Today, with the increasing popularity of multicore processors, one approach to optimizing the processor's performance is to reduce the execution times of individual applications running on each core by designing and implementing more powerful cores. Another approach, which is the polar opposite of the first, optimizes the processor's performance by running a larger number of applications on a correspondingly larger number of cores, albeit simpler ones. The difference between these two approaches is that the former focuses on reducing the latency of individual applications or threads (it optimizes the processor's single-threaded performance), whereas the latter focuses on reducing the latency of the applications' threads taken as a group (it optimizes the processor's multithreaded performance). The commonly used LRU replacement policy causes thrashing for memory- intensive workloads. A simple mechanism that dynamically changes the insertion policy used by LRU replacement reduces cache misses by 21 percent and requires a total storage overhead of less than 2 bytes.  相似文献

Brown seaweeds contain a number of bioactive compounds. The xanthophyll, fucoxanthin, has in vivo efficacy against disorders such as type 2 diabetes, obesity and cancer. Organic solvents are traditionally employed to extract fucoxanthin, but carry a toxic chemical and environmental burden. The aim of this study was to optimise a fucoxanthin extraction method using enzymes, water, low‐temperature dehydration and mechanical blending, to produce yields comparable to those achieved with an organic solvent (acetone). Response surface methodology was applied, using Fucus vesiculosus as a model species. A fucoxanthin yield of 0.657 mg g?1 (dry mass) was obtained from F. vesiculosus blade using the enzymatic method, equivalent to 94% of the acetone‐extracted yield. Optimum extraction parameters were determined to be enzyme‐to‐water ratio 0.52%, seaweed‐to‐water ratio 5.37% and enzyme incubation time 3.05 h. These findings may be applied to the development of value‐added nutraceutical products from seaweed.  相似文献

Peptide DIIADDEPLT (Pep19) has been previously suggested to improve metabolic parameters, without adverse central nervous system effects, in a murine model of diet-induced obesity. Here, we aimed to further evaluate whether Pep19 oral administration has anti-obesogenic effects, in a well-established high-fat diet-induced obesity model. Male Swiss mice, fed either a standard diet (SD) or high-fat diet (HFD), were orally administrated for 30 consecutive days, once a day, with saline vehicle or Pep19 (1 mg/kg). Next, several metabolic, morphological, and behavioral parameters were evaluated. Oral administration of Pep19 attenuated HFD body-weight gain, reduced in approximately 40% the absolute mass of the endocrine pancreas, and improved the relationship between circulating insulin and peripheral insulin sensitivity. Pep19 treatment of HFD-fed mice attenuated liver inflammation, hepatic fat distribution and accumulation, and lowered plasma alanine aminotransferase activity. The inguinal fat depot from the SD group treated with Pep19 showed multilocular brown-fat-like cells and increased mRNA expression of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1), suggesting browning on inguinal white adipose cells. Morphological analysis of brown adipose tissue (BAT) from HFD mice showed the presence of larger white-like unilocular cells, compared to BAT from SD, Pep19-treated SD or HFD mice. Pep19 treatment produced no alterations in mice behavior. Oral administration of Pep19 ameliorates some metabolic traits altered by diet-induced obesity in a Swiss mice model.  相似文献

The effect on taste of introducing a heteroatom(s) in place of a carbon atom(s) in sulphamate tastants has been examined in this work. Seventy sets of heterosulphamates and their corresponding carbon analogues (130 compounds in total) were examined. This interesting database was assembled by bringing together series of heterocompounds and suitable nonhetero analogues from the literature, by the synthesis in this work of 15 new heterosulphamates and two new carbosulphamates, which was necessary “to match up” with known carbosulphamate analogues and by making taste predictions for ten carbosulphamates which are unknown, using existing well-established structure-taste relationships (SARs). A sulphur atom replaced a carbon atom in 18 cases, either oxygen or an –OH group replaced carbon in 16 cases, and there are 29 examples where a nitrogen atom or an –NH group replaced carbon. Finally, there are six instances of a “double carbon–carbon, nitrogen–nitrogen substitution” and one of a treble carbon, nitrogen substitution. The overall picture shows that in 33 instances no change in taste was found when substitution occurred, in 29 instances sweet taste (S) was removed giving a nonsweet compound (N), and in eight instances a nonsweet material (N) became sweet (S). Replacement of oxygen by sulphur resulted in the introduction of sweetness in three cases out of four examined. Several important findings were made and a number of new structure-taste relationships have been derived for heterosulphamates.  相似文献

To improve the resolution and the sensitivity of optical metrology, we have constructed an interferometer for vacuum-ultraviolet wavelengths. To examine the influence of the wavelength, especially with regard to the period of the object's structure, we chose an apochromatic design. With reflective optics, wavelengths from 157 to 900 nm can be employed for interferometric measurements. The benefits and also the technological problems that accompany the use of vacuum-ultraviolet wavelengths are discussed. The design of this interferometer and measuring results with different wavelengths are presented.  相似文献

Homoacetogenic bacteria are strict anaerobes capable of autotrophic growth on H(2)/CO(2) or CO, and of heterotrophic growth on a wide range of sugars, alcohols, methoxylated aromatic compounds and one carbon compounds, yielding acetate as their sole metabolic end-product. Batch activity tests on anaerobic granular sludge, using H(2)/CO(2) as a substrate and 2-bromoethanesulfonate (BES) as a specific methanogenic inhibitor revealed that H(2)/CO(2) conversion and concomitant acetate production commenced only after a lag period of 60-100 h. This finding suggests that the homoacetogenic population of digester sludge could be maintained by heterotrophic growth on sugars or other organic compounds, rather than by autotrophic growth on H(2)/CO(2). In the present study, two upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactors were operated at 37 degrees C and 55 degrees C for two distinct trial periods, each characterised by the application of influents designed to enrich for homoacetogenic bacteria. Specific primers designed for the amplification of the functional gene encoding formyltetrahydrofolate synthetase (FTHFS), a key enzyme in the acetyl-CoA pathway of acetogenesis, were used as a specific probe for acetogenic bacteria. The diversity of acetogens in the granular sludge cultivated in each reactor was revealed by application of FTHFS targeted PCR. Results show that biomass acetogenic composition was dependent upon the operational temperature of the reactor and the substrate supplied as influent.  相似文献

Silage effluent is generally regarded as one of the major agricultural pollutants of water courses. Efficient anaerobic digestion of silage effluent was achieved by a 3-day hydraulic retention in an upflow anaerobic filter. The filter was a laboratory scale unit containing a limestone chip support matrix. At loading rates ranging from 7.8 to 14.2 kg COD m−3 active volume day−1, the average COD removal obtained ranged from 86 to 89% with a TOA removal of 82–88%. The methane content of the biogas produced ranged from 81 to 88%. The rate of COD conversion to CH4 was independent of the loading rate under the conditions tested and the observed efficiency averaged 0.357 m1 CH4(STP) kg−1 COD introduced to the reactor.The reactor tolerated considerable variation in influent pH without any apparent decrease in digestion efficiency. It is apparent from the results obtained that a reactor which is in routine use for slurry digestion may also be utilised for silage effluent digestion on a seasonal basis.  相似文献

Betaine, also known as N,N,N‐trimethyl glycine, is a soluble nitrogenous compound present at significant concentrations in sugar‐beet molasses. Molasses is used as substrate in a wide range of industrial fermentations, for example, alcohol, acid and yeast cell production. Betaine is not consumed to any significant extent during these fermentations and appears to largely pass through the subsequent processing stages, becoming an important constituent of the wastewater produced by these industries. The present study confirmed that betaine is present in large amounts in sugar‐beet molasses (up to 6% w/w) and in the effluent of processes using sugar‐beet molasses as substrate (up to 4.5 g dm−3). Betaine appeared to be almost completely degraded in the two full‐scale anaerobic treatment plants sampled. This was confirmed by anaerobic activity tests performed with both acclimated and unacclimated anaerobic sludge. The results obtained suggest the possible involvement of a multistep degradation process, with the likelihood of a nitrogen‐containing intermediate. Finally, although not totally discountable, betaine degradation does not appear to be coupled to sulfate reduction during treatment of high‐sulfate wastewaters. © 1999 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

We have prepared high surface area, conductive, mechanically robust, responsive polyaniline–carbon nanotube composite films. These were produced by filtration from dilute dispersions of polyaniline nanofibers and single-walled carbon nanotubes. Unlike polyaniline alone, these composites are mechanically stable, maintain large intractable surfaces and exhibit greatly enhanced response/recovery behavior to changes in their local environment. This is illustrated by exposing the films to ammonia.  相似文献
