Since the beginning of the 20th century, in Italy as in many other countries, reinforced concrete (RC) became one of the most popular construction materials and it was used for buildings, monuments, infrastructures, etc. Several of these structures, although of recent formation, have now been included in the cultural heritage, because of their architectural or social relevance. As a consequence of the typical urban or rural exposure conditions of these buildings, they often suffer damage due to carbonation‐induced corrosion of reinforcement, such as concrete spalling or cracking or rust stains that may affect the serviceability of structures. Furthermore, chloride‐induced corrosion of reinforcement, may also concern buildings exposed to de‐icing salts or marine environments. Due to strict requirements related to the preservation of the original materials and texture, the repair of structures that belong to the cultural heritage cannot rely on the conventional repair technique, based on the replacement of carbonated concrete. Therefore, the conservation of RC buildings of the cultural heritage is a challenge, since it requires the development of specific strategies aimed at finding the best compromise between, on one hand, the restoration of structural safety and the prevention of future damage and, on the other hand, the preservation of the original materials and surfaces. This paper analyses the results of inspections carried out on several buildings, built in Italy throughout the 20th century in different micro‐ and macro‐climates, with the aim of showing their peculiarities with regard to steel corrosion and the selection of restorations strategies.  相似文献

Cathodic protection (CP) has become a successful method for the rehabilitation of concrete structures affected by chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcing steel. CP involves applying an electrical current from an external anode through the concrete to the reinforcement. The current causes steel polarisation, electrochemical reactions and ion transport. Normally the anode is placed over relatively large surface areas, including those where the steel is passive. Conventional views assume that protection current will not significantly flow outside the anode area. In many cases this results in a conservative design. This paper presents principles and first results of numerical calculations for design of an example CP system by finite element modelling. The final objective is to develop a tool for more economical CP system design. In particular, a CP system for the protection of local damage in bridges (e.g. at leaking joints) has been simulated. The corroding area with respect to the size of the anode is varied. Current and potential distributions and depolarisation values are predicted, both close to and more distant from the anode. It appears that current densities required to achieve sufficient polarisation are much higher than those usually found in the field. Neglecting time-dependent repassivation processes is likely to be the main cause and further work is needed to include them. The present model can be used with reasonable confidence for preventive application to passive steel.  相似文献

The European Directive 2002/91 will enforce the Member State to promote the implementation of new measures, instruments and calculation methodology to improve the buildings energy performances. The thermal performance and quality of the Italian residential buildings is generally poor, depending on the age of the building stock and the lack of application of the existing energy regulations. This study aims at demonstrating the global benefits of good insulated building envelopes. Energy benefits are easy to understand, meanwhile the economic issues are critical, since the final users see them as an additional useless extra cost for the dwelling at the purchase phase, with small attention to the future managing costs. The study demonstrates that significant economic advantages come out from high–performance building envelope. The study also shows that environmental extra loads due to a bigger use of the insulating material is paid back in few years, with consistent social benefits, if the life cycle of the building is taken into account.  相似文献

The reduction of air-conditioning energy consumptions is one of the main indicators to act on when improving the energy efficiency in buildings.In the case of advanced technological buildings, a meaningful contribution to the thermal loads and the energy consumptions reduction could depend on the correct configuration and management of the envelope systems. In recent years, the architectural trend toward highly transparent all-glass buildings presents a unique challenge and opportunity to advance the market for emerging, smart, dynamic window and dimmable daylighting control technologies (Lee et al., 2004).A prototype dynamic glazing system was developed and tested at ITC-CNR; it is aimed at actively responding to the external environmental loads. Both an experimental campaign and analyses by theoretical models were carried out, aimed at evaluating the possible configurations depending on different weather conditions in several possible places. Therefore, the analytical models of the building-plant system were defined by using a dynamic energy simulation software (EnergyPlus).The variables that determine the system performance, also influenced by the boundary conditions, were analysed, such as U- and g-value; they concern both the morphology of the envelope system, such as dimensions, shading and glazing type, gap airflow thickness, in-gap airflow rate, and management, in terms of control algorithm parameters tuning fan and shading systems, as a function of the weather conditions.The configuration able to provide the best performances was finally identified by also assessing such performances, integrating the dynamic system in several building types and under different weather conditions.The dynamic envelope system prototype has become a commercial product with some applications in façade systems, curtain walls and windows.The paper describes the methodological approach to prototype development and the main results obtained, including simulations of possible applications on real buildings.  相似文献

Impressive inhibition of tumor growth has been observed after transduction of cytokine genes into tumor cells. Secreted cytokines do not affect the proliferation of a tumor directly but activate a host immune reaction strong enough to overcome its oncogenic capacity. However, the reaction mechanisms activated are difficult to interpret; because these mechanisms have been derived from experiments with different tumors, comparisons are hindered. To compare the reactive mechanisms induced by each cytokine, BALB/c mice were challenged with the parental cells of the syngeneic spontaneous mammary adenocarcinoma TSA, or with TSA cells engineered to release IL2, IL4, IL7, IL10, IFN alpha, IFN gamma, and TNF alpha, and the tumor growth area was studied histologically, ultrastructurally, and immunohistochemically. These observations were integrated with data on the growth and rejection patterns of TSA cells in mice depleted of natural killer (NK) cells, granulocytes, CD4+, or CD8+ lymphocytes. The rejection of TSA-IL2 and TSA-TNF alpha cells was associated with the massive presence of neutrophils, that of TSA-IL4 and TSA-IL7 cells with neutrophils and very small areas of colliquative necrosis, and that of TSA-IFN alpha and TSA-IL10 cells with extensive areas of ischemic-coagulative necrosis and some neutrophils. TSA-IFN gamma cells displayed a delay in growth, but were not rejected. Their growth areas comprised necrotic zones of ischemic necrosis devoid of neutrophils. The selective depletion experiments demonstrated that rejection of engineered TSA cells depends on several leukocyte populations. The weight of each population varied with the secreted cytokine, although neutrophils and CD8+ lymphocytes constantly played the major role. Employment of the same tumor line engineered with the genes of different cytokines showed that each cytokine evokes a distinct reaction and that tumor inhibition results from a complex mechanism in which neutrophils and CD8+ lymphocytes and ischemic necrosis are of primary importance.  相似文献

The paper investigates the possibility to use electroosmosis to transport nanosilica (NS) particles inside carbonated concrete, in order to exert a filler effect and enhance its durability performance. This method aims to extending possible beneficial effects of NS to existing reinforced concrete structures, where the presence of a carbonated layer of concrete is very likely. Injection tests were performed with electrochemical cells on carbonated concrete discs with water/cement (w/c) ratios of 0.50, 0.55 and 0.65, using a NS aqueous suspension at the anode. The results indicated that a flow did occur through the concrete disc and it was directed from the anode towards the cathode. A linear relationship between flux and applied voltage gradient was obtained, which is typical of electroosmotic phenomena. The bulk properties of concrete, such as density, water absorption and sorptivity, were not affected by the injection tests, whilst electrical resistivity increased indicating a mild ‘sealing’ effect on the surface. Also microstructural analyses highlighted the local presence of NS that decreased the local porosity close to the surface.  相似文献

We recently reported that rhabdomyosarcoma cell lines express and secrete interleukin 15 (IL-15), a tightly regulated cytokine with IL-2-like activity. To test whether the p53-impaired function that is frequently found in this tumour type could play a role in the IL-15 production, wild-type p53 gene was transduced in the human rhabdomyosarcoma cell line RD (which harbours a mutated p53 gene), and its effect on proliferation and expression of IL-15 was studied. Arrest of proliferation was induced by wild-type p53; increased proportions of G1-arrested cells and of apoptotic cells were observed. A marked down-modulation of IL-15 expression, at both the mRNA and protein level, was found in p53-transduced cells. Because a direct effect of IL-15 on normal muscle cells has been reported, the presence of IL-15 membrane receptors was studied by cytofluorometric analysis. Rhabdomyosarcoma cells showed IL-15 membrane receptors, which are down-modulated by wild-type p53 transfected gene. In conclusion, wild-type p53 transduction in human rhabdomyosarcoma cells induces the down-modulation of both IL-15 production and IL-15 receptor expression.  相似文献
