Health Monitoring of Long-Haul Fiber Communication System Using Chaotic OTDR

A novel chaotic optical time-domain reflectometry(OTDR)-based approach was proposed for monitoring long-haul fiber communication systems with multiple fiber segments. The self-phase modulation and group velocity dispersion effects of the optical cable was considered in demonstrating the proof-of-concept experiment and simulation. In experiments, the correlation peaks are clearly obtained from the correlation trace between the reference and reflected(or scattered) light signals propagating in three optical-fiber segments. The technique affords a high spatial resolution of 2 m, and further long-haul fiber simulations indicate that the sensing distance can be more than 3300 km. Thus, the new proposed technique can be effectively applied for health monitoring of long-haul fiber communication systems.     

Enhanced Hardness of Transparent HAp Ceramic by Microstructure Refinement

Transparent hydroxyapatite(HAp) ceramics with the grain size ranging 86-1 300 nm were successfully synthesized by spark plasma sintering(SPS) at 925-1 200 ℃. All the sample achieved final density higher than 99.7%. The phase stability was identified by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR). The experimental results indicate that there is no decomposition or dehydroxylation during the SPS processes. The influences of microstructure refinement on the hardness were investigated using HallPetch(H-P) relationship, and the hardness of transparent HAp ceramic increases with the decrease of grain size. It is demonstrated that the grain boundaries and defects play important roles on the hardness.

High Temperature Oxidation Behavior of La2O3-MosSi3/MoSi2 Composites

The oxidation behavior of 0. 8% La2O3- Mo5Si3/MoSi2 composites at 1200℃ in air was investigated. The results reveal that the oxidation resistance of the material with 0. 8% La2O3 and Mo5Si3 is impaired. The oxidation resistance is decreased with increasing Mo5Si3 content. The mass loss follows a linear law in the initial oxidation. With oxidation time prolonging, a continuous and dense oxidation scale prevents oxygen from diffusing increasing when and leads to mass change a Mo5Si3 content is less than 30%. However, the composite shows ＂PEST＂ with the addition of 40% Mo5Si3. With increasing Mo5Si3 content, the oxidation resistance of 0.8% La2O3- Mo5Si3/MoSi2 decreases. This attributes to the poor oxidation resistance of M05Si3 and the relative density decreasing of 0. 8% La2O3-Mo5Si3/MoSi2 composite.
