Adsorption isotherms for sodium and trivalent chromium uptake from aqueous solutions onto Amberlite resin were prepared at 18°C. Adsorption of each cation followed the Langmuir model. The rate of uptake of each cation was found to be film diffusion controlled with sodium showing the most rapid uptake. In aqueous solutions containing both chromium and sodium as the only cationic species, it was found that with increasing initial concentration of sodium, the trivalent chromium uptake on the resin decreased substantially. To overcome this difficulty a four step redox–adsorption system has been developed for the removal of Cr3+ from tannery effluents. The first step comprises the oxidation of trivalent chromium to the hexavalent form using selected common oxidising agents. The liquid effluent is then passed through an Amberlite cation-exchange resin in step 2 where the sodium in the waste stream is completely removed. The anionic hexavalent form of chromium (Cr2O) passes unaltered through the resin along with the waste stream. In the third stage the dichromate is reduced back to the trivalent cationic form which is subsequently removed from the waste stream by a second Amberlite ion-exchange bed in stage 4. Each step in this process is assessed in batch and flow mode using simulated and real tannery effluents.  相似文献

A method for the automatic processing of the electrocardiogram (ECG) for the classification of heartbeats is presented. The method allocates manually detected heartbeats to one of the five beat classes recommended by ANSI/AAMI EC57:1998 standard, i.e., normal beat, ventricular ectopic beat (VEB), supraventricular ectopic beat (SVEB), fusion of a normal and a VEB, or unknown beat type. Data was obtained from the 44 nonpacemaker recordings of the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database. The data was split into two datasets with each dataset containing approximately 50,000 beats from 22 recordings. The first dataset was used to select a classifier configuration from candidate configurations. Twelve configurations processing feature sets derived from two ECG leads were compared. Feature sets were based on ECG morphology, heartbeat intervals, and RR-intervals. All configurations adopted a statistical classifier model utilizing supervised learning. The second dataset was used to provide an independent performance assessment of the selected configuration. This assessment resulted in a sensitivity of 75.9%, a positive predictivity of 38.5%, and a false positive rate of 4.7% for the SVEB class. For the VEB class, the sensitivity was 77.7%, the positive predictivity was 81.9%, and the false positive rate was 1.2%. These results are an improvement on previously reported results for automated heartbeat classification systems.  相似文献

This paper examines the value for research and policy development of rental tenancy data collected by the South Australian Rental Tenancy Tribunal (RTT). The data held by the RTT are for South Australia only, but comparable organisations exist in a number of other states, such as New South Wales and Victoria. Lessons learned from South Australia could serve as a pilot for the development of a new (semi-) national framework for monitoring the private rental market.  相似文献

Glasses from a complex SiO2-Al2O3-P2O5-CaO-CaF2 glass series, known as 'ionomer glasses' were investigated. For comparison, a sodium-boro-silicate (s-b-s) glass system, which is known to undergo amorphous phase separation was also investigated. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDX) and BET surface area and pore distribution analysis were the principal analytical techniques used in this study. SEM analysis of the ionomer glass compositions revealed smooth spherical droplets of 2–15 nm while the background morphology appeared rough and speckled. A classic interconnected structure was observed for the s-b-s glass. EDX analysis of the s-b-s glass confirmed that the sodium-borate phase was removed by leaching with 0.3 M HNO3, leaving behind a silica-rich structure. EDX analysis of ionomer glasses leached with 10% NaOH showed that the calcium and phosphate phases were being removed, although not to completion. For the base s-b-s glass a surface area of m 82 g–1 was recorded. However, the base glass after extraction with 0.3 M HNO3 of the sodium borate rich phase gave a BET surface area of 330 m2 g–1 indicating that it had already undergone phase separation on quenching from the melt, giving rise to a fine scale interconnected structure. The leached s-b-s glasses exhibited type 4 adsorption/desorption isotherms characteristic of mesoporous materials. Glasses which had been heat treated at 580°C for 4 h exhibited a surface area of 62 m2 g–1. This indicates that the as-quenched glass is already phase separated and that the phase separated microstructure is coarsening on heat treatment. A surface area of 4 m2 g–1 was measured for the base ionomer glasses. After leaching with 10% NaOH this value rose 10-fold with a maximum surface area of 44.1 m2 g–1 being recorded. The ionomer glasses also exhibited adsorption/desorption isotherms characteristic of mesoporous materials.  相似文献

The relationship between the nanoscale structure of vanadium pentoxide nanotubes and their ability to accommodate Li+ during intercalation/deintercalation is explored. The nanotubes are synthesized using two different precursors through a surfactant‐assisted templating method, resulting in standalone VO x (vanadium oxide) nanotubes and also “nano‐urchin”. Under highly reducing conditions, where the interlaminar uptake of primary alkylamines is maximized, standalone nanotubes exhibit near‐perfect scrolled layers and long‐range structural order even at the molecular level. Under less reducing conditions, the degree of amine uptake is reduced due to a lower density of V4+ sites and less V2O5 is functionalized with adsorbed alkylammonium cations. This is typical of the nano‐urchin structure. High‐resolution TEM studies revealed the unique observation of nanometer‐scale nanocrystals of pristine unreacted V2O5 throughout the length of the nanotubes in the nano‐urchin. Electrochemical intercalation studies revealed that the very well ordered xerogel‐based nanotubes exhibit similar specific capacities (235 mA h g?1) to Na+‐exchange nanorolls of VOx (200 mA h g?1). By comparison, the theoretical maximum value is reported to be 240 mA h g?1. The VOTPP‐based nanotubes of the nano‐urchin 3D assemblies, however, exhibit useful charge capacities exceeding 437 mA h g?1, which is a considerable advance for VOx based nanomaterials and one of the highest known capacities for Li+ intercalated laminar vanadates.  相似文献

Both low-dimensional bar-coded metal oxide layers, which exhibit molecular hinging, and free-standing organic nanostructures can be obtained from unique nanofibers of vanadium oxide (VO(x)). The nanofibers are successfully synthesized by a simple chemical route using an ethanolic solution of vanadium pentoxide xerogel and dodecanethiol resulting in a double bilayered laminar turbostratic structure. The formation of vanadium oxide nanofibers is observed after hydrothermal treatment of the thiol-intercalated xerogel, resulting in typical lengths in the range 2-6 microm and widths of about 50-500 nm. We observe concomitant hinging of the flexible nanofiber lamina at periodic hinge points in the final product on both the nanoscale and molecular level. Bar-coded nanofibers comprise alternating segments of organic-inorganic (thiols-VO(x)) material and are amenable to segmented, localized metal nanoparticle docking. Under certain conditions free-standing bilayered organic nanostructures are realized.  相似文献

The impact of housing inheritance on housing provision has been overlooked in previous work, which has concentrated on quantifying housing wealth and ascertaining whether or not it results in or contributes to social stratification. However, Australian research shows that while housing inheritance may only have modest effects on the wealth of beneficiaries, most of whom are middle-aged home owners themselves, there are important implications for the Australian private rental sector. Many beneficiaries let their inherited dwellings while those dwellings that are sold are often attractive to investors because of their often low capital value and central city location. In contrast to most investors in private rental housing, beneficiaries who become landlords are not always motivated by financial gain. The results suggest that housing inheritance may offer an opportune new source of private rental housing, although like the sector itself, the supply of dwellings from this source is not directly amenable to government control.  相似文献

A facile spin cast route was developed to convert perpendicularly aligned nanorod assemblies of cadmium chalcogenides into their silver and copper analogues. The assemblies are rapidly cation exchanged without affecting either the individual rod dimensions or collective superlattice order extending over several multilayers.  相似文献

Chitosan gel films were successfully obtained by evaporation cast from chitosan solutions in aqueous acidic solutions of organic acids (lactic and acetic acid) as gel film bandages, with a range of additives that directly influence film morphology and porosity. We show that the structure and composition of a wide range of 128 thin gel films, is correlated to the antimicrobial properties, their biocompatibility and resistance to biodegradation. Infrared spectroscopy and solid‐state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to correlate film molecular structure and composition to good antimicrobial properties against 10 of the most prevalent Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. Chitosan gel films reduce the number of colonies after 24 h of incubation by factors of ~105–107 CFU/mL, compared with controls. For each of these films, the structure and preparation condition has a direct relationship to antimicrobial activity and effectiveness. These gel film bandages also show excellent stability against biodegradation with lysozyme under physiological conditions (5% weight loss over a period of 1 month, 2% in the first week), allowing use during the entire healing process. These chitosan thin films and subsequent derivatives hold potential as low‐cost, dissolvable bandages, or second skin, with antimicrobial properties that prohibit the most relevant intrahospital bacteria that infest burn injuries. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
