Enhanced surface-excitonic emission in ZnO/Al(2)O(3) core-shell nanowires

We report the influence of an Al(2)O(3) shell on the photoluminescence emission of ZnO nanowires. At room temperature, the spectrum of the core-shell nanowires shows a strong reduction of the relative intensity of the green defect emission with respect to the near-band-edge emission. At 5?K an increase of the relative intensity of the surface exciton band with respect to the donor-bound exciton emission is observed. Annealing the core-shell nanowires at 500?°C does not increase the green defect luminescence at 5?K. We propose a model explaining the spectral changes.

Effect of low dose UVB irradiation on the migratory properties and functional capacities of human skin dendritic cells

We recently described the 'spontaneous' migration of skin dendritic cells out of human split skin during culture. Since newly infiltrating cells from the circulation are excluded, this in vitro model is very suitable for studying the effect of UVB irradiation on the migratory properties, phenotype and functional capacities of skin cells. In the present study, we show that UVB irradiation of the skin before the culture period results in a significantly lower number of migrated cells that could be obtained compared with untreated skin. Relatively more dendritic cells of the population that migrated from UVB-irradiated skin were of dermal origin, as indicated by a higher percentage of CD1b+ cells. These data imply that UVB irradiation inhibits migration, especially of the epidermal Langerhans cells. Ultrastructural analysis of the irradiated skin revealed that the UVB dose used did not cause any directly visible damage to the cells. However, the cell population that had migrated from UVB-irradiated skin showed a significantly lower capacity to stimulate allogeneic T cells. This was not due to a lower expression of MHC class II on these cells. The percentage of cells expressing B7.1, B7.2 and LFA-3 was decreased in the population migrated from irradiated skin. The possible mechanism underlying the UVB-induced suppression is discussed.

A framework for defining the quality of communications services

A framework is described that was developed to help assess communications service quality in a manner that most closely reflects the broad array of performance parameters experienced by customers. Examples of its application are presented. An additional benefit experienced with the use of this framework is a more consistent, disciplined analysis of service parameters, adding to the thoroughness with which service providers and customers alike assess the quality of communications services     

Atomistic simulations of the optical absorption of type-II CdSe/ZnTe superlattices

We perform accurate tight binding simulations to design type-II short-period CdSe/ZnTe superlattices suited for photovoltaic applications. Absorption calculations demonstrate a very good agreement with optical results with threshold strongly depending on the chemical species near interfaces.

Alternative measures of expressed emotion: A methodological and cautionary note.

Undergraduate raters listened to Camberwell Family Interviews that had been conducted with the spouses of depressed patients and then rated each relative with a rating-scale assessment of expressed emotion (EE). Students' ratings of relatives' criticism, hostility, emotional overinvolvement, and warmth were significantly correlated with trained raters' EE assessments obtained in the conventional manner. Despite this correspondence, further analyses revealed that undergraduates' assessments of relatives did not predict 9-mo relapse rates in patients. These results highlight the importance of establishing both the concurrent and predictive validity of any alternative measure of EE. They also emphasize the dangers of assuming that significant correlates of EE are necessarily significant predictors of relapse. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)
