In this paper we consider A(θ)-stable finite difference methods for numerical solutions of dissipative partial differential equations of parabolic type. Combining two rational approximation methods with different orders of accuracy, where the lower order method is applied n 0 times (n 0 fixed) at each time step, we prove the existence of a second order method which is contractive for all time steps. Moreover, we shed light on the conditions on the lower order method which are sufficient (and sometimes necessary) to obtain the optimal order of accuracy. For the one-dimensional heat equation we construct a family of numerical methods which are contractive in the maximum norm for all values of the discretization parameters. We investigate the performance of coherent analog optical links employing amplitude modulation (AM), phase modulation (PM), and frequency modulation (FM). The performance of these coherent links is compared to that of AM direct-detection (DD) links. The signal-to-noise ratios, nonlinearities, and-spurious-free dynamic ranges (SFDR's) of the foregoing links are evaluated. We calculate the SFDR for links using DFB and Nd:YAG lasers with typical linewidths of 10 MHz and 5 kHz, respectively. The performance of PM and FM links is dominated by phase noise above a critical value of received optical power. For a linewidth of 10 MHz, and SFDR's of PM and FM links are 30 and 31 dB, respectively, for a received optical power above -27 dBm in a 1 GHz bandwidth. For a linewidth of 5 kHz, the corresponding SFDR's above a received power level of 0 dBm are 51 and 53 dB. The performance of DD and AM links is dominated by RIN above a critical value of received optical power. For a RIN level of -155 dB/Hz, the SFDR's of DD and AM links are 49 and 47 dB, respectively, for a received optical power of 10 dBm in a 1 GHz bandwidth. The SFDR's of the DD and coherent links used for transmission of subcarrier-multiplexed (SCM) signals are also derived. We evaluate target laser parameters needed by a number of different applications. For AM video and antenna remoting applications, linewidths of <1 and <3 kHz are required to use PM and FM links, respectively. For FM video, linewidths of <150 and <350 MHz are required to use PM and FM links. For SCM digital applications, linewidths of <80 and <200 MHz are required to use PM and FM links. With confocal microscopy it is possible to study the Concanavalin A (Con A) binding characteristics of the surface and interior of a single cell by viewing optical sections. It was observed in Tetrahymena pyriformis that Con A bound both to the plasma membrane and to intracellular structures. Incubation of cells with a competing sugar a-methylmannopyranoside, decreased binding. Hormonal imprinting with insulin resulted in an increase in binding of Con A to the cell surface and a decrease in intracellular binding. It is possible that the intracellular binding sites may migrate to the plasma membrane.  相似文献

A statistical analysis of compositional data based on the Aitchison geometry of the simplex requires an appropriate basis for representing the data. A simple and intuitive way of building such a basis employs a sequential binary partition of the compositional vector. The partition, together with some statistical summaries of the coordinates, or balances, can be represented in a dendrogram-type graph. In this paper we introduce an implementation of this methodology inside CoDaPack, which is freeware. An example with real data illustrates the use of the Balance-Dendrogram routine.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Australia has a high rate of cardiovascular disease mortality and also a significant proportion of migrants. Little is known about the morbidity experience or cardiovascular risk factors among the larger migrant groups, and this is especially true of the Arabic-speaking population. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the study were to identify the health profile of Arabic-speaking people in Sydney, Australia, to explore the relationship between level of acculturation and health indicators and to identify the morbidity profile of patients presenting to Arabic-speaking general practitioners (GPs). DESIGN: Adult Arabic-speaking patients aged 18-70 years attending 20 Arabic-speaking GPs in Canterbury, Sydney, during the 2-week study period were asked to complete a self-administered questionnaire in Arabic or English while waiting to see the GP. Data on cardiovascular risk factors, level of acculturation and reasons for seeing the GP were collected. RESULTS: Data were collected from 851 patients (62% response rate). Almost three-quarters (73%) of males and 36% of females were considered overweight or obese (body mass index > 25). Of concern, 37% of males and 28% of females were smokers. Females were significantly less likely to have been tested for diabetes (p < .05) or raised blood pressure (p < 0.05) compared with females in NSW. Respondents consumed less bread per day and more fruits than in NSW overall. Respiratory complaints (flu and colds) were the most frequently reported reasons for patient encounters. Except for the youngest age group, males gave more reasons for encounters than females. CONCLUSIONS: Consecutive sampling of ethnic patients attending a GP who speaks their language holds promise as a method of needs assessment with migrant populations. Further, our results suggest that smoking and weight reduction programs are priorities in the Arabic-speaking community. These risk factors are ideal for intervention by GPs speaking the same language.  相似文献

This paper describes an improvement of the technique to measure interfacial tension in immiscible polymer blends. Our method is based on the droplet retraction method, in which one relates the kinetics of relaxation of a deformed droplet to the interfacial tension between the matrix and droplet. Previously, the problem with this technique has been the difficulty in preparing axisymmetric ellipsoidal droplets. In our work, we demonstrate that perfect axisymmetric ellipsoidal droplets are produced at a later stage of relaxation of short imbedded fibers. With this technique, we utilize the strengths of both the deformed droplet method and the imbedded fiber retraction method while overcoming their shortcomings. The interfacial tension value thus obtained was compared to that by conventional methods. Additionally, the effect of confinement by external walls on the interfacial tension measurement was studied. Confinement affects interfacial tension measurement when the gap between the walls is less than two times the equilibrium drop size.  相似文献

Copper–graphite composite materials in the range of 0–10 vol% of carbon phase were prepared from the mixture of copper and graphite powders by hot isostatic pressing. The microstructure, mechanical (tensile strength, elongation to fracture) and physical (electrical and thermal conductivity) properties of composite samples were investigated, and the cross-property connections were calculated. It was shown that electrical and thermal conductivity cross-property (Lorenz number) is almost constant and increases only slightly (no more than 10 % increase was observed). This implies that in the investigated composition range the Lorenz number of a copper–graphite composite system behaves according to Franz–Wiedemann law for pure metals at constant temperature. On the contrary, the conductivity to tensile strength cross-property connections showed significant linear increase (over 200 % in the investigated composition range) for both electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity of composite materials. The cross-property connections of conductivity to the elongation to fracture exhibit a nonlinear dependence on the volume fraction of graphite.  相似文献
