Large datasets are common in chemical and environmental engineering applications and tools for their analysis are in great demand. Here, the outputs of a series of fluorescence spectroscopy analyses are utilised to demonstrate the application of the self-organising map (SOM) technique for data analysis. Fluorescence spectroscopy is a well-established technique of organic matter fingerprinting in water. The technique can provide detailed information on the physico-chemical properties of water. However, analysis of fluorescence spectra requires the application of robust statistical and computational data pre-processing and analysis tools.This paper presents a tutorial for training engineering postgraduate researchers in the use of SOM techniques using MATLAB®. Via a tutorial, the application of SOM to fluorescence spectra and, in particular, the characterisation of organic matter removal in water treatment, is presented. The tutorial presents a step-by-step example of the application of SOM to fluorescence data analysis and includes the source code for MATLAB®, together with presentation and discussion of the results. With this tutorial we hope to popularise this robust pattern recognition technique for fluorescence data analysis and large data sets in general, and also to provide educational practitioners with a novel tool with which to train engineering students in SOM.  相似文献

Rice crops are often subject to multiple abiotic stresses simultaneously in both natural and cultivated environments, resulting in yield reductions beyond those expected from single stress. We report physiological changes after a 4 day exposure to combined drought, salt and extreme temperature treatments, following a 2 day salinity pre-treatment in two rice genotypes—Nipponbare (a paddy rice) and IAC1131 (an upland landrace). Stomata closed after two days of combined stresses, causing intercellular CO2 concentrations and assimilation rates to diminish rapidly. Abscisic acid (ABA) levels increased at least five-fold but did not differ significantly between the genotypes. Tandem Mass Tag isotopic labelling quantitative proteomics revealed 6215 reproducibly identified proteins in mature leaves across the two genotypes and three time points (0, 2 and 4 days of stress). Of these, 987 were differentially expressed due to stress (cf. control plants), including 41 proteins that changed significantly in abundance in all stressed plants. Heat shock proteins, late embryogenesis abundant proteins and photosynthesis-related proteins were consistently responsive to stress in both Nipponbare and IAC1131. Remarkably, even after 2 days of stress there were almost six times fewer proteins differentially expressed in IAC1131 than Nipponbare. This contrast in the translational response to multiple stresses is consistent with the known tolerance of IAC1131 to dryland conditions.  相似文献

The process of torrefaction alters the physical properties of biomass, reducing its fibrous tenacious nature. This could allow increased rates of co-milling and therefore co-firing in coal fired power stations, which in turn would enable a reduction in the amount of coal used and an increase in the use of sustainable fuels, without the need for additional plant. This paper presents an experimental investigation of the pulverisation behaviour of two torrefied energy crops, namely: willow and Miscanthus. A multifactorial method approach was adopted to investigate the three process parameters of temperature, residence time and particle size, producing fuels treated using four different torrefaction conditions. The untreated and torrefied fuels were subjected to standard fuel analysis techniques including ultimate analysis, proximate analysis and calorific value determination. The grindability of these fuels was then determined using a laboratory ball mill and by adapting the Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) test for hard coals. After grinding, two sets of results were obtained. Firstly a determination similar to the HGI test was made, measuring the proportion of sample passing through a 75 μm sieve and plotting this on a calibrated HGI chart determined using four standard reference coals of known HGI values. Secondly the particle size distributions of the entire ground sample were measured and compared with the four standard reference coals. The standard fuel tests revealed that temperature was the most significant parameter in terms of mass loss, changes in elemental composition and energy content increase. The first grindability test results found that the untreated fuels and fuels treated at low temperatures showed very poor grindability behaviour. However, more severe torrefaction conditions caused the fuels to exhibit similar pulverisation properties as coals with low HGI values. Miscanthus was found to have a higher HGI value than willow. On examining the particle size distributions it was found that the particle size distributions of torrefied Miscanthus differed significantly from the untreated biomass and had comparable profiles to those of the standard reference coals with which they had similar HGI values. However, only the torrefied willow produced at the most severe conditions investigated exhibited this behaviour, and the HGI of torrefied willow was not generally a reliable indicator of grindability performance for this energy crop. Overall it was concluded that torrefied biomass can be successfully pulverised and that torrefied Miscanthus was easier to grind than torrefied willow.  相似文献

The water industry in England and Wales has developed over the last century, from small organisations serving local communities to large integrated companies in private ownership, overseen by a government regulator. Asset management practice has developed greatly in the 17 years since privatisation, with companies able to plan their operations and investment as they believe appropriate for the provision of customer services, subject to justifying their plans to the economic, quality and environmental regulators. Investment has flowed into the industry to replace deteriorated assets and to improve the quality of drinking water and rivers. The asset base is complex and, with a replacement value of approximately £231 billion at the 2002–2003 price base index suitable approaches are required to ensure that both the water service and the sewerage service are delivered at the most appropriate long‐term cost. The 2004 UK water industry price review was supported by the introduction of a Capital Maintenance Planning Common Framework to help companies understand and explain their maintenance investment requirement. In this paper, a service‐performance model is proposed to improve managers' understanding of the way in which businesses and the environment change over time, taking account of maintenance and other strategic requirements. Although developed with the water industry in mind, the model is equally applicable to other asset‐intensive industries.  相似文献

This paper considers the structure, regulation and performance of the water industry in England and Wales in the postprivatisation period from 1989. The paper examines the improvements achieved in drinking water and wastewater effluent quality and in the overall performance. The challenges facing the industry in the areas of water resource planning, energy efficiency and chemical consumption, arising from climate change, are also considered. The paper considers how the industry's current approach and attitude towards research and development (R&D) will influence its ability to meet the latest challenges laid down by the regulators. The paper calls for increased emphasis on, and incentive for, R&D in the water industry to ensure sustainable solutions in both water and sewage treatment.  相似文献

Ruptures in wet-steam and single-phase water lines at fossil and nuclear plants due to erosion/corrosion of of the inside surface have resulted in comprehensive measurement of wall thickness of components prone to failure. The large number of components to be inspected as well as the required resolution to make that inspection require effective management of the large amounts of ultrasonic testing data. Recognizing this need, Northern States Power (NSP) Company initiated compilation and organization of a database which contained inspection history, component type and history, flow conditions in the component along with detailed wall thickness measurements. The database was organized using a commercially available personal computer (PC)-based database management software package.This paper discusses the background of erosion/corrosion (E/C) damage at U.S. utilities; the industry response; NDE approaches to wall thinning examination; and practical techniques used to analyze wall thickness data from components and compare data between inspection intervals. Students with high scores (top third) on the essay portion of an Advanced Placement examination and low scores (bottom third) on the multiple-choice portion of the examination were compared with students with the opposite pattern (top third on the multiple-choice questions and bottom third on the essay questions). Across examinations in different subject areas (history, English, and biology), students who were relatively strong in the essay format and weak in the multiple-choice format were as successful in their college courses as students with the opposite pattern, especially in those courses where grades are typically not determined by multiple-choice tests. Although differential essay and multiple-choice test performance was not related to course grades, it was related to performance on other tests. Students in the high multiple-choice/low essay group performed much better than the other group on other multiple-choice tests, especially the verbal section of the SAT. In relation to their performance on multiple-choice tests, students in the high essay/low multiple-choice group performed well on other essay tests. Pigeons in two experiments were first trained with a set of simple discriminations of the form AX+ CX?, BY+ DY? where A, B, C, and D were relevant, and belonged to one dimension, and X and Y were irrelevant and belonged to a different dimension. They were then tested with a discrimination of the form AX+ AY? BX?. The experiments revealed that the discrimination between AX+ and BX? was acquired more readily than between AX+ and AY?, which indicates that the original training resulted in the associability of the relevant stimuli being greater than that of the irrelevant stimuli. Experiment 2 revealed that the status of other stimuli from the two dimensions influenced these changes in associability. The associability of X and Y was enhanced by making other stimuli from the same dimension relevant, and the associability of A and B was reduced by making other stimuli from the same dimension irrelevant. Modern water treatment must maintain an acceptable balance between the microbial safety of potable water supply, the costs of treatment, and the formation of potentially harmful disinfection by-products (DBPs). In order to achieve the optimum balance, it is essential to understand and predict both the formation of DBP and the decay of chlorine, in relation to source water, treatment processes, storage, and supply. Reported herein are new data which demonstrate the lack of durability, precision, and accuracy associated with earlier empirical chlorine decay rate equations. This work develops an improved methodology for the prediction of variation in chlorine decay rates in distribution systems enabling practical, cost-effective prediction of the effects of both seasonal variations and management interventions on chlorine levels at treatment works and in distribution systems.  相似文献
