In this paper we propose a compact split step Padé scheme (CSSPS) to solve the scalar higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation (HNLS) with higher-order linear and nonlinear effects such as the third and fourth order dispersion effects, Kerr dispersion, stimulated Raman scattering and power law nonlinearity. The stability of this method has been proved. It has been shown as well that the CSSPS method gives the same results as classical numerical methods like the split step Fourier method and Crank–Nicholson (CN) method but it presents many advantages over theme. It is more efficient. This proposed scheme is well suited to higher-order dispersion effects and readily generalized for nonlinear and dispersion managed fibers. In this paper we consider vertical handoff for enterprise-based dual-mode (DM) cellular/WLAN handsets. When the handset roams
out of WLAN coverage, the DM's cellular interface is used to maintain the call by anchoring it through an enterprise PSTN
gateway/PBX. Soft handoff can be achieved in this case if the gateway supports basic conference bridging, since a new leg
of the call can be established to the conference bridge while the existing media stream path is active. Unfortunately this
requires that all intra-enterprise calls be routed through the gateway when the call is established. In this paper we consider
a SIP based architecture to perform conferenced dual-mode handoff and propose a much more scalable mechanism for short-delay
environments, whereby active calls are handed off into the conference bridge prior to the initiation of the vertical handoff.
Results are presented which are taken from a dual-mode handset testbed, from analytic models, and from simulations which characterize
the scalability of the proposed mechanism.

Professor Todd spent 1991 on research leave in the Distributed Systems Research Department at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Murray
Hill, NJ. He also spent 1998 on research leave at The Olivetti and Oracle Research Laboratory in Cambridge, England. While
at ORL he worked on the piconet project which was an early embedded wireless network testbed.
Dr. Todd’s research interests include metropolitan/local area networks, wireless communications and the performance analysis
of computer communication networks and systems. He is a past Editor of the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking and currently
holds the NSERC/RIM/CITO Chair on Pico-Cellular Wireless Internet Access Networks.
Dr. Todd is a Professional Engineer in the province of Ontario and a member of the IEEE.
Vytas Kezys was born in Hamilton, Canada in 1957. He received the B.Eng. degree in Electrical Engineering from McMaster University, Canada,
in 1979.
From 1979 to 1998, Mr. Kezys was involved in radar and communications research as Principal Research Engineer at the Communications
Research Laboratory, McMaster University. While at McMaster, his research activities included array signal processing for
low-angle tracking radar, radar signal processing, and smart antennas for wireless communications. Mr. Kezys was founder and
President of TalariCom Inc., a start-up company that developed cost effective smart antenna technologies for broadband wireless
access applications.
Currently, Mr. Kezys is Director of Advanced Products at Research in Motion in Waterloo, Canada.
Vahid S. Azhari received his B.S. and M.S. from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, IUST and University of Tehran, Iran,
in 2000 and 2003 respectively. His M.S. research focused on designing scheduling algorithms for switch fabrics. He also worked
for two years for the Iranian Telecommunication Research Centre on developing software for SDH switches. He is currently pursuing
his Ph.D. degree at the Wireless Networking Laboratory, McMaster University, Canada. His main area of research includes handoff
management in integrated wireless networks, WLAN deployment techniques, and wireless mesh networks.
Dongmei Zhao received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
in June 2002. Since July 2002 she has been with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, McMaster University,

With the increasing growth of the chemical and process industries, it is necessary to ensure the safe operation of their complex and often hazardous installations, given their proximity to residential areas. Several techniques, such as fault tree analysis (FTA), bow-tie analysis (BTA), and Bayesian belief networks (BBNs), have been developed for adequate probabilistic risk assessment and management. The current work is aimed at performing a brief statistical review of the use of Bayesian networks in the chemical and process industry within the last decade. The review reveals that Bayesian networks have been used extensively in various forms of safety and risk assessment. This trend is attributable to the complexity of the installations found in this industry and the ability of BBN to intuitively represent these complexities, handle uncertainties, and update event probabilities. The paper is concluded with an illustrative example of the use of BBN to investigate the effectiveness of the safety barriers of a gas facility.
An experimental study was undertaken to investigate the role of polypropylene or brass-coated steel fibers in controlling unrestrained expansions and delaying and arresting cracking in Portland cement concrete due to alkali-silica reaction. Portland cement concrete and fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) mixtures were prepared at a w/c ratio of 0.40 using modified Type I cement, reactive fine particles, and coarse limestone aggregates. Prism (5×5×30 cm) and plate (13.5×13.5×3 cm) specimens were prepared and cured for 7 or 28 days before exposure to a special treatment to accelerate ASR. Expansion, time of cracking, and ultrasonic pulse velocity were determined over a treatment period of 65 days using prism specimens. Ultimate cracking pattern and extent were determined after a treatment period of 85 days using plate specimens. The results showed that while fibers did not contribute significantly to controlling pre-cracking and post-cracking expansions, they played a significant role in delaying cracks formation and limiting their extent. Considering its lower cost and content, the performance of polypropylene fibers was superior to that of brass-coated steel ones. The potential of brass-coated fibers in arresting ASR cracking was significantly affected by age of concrete when subjected to treatment. 相似文献
The objective was to review the literature related to the risk of salmonellosis from chicken consumed in private homes in Canada. The pathway of concern was retail-to-consumption at private homes due to the direct link between this pathway and public health. A qualitative review was conducted by searching Canadian governmental agencies' webpages, published peer-reviewed journals, and by contacting experts in the field. Overall, with the data available, estimating risk from Salmonella in chicken breasts using only Canadian information was limited. Enumeration data for Salmonella in retail raw chicken at different regions across Canada are needed to be able to generalize the risk of salmonellosis in the Canadian population. Few Canadian surveys were found to describe consumers' food safety behaviors at Canadians' private homes. Observational designs to study food safety practices and Canadian consumers' behavior in private kitchens are needed to ensure that consumer behavior is consistent with consumer perceptions of their behavior. The results of such studies will give valuable input for designing educational programs needed to increase awareness of safe food handling practices by Canadian consumers when preparing food at their homes. 相似文献
Intrusion detection is a serious and complex problem. Undoubtedly due to a large number of attacks around the world, the concept of intrusion detection has become very important. This research proposes a multilayer bio-inspired feature selection model for intrusion detection using an optimized genetic algorithm. Furthermore, the proposed multilayer model consists of two layers (layers 1 and 2). At layer 1, three algorithms are used for the feature selection. The algorithms used are Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO), and Firefly Optimization Algorithm (FFA). At the end of layer 1, a priority value will be assigned for each feature set. At layer 2 of the proposed model, the Optimized Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used to select one feature set based on the priority value. Modifications are done on standard GA to perform optimization and to fit the proposed model. The Optimized GA is used in the training phase to assign a priority value for each feature set. Also, the priority values are categorized into three categories: high, medium, and low. Besides, the Optimized GA is used in the testing phase to select a feature set based on its priority. The feature set with a high priority will be given a high priority to be selected. At the end of phase 2, an update for feature set priority may occur based on the selected features priority and the calculated F-Measures. The proposed model can learn and modify feature sets priority, which will be reflected in selecting features. For evaluation purposes, two well-known datasets are used in these experiments. The first dataset is UNSW-NB15, the other dataset is the NSL-KDD. Several evaluation criteria are used, such as precision, recall, and F-Measure. The experiments in this research suggest that the proposed model has a powerful and promising mechanism for the intrusion detection system. 相似文献
A new method is developed to analyze the performance of partially coherent PSK systems in wireless channels with equal-gain combining diversity receiver. Two performance criteria are considered: the average bit error probability and the probability distribution of the combiner SNR (SNR reliability). Tikhonov-distributed phase error processes are assumed and generalized fading channels including Rayleigh, Rician, and Nakagami-m are investigated. We evaluate the detection loss suffered by the carrier recovery for different SNR reliability levels when BPSK and QPSK systems are used in wireless channels. The analysis is based on a convergent infinite series for the distribution of the sum of random variables. The convergence rate of the proposed series is investigated and the analytical results are presented along with providing results obtained by simulation. 相似文献
We have previously described spontaneous but reversible hair loss that clinically and histologically resembles human alopecia areata in a colony of C3H/HeJ mice. Alopecia areata in humans is associated with antibodies to hair follicles. This study was conducted to determine whether C3H/HeJ mice with hair loss have a similar abnormal antibody response to hair follicles. Eighteen C3H/HeJ mice with alopecia, 12 unaffected littermates, and 15 control mice were examined for circulating antibodies to C3H/HeJ anagen hair follicles by indirect immunofluorescence and against extracts of isolated C3H/HeJ and human anagen hair follicles by immunoblotting. Using both procedures, antibodies to anagen hair follicles were present in all C3H/HeJ mice with alopecia but in none of the control mice. The antibodies were also present in some unaffected C3H/HeJ littermates but were absent in mice of an unrelated strain with inflammatory skin disease and alopecia, indicating that their appearance did not result from the hair loss. These antibodies reacted to hair follicle-specific antigens of 40-60 kDa present in murine and human anagen hair follicles. These antigens were also reactive with human alopecia areata antibodies. Some of the antibodies in both C3H/HeJ mice and humans with alopecia areata reacted to antigens of 44 and 46 kDa, which were identified as hair follicle-specific keratins. This study indicates that C3H/HeJ mice with hair loss have circulating antibodies to hair follicles similar to those present in humans with alopecia areata. These findings confirm that these mice are an appropriate model for human alopecia areata and support the hypothesis that alopecia areata results from an abnormal autoimmune response to hair follicles. 相似文献
