This paper reports results from an experimental pilot study performed to quantify the manual dexterity of older Mexican American adults. The Purdue pegboard test, a two-arm coordination test, and a hand-tool dexterity test were used in this study. To enable cross-sectional comparisons of manual dexterity measures of older Mexican American adults with young Mexican American adults, these tests were administered to 18 older Mexican American adults aged 63–85 (mean age: 71.3 years, SD: 7.0 years), recruited from senior recreation centers in El Paso, and eighteen young adults aged 21–32 (mean age: 25.6 years, SD: 3.8 years) recruited from the student body at the University of Texas at El Paso. For the Purdue pegboard test, the number of pegs placed in 30 s using the preferred hand, the non-preferred hand, and both hands were first individually monitored. Then, scores on an assembly task using the Purdue pegboard were obtained. For the two-arm coordination test, participants were required to trace a star pattern with a stylus using both hands. The time for task completion and the number of errors made during task performance were monitored. For the hand-tool dexterity test, participants were required to use common hand tools and remove nuts and bolts from one side of a wooden upright, and to assemble nuts and bolts in the corresponding holes on the other side of the upright. The time taken for task completion was recorded. Since modified Levene's test showed equality of variances, two sample t-tests, comparing the mean responses of older adults with the mean responses of young adults for each individual test, were conducted. Results indicate that responses for the older adults were statistically significant different (p<0.001) from young adults for all Purdue pegboard tasks. On the average, older adults performed significantly slower (p<0.001) than young adults on the two-arm coordination test, and committed more errors before task completion (p<0.05). Older adults also took longer to complete the hand-tool dexterity task compared to their younger counterparts (p<0.05). In addition to the t-tests, manual dexterity performance measures from older adults were regressed with age to determine the cross-sectional age effects on manual dexterity measures. Results indicate that all Purdue pegboard performance measures were significantly affected by age (p<0.05). The time to complete the two-arm coordination test was significantly linearly related to age (p<0.05). However, the number of errors committed by older adults in the performance of the two-arm coordination test was not significantly linearly related to age. Time to complete the hand-tool dexterity was also significantly linearly related to age (p<0.05). Accommodating age-related changes in manual dexterity is important for job design in industry, especially in industries employing older adults requiring significant assembly and hand-tool use.

Given the aging of the industrial workforce, it is important to understand how manual dexterity is affected by age, so that jobs requiring significant manual dexterity for task initiation, task performance and task completion are designed to fit older adult dexterity levels. 相似文献

L. Ljung's (1977) method for analyzing recursive stochastic algorithms is used to formulate a projection operator ordinary differential equation (ODE). The ODE describes the expected convergence dynamics of a noniterative spherical subspace tracker. The subspace ODE is a Riccati equation defined over the manifold of rank r projection matrices in C nxn. A Lyapunov function is defined that is shown to have global maximum and minimum at the signal and noise subspaces, respectively. By taking a derivative of the Lyapunov function along any trajectory, it is shown that the dynamics force all trajectories to converge to the signal subspace. In the retinas of teleost fish dopamine, released from interplexiform cells, modulates synaptic transmission at both the chemical and electrical synapses of retinal horizontal cells. This modulation is due to activation of adenylate cyclase and phosphorylation by protein kinase A, perhaps of the synaptic ion channel proteins themselves. In this study we have fractionated the white perch retina by Percoll density gradient centrifugation in order to identify proteins which coenrich with horizontal cells. In addition we have tested retinal fractions for phosphorylation by native cAMP-dependent kinase. Our findings indicate that there are at least 3 proteins of molecular weights 28, 43/44 and 50 kDa which coenrich with horizontal cells and 3 proteins of 30/31 kDa, 35 kDa (putative rhodopsin) and 48 kDa (putative arrestin) which coenrich with photoreceptor fractions. The 43/44 kDa phosphoprotein is a target for cAMP-dependent protein phosphorylation and thus is apparently an element of the dopaminergic modulatory pathway in perch horizontal cells. 相似文献

Breast cancer MCF-7 cell-line-derived mammospheres were shown to be enriched in cells with a CD44+/CD24– surface profile, consistent with breast cancer stem cells (BCSC). These BCSC were previously reported to express key sphingolipid signaling effectors, including pro-oncogenic sphingosine kinase 1 (SphK1) and sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor 3 (S1P3). In this study, we explored intracellular trafficking and localization of SphK1 and S1P3 in parental MCF-7 cells, and MCF-7 derived BCSC-enriched mammospheres treated with growth- or apoptosis-stimulating agents. Intracellular trafficking and localization were assessed using confocal microscopy and cell fractionation, while CD44+/CD24- marker status was confirmed by flow cytometry. Mammospheres expressed significantly higher levels of S1P3 compared to parental MCF-7 cells (p < 0.01). Growth-promoting agents (S1P and estrogen) induced SphK1 and S1P3 translocation from cytoplasm to nuclei, which may facilitate the involvement of SphK1 and S1P3 in gene regulation. In contrast, pro-apoptotic cytokine tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα)-treated MCF-7 cells demonstrated increased apoptosis and no nuclear localization of SphK1 and S1P3, suggesting that TNFα can inhibit nuclear translocation of SphK1 and S1P3. TNFα inhibited mammosphere formation and induced S1P3 internalization and degradation. No nuclear translocation of S1P3 was detected in TNFα-stimulated mammospheres. Notably, SphK1 and S1P3 expression and localization were highly heterogenous in mammospheres, suggesting the potential for a large variety of responses. The findings provide further insights into the understanding of sphingolipid signaling and intracellular trafficking in BCs. Sea lampreys,Mordacia mordax, were collected in spring from the Yarra River, Victoria, during their upstream spawning migration, to study the lipid composition
in their tissues and plasma and their lipid transport system. Plasma lipoproteins were isolated by preparative ultracentrifugation
and their chemical compositions were analyzed. The major classes of lipoproteins were found to be similar to those of man
and higher animals. Lipids from the muscle and liver were analyzed for fatty acids. The striking feature of the lipids in
the migrating lamprey is the presence of very high levels of cholesterol in both plasma and muscle. The possible metabolic

This work studied the effects of adding short basalt fibers (BFs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), both separately and in combination, on the mechanical properties, fracture toughness, and electrical conductivity of an epoxy polymer. The surfaces of the short BFs were either treated using a silane coupling agent or further functionalized by atmospheric plasma to enhance the adhesion between the BFs and the epoxy. The results of a single fiber fragmentation test demonstrated a significantly improved BF/epoxy adhesion upon applying the plasma treatment to the BFs. This resulted in better mechanical properties and fracture toughness of the composites containing the plasma-activated BFs. The improved BF/epoxy adhesion also affected the hybrid toughening performance of the BFs and MWCNTs. In particular, synergistic toughening effects were observed when the plasma-activated BFs/MWCNTs hybrid modifiers were used, while only additive toughening effects occurred for the silane-sized BFs/MWCNTs hybrid modifiers. We provide a general framework for constructing digital dynamical decoupling sequences based on Walsh modulation—applicable to arbitrary qubit decoherence scenarios. By establishing equivalence between decoupling design based on Walsh functions and on concatenated projections, we identify a family of optimal Walsh sequences, which can be exponentially more efficient, in terms of the required total pulse number, for fixed cancellation order, than known digital sequences based on concatenated design. Optimal sequences for a given cancellation order are highly non-unique—their performance depending sensitively on the control path. We provide an analytic upper bound to the achievable decoupling error and show how sequences within the optimal Walsh family can substantially outperform concatenated decoupling in principle, while respecting realistic timing constraints. 相似文献

Development of the water resources of the Mekong Basin is the subject of intense debate both within the Mekong region and
internationally. Water resources modelling is playing an increasingly important role in the debate, with significant effort
in building integrated modelling platforms to describe the hydrological, ecological, social and economic impacts of water
resource development. In the hydrological domain, a comprehensive set of models has been effective in building understanding
of the system, and in identifying and describing the issues and trade-offs involved in basin-scale water planning. In the
ecological and social domains, quantitative modelling has not progressed very far; geo-spatial analysis and qualitative frameworks
remain the most commonly used tools. Economic models have been used to assess the costs and benefits of water resources development
and to describe the trade-offs between different sectors and users. These analyses are likely to play an important role in
the policy and planning debate, but are hampered by uncertainties in valuation of ecosystem services. Future efforts should
focus on optimising the use of existing model platforms for the Mekong, including structured comparison of multiple hydrological
models to quantify errors and identify an optimum set of modelling tools for different applications. A comprehensive research
effort is needed to incorporate groundwater into hydrological models for regional planning. Options for social impact assessment
should be reassessed before major investments are made in complex modelling platforms, and participatory social survey methods
evaluated as part of an integrated assessment framework. 相似文献

This paper reports a detailed evaluation of the effectiveness of a system that has been developed for the identification and
retrieval of morphological variants in searches of Latin text databases. A user of the retrieval system enters the principal
parts of the search term (two parts for a noun or adjective, three parts for a deponent verb, and four parts for other verbs),
this enabling the identification of the type of word that is to be processed and of the rules that are to be followed in determining
the morphological variants that should be retrieved. Two different search algorithms are described. The algorithms are applied
to the Latin portion of the Hartlib Papers Collection and to a range of classical, vulgar and medieval Latin texts drawn from
the Patrologia Latina and from the PHI Disk 5.3 datasets. The effectiveness of these searches demonstrates the effectiveness
of our procedures in providing access to the full range of classical and post-classical Latin text databases.

The Nightingallery project encouraged participants to converse, sing, and perform with a musically responsive animatronic bird, playfully interacting with the character while members of the public could look on and observe. We used Nightingallery to frame an HCI investigation into how people would engage with one another when confronted with unfamiliar technologies in conspicuously public, social spaces. Structuring performances as improvisational street theatre, we styled our method of exhibiting the bird character. We cast ourselves in supporting roles as carnival barkers and minders of the bird, presenting him as if he were a fantastical creature in a fairground sideshow display, allowing him the agency to shape and maintain dialogues with participants, and positioning him as the focal character upon which the encounter was centred. We explored how the anthropomorphic nature of the bird itself, along with the cultural connotations associated with the carnival/sideshow tradition helped signpost and entice participants through the trajectory of their encounters with the exhibit. Situating ourselves as secondary characters within the narrative defining the performance/use context, our methods of mediation, observation, and evaluation were integrated into the performance frame. In this paper, we explore recent HCI theories in mixed reality performance to reflect upon how genre-based cultural connotations can be used to frame trajectories of experience, and how manipulation of roles and agency in participatory performance can facilitate HCI investigation of social encounters with playful technologies. 相似文献
