The dose rate dependence of heat radiosensitization was studied using rat astrocytoma cells in culture and a clinically relevant protocol of heat dose and heat radiation sequence. Cells were treated with a minimally toxic heat dose of 43 degrees C for 30 minutes, after which they were irradiated with varying doses of radiation at dose rates ranging from 0.567 to 300 cGy/min. This heat dose substantially reduced the extrapolation number (n), but had little effect on Do of the radiation survival curve at dose rates of 50 cGy/min or greater. At dose rates less than 10 cGy/min, 43 degrees C for 30 min had little effect on n and only for the lowest dose rate studied (0.567 cGy/min) was there a significant reduction in Do (60%). The thermal enhancement ratio did not vary inversely with radiation dose rate over the dose rate range studied but, instead, was maximal at the two dose rate extremes (0.567 and 300 cGy/min). These data demonstrate that a clinically relevant heat dose enhances very low dose rate, as well as high dose rate, ionizing radiation, but suggest that little benefit is to be gained from using dose rates intermediate between conventional radiotherapeutic high dose rates or dose rates representative of interstitial implants.  相似文献

In this study, we prepared immiscible blends of 75 wt % polylactide (PLA) with 25 wt % poly[(butylene adipate)-co-terephthalate] (PBAT) through an injection-molding (IM) process and a twin-screw extruder (TSE) followed by IM. An amorphous polylactide (A-PLA) and a semicrystalline polylactide (SC-PLA) were used as the matrixes to investigate the matrix crystallization effect on the morphology and property development of the blends with only IM. A blend of A-PLA with 25 wt % poly[(butylene succinate)-co-adipate] (PBSA) was also prepared through IM to compare its properties with those of the A-PLA–PBAT blends. The morphological, thermal, solid viscoelastic, tensile, and flexural properties of the blends were compared, and their dependency on the evolution of the blend morphology was analyzed. The tensile results show that when IM was used as the sole processing technique, the ductility and toughness were significantly improved only when SC-PLA was used as the matrix. Preprocessing through TSE also resulted in the enhancement of the blend ductility. In A-PLA–PBSA, the vitrification of PLA hindered the crystallization of PBSA to very low temperatures (<0°C) and resulted in a very nonuniform structure with weak intermolecular bonding between phases. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study reports on the mechanochemical synthesis (MCS) of SiO2-encapsulated WSi2/W5Si3 nanoparticles starting from tungsten oxide (WO3), silicon dioxide (SiO2) and magnesium (Mg) powder blends. MCS process, carried out in a high-energy ball mill, was evaluated in terms of various milling time and initial composition of WO3-SiO2-Mg powders. A subsequent purification step using aqueous HCl solution was conducted on the as-synthesized powders. Compositional, microstructural and thermal properties of the powders were characterized by using X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Based on the adiabatic temperature values, SiO2-encapsulated WSi2/W5Si3 nanoparticles exhibit a high potential as a result of a mechanically induced self-sustaining reaction. The exothermic reaction took place after 20?min of milling, and WSi2, W5Si3, W, MgO, Mg2SiO4 and residual Mg phases were detected. The utilization of an optimized amount of excess Mg (3.5?mol) resulted in the elimination of unwanted Mg2SiO4 and W phases, leaving behind WSi2, W5Si3, Mg2Si, MgO and Mg. After removal of Mg-based by-products by leaching process, WSi2, W5Si3 and a very small amount of SiO2 phases were obtained. TEM analysis revealed that W silicide nanoparticles with an average size of 97?nm were encapsulated by SiO2 layers with an average thickness of 15?nm.  相似文献
