toxin alpha-zearalenol. A ring test of bovine urine fortified with zeranol and/or alpha-zearalenol in four European Union National Reference Laboratories demonstrated that the TR-FIA tests were accurate and robust. The alpha-zearalenol TR-FIA satisfactorily quantified alpha-zearalenol in urine fortified at 10-30 ng ml(-1). The specificity-enhanced zeranol TR-FIA accurately quantified zeranol in the range 2-5 ng ml(-1) and gave no false-positive results in blank urine, even in the presence of 30 ng ml(-1) alpha-zearalenol. Zeranol TR-FIA specificity was demonstrated further by analysing incurred zeranol-free urine samples containing natural Fusarium spp. toxins. The TR-FIA yielded no false-positive results in the presence of up to 22 ng ml(-1) toxins. The performance of four commercially available zeranol immunoassay test kits was more variable. Three kits produced many false-positive results. One kit produced only one potential false-positive using a protocol that was longer than that of the TR-FIA. These TR-FIAs will be valuable tools to develop inspection criteria to distinguish illegal zeranol abuse from contamination arising from in vivo metabolism of Fusarium spp. toxins.     

Benzoquinones, a homoisoflavanone and other constitutents from Polygonatum alte-lobatum

From the rhizomes of Polygonatum alte-lobatum, two new homologous series of 1,4-benzoquinones, polygonaquinones A and B, a novel homoisoflavanone, a new gentrogenin glycoside and 13 known compounds were isolated and characterized. The structures of the new compounds were determined as two homologous series of three 2,5-dihydroxy-3-methyl-6-alkyl-1,4-benzoquinones and three 2-hydroxy-3-methyl-6-alkyl-1,4-benzoquinones, with chain lengths C21 to C23, and 4',5,7-trihydroxy-6,8-dimethylhomoisoflavanone and gentrogenin 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl(1-->2)-[beta-D-xylopyranosyl(1-->3)] -beta-D-glucopyranosyl(1-->4)-beta-D-galactopyranoside.     

解放前我国学者对新疆石油地质的调查和研究

20世纪初，随着近代地质学在中国的形成和发展，一些学者开始了对新疆石油地质的调查和研究，30年代末以前，翁文灏，章鸿钊等学者利用文献和间接获得的资料，对新疆石油资源进行了宏观考察和若干重要油苗的地质研究；40年代开始，黄汲清等地质家在新疆进行实地考察，对独山子油田进行了详细研究，并在南北疆部分地区进行了路线性石油地质调查。     

New HPLC Method to Determine Ethyl Carbamate in Alcoholic Beverages Using Fluorescence Detection

ABSTRACT: A new methodology to the quantification of ethyl carbamate (EC) has been developed. This method allows the analysis by HPLC of ethyl carbamate in samples of wine, fortified wine, and wine brandy, by a pre-column derivatization with 9-xanthydrol, and fluorescence detection. This does not require previous sample extraction or concentration. The method presents an average recovery of 96% among samples studied, a detection limit of 4.2μg/L, and an average intermediate precision of 6.3%. The comparison of the results obtained for EC analysis on the same wine brandy samples by GC/MS and HPLC are statistically indistinguishable with 97.5% probability. The results of the analysis of 42 samples are presented.     

Trypanosoma cruzi: nitrogenous-base-containing phosphatides in trypomastigote forms--isolation and chemical analysis

Increasingly clinicians attempt to base decisions regarding patient management on the results of clinical studies in addition to expert opinion and their own practical experience. In this article, the author reviews the published studies available to assist clinicians to make evidence-based decisions in three topics related to small volume red blood cell (RBC) transfusions for preterm infants; namely, studies examining the effects of RBC transfusions on possible symptoms of anemia such as tachypnea, apnea or other cardiorespiratory irregularities, studies investigating the collection and transfusion of umbilical cord blood and finally studies addressing the duration of storage and use of additive solutions for RBCs for transfusion to neonates. Based on the review of these studies, guidelines for small volume RBC transfusions in preterm infants are suggested.     

Trade-offs in scan path and BIST implementations for RAMs

In this article we propose efficient scan path and BIST schemes for RAMs. Tools for automatic generation of these schemes have been implemented. They reduce the design effort and thus allow the designer to select the more appropriate scheme with respect to various constraints.     

Paraneoplastic syndromes in patients with ovarian neoplasia

The prevalence of several paraneoplastic syndromes associated with ovarian cancer was determined from a clinicopathological study of 908 patients with primary ovarian malignancy in the North East Thames Region. The diversity and rarity of these manifestations are great and the explanation for them is difficult. Circumstantial evidence suggests that in some cases an autoimmune phenomenon is the most plausible cause.
