This study investigated the effect of moving from small offices to a landscape environment for 19 Visual Display Unit (VDU) operators at Alcatel Denmark AS. The operators reported significantly improved lighting condition and glare situation. Further, visual discomfort was also significantly reduced on a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). There was no significant correlation between lighting condition and visual discomfort neither in the small offices nor in the office landscape. However, visual discomfort correlated significantly with glare in small offices i.e. more glare is related to more visual discomfort. This correlation disappeared after the lighting system in the office landscape had been improved. There was also a significant correlation between glare and itching of the eyes as well as blurred vision in the small offices, i.e. more glare more visual symptoms. Experience of pain was found to reduce the subjective assessment of work capacity during VDU tasks. There was a significant correlation between visual discomfort and reduced work capacity in small offices and in the office landscape. When moving from the small offices to the office landscape, there was a significant reduction in headache as well as back pain. No significant changes in pain intensity in the neck, shoulder, forearm, and wrist/hand were observed.The pain levels in different body areas were significantly correlated with subjective assessment of reduced work capacity in small offices and in the office landscape.By careful design and construction of an office landscape with regard to lighting and visual conditions, transfer from small offices may be acceptable from a visual-ergonomic point of view.  相似文献

The growing prevalence of obesity affects millions of people around the world and has gained increased attention over the years because it is associated with the development of other chronic degenerative diseases. Different organizations recommend lifestyle changes to treat obesity; nevertheless, other strategies in addition to lifestyle changes have recently been suggested. One of these strategies is the use of probiotics in fermented dairy products; however, a need exists to review the different studies available related to the potential antiobesity effect of these products. Because probiotic fermented dairy products that support weight management are not available in the market, there is a great opportunity for the development of functional dairy products with new lactic acid bacteria that may present this added health benefit. Thus, the purpose of this overview is to highlight the importance of probiotic fermented dairy products as potential antiobesogenic functional foods and present in vitro and in vivo studies required before this kind of product may be introduced to the market. Overall, most studies attributed the antiobesity effect of fermented dairy foods to the probiotic strains present; however, bioactive peptides released during milk fermentation may also be responsible for this effect.  相似文献

Objective

To evaluate the effect of a total ban on smoking indoors in restaurants and other hospitality business premises in Norway, on respiratory symptoms among workers in the industry.

Methods

Phone interviews with 1525 employees in the hospitality business were conducted immediately before the enacting of the law. In a follow‐up study five months later, 906 of the workers from the baseline sample participated. Questions were asked on demographic variables, passive smoking exposure, personal smoking, attitudes towards the law, and five respiratory symptoms. Change in symptom prevalence was analysed with McNemar''s test and with analysis of variance (ANOVA) for repeated measures.

Results

The prevalence of all five symptoms declined after the ban; for morning cough from 20.6% to 16.2% (p < 0.01); for daytime cough from 23.2% to 20.9%; for phlegm cough from 15.3% to 11.8% (p < 0.05); for dyspnoea from 19.2% to 13.0% (p < 0.01); and for wheezing from 9.0% to 7.8%. ANOVA showed that the largest decline in symptom prevalence was seen among workers who themselves gave up smoking, and subjects with a positive attitude towards the law before it took effect.

Conclusion

A significant decrease in respiratory symptoms among service industry workers was found five months after the enacting of a public smoking ban.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to isolate and characterize bacteriocins produced by 2 Lactobacillus fermentum strains isolated from artisanal Mexican Cocido cheese. Fractions (F ≤3 kDa) obtained from cell-free supernatants of Lb. fermentum strains J23 and J32 were further fractionated by reversed-phase HPLC on a C18 column. Antimicrobial activities of F ≤3 kDa and bacteriocin-containing fractions (BCF), obtained from fractionation of F ≤3 kDa against 4 indicator microorganisms, were determined by the disk diffusion method and growth inhibition in milk. Subsequently, isolated BCF were analyzed by reversed-phase HPLC tandem mass spectrometry. Results showed that BCF presented antimicrobial activity against the 4 indicator microorganisms tested. For J23, one of the fractions (F3) presented the highest activity against Escherichia coli and was also inhibitory against Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria innocua, Salmonella Typhimurium, and Salmonella Choleraesuis. Similarly, fractions F3 and F4 produced by J32 presented antimicrobial activity against all indicator microorganisms. Furthermore, generation time and growth rate showed that F3 from J23 presented significantly higher antimicrobial activity against the 4 indicator microorganisms (2 gram-positive and 2 gram-negative) when inoculated in milk compared with F3 from J32. Interestingly, this fraction presented a broader antimicrobial spectrum in milk than nisin (control). Reversed-phase HPLC tandem mass spectrometry analysis revealed the presence of several peptides in BCF; however, F3 from J23 that was the most active fraction of all presented only 1 bacteriocin. The chemical characterization of this bacteriocin suggested that it was a novel peptide with 10 hydrophobic AA residues in its sequence and a molecular weight of 2,056 Da. This bacteriocin and its producing strain, J23, may find application as a biopreservative against these indicator microorganisms in dairy products.  相似文献

In this report the effects of phosphoglycerate kinase (PGK) overproduction on the physiology and plasmid stability in baker's yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae containing the PGK1 gene on an episomal plasmid are described. This examination reveals that there is a preferred intracellular level for this enzyme, amounting to 10-15% of the total soluble protein. Strains containing the plasmid and the host strain were grown in non-selective batch cultures and continuous culture, under different growth conditions. Plasmid-containing yeast strains stabilize the copy number of the episomal plasmid at a level at which the PGK concentration is about 12%. This stabilization is due to an equilibrium between normal plasmid loss and selective pressure because of advantages resulting from the increased amount of PGK under glucose-limited conditions. During respiro-fermentative growth, PGK-overproducing cells showed an increased respiration rate and decreased fermentative activity, compared to the host strain. The PGK1 gene can be applied as a direct positive selection marker to obtain a high episomal plasmid stability during growth on glucose. The results are consistent with previously reported data on the physiology and gene stability of PGK-overproducing yeast cells that contain multiple copies of the PGK1 gene integrated into the genome.  相似文献

Ability of Saccharomyces cerevisiae MPY3 cells to flocculate during fermentation in wort was found to be triggered after growth limitation by oxygen shortage and to coincide with a sharp increase in cell surface hydrophobicity of the cells. Presence of oxygen in the pitching wort influenced final cell number, flocculence of the cells and cell surface hydrophobicity. Flocculation ability of cells grown in air-depleted pitching wort was hampered, concomitant with a decrease in final cell number and in final cell surface hydrophobicity. Addition of ergosterol and Tween 80 to air-depleted wort restored normal growth of the cells as well as flocculation ability and the increase in cell surface hydrophobicity. The same parameters increased in value after addition of ergosterol and Tween 80 to a fermentation with air-saturated pitching wort. Hydrophobicity of a non-flocculent mutant of S. cerevisiae strain MPY3, fermenting in air-saturated pitching wort, did not increase at cell division arrest. These results support the hypothesis that cell surface hydrophobicity is a major determinant for yeast cells to become flocculent, and suggest that shortage of sterols and unsaturated fatty acids precedes flocculence under brewing conditions.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of propolis extract (PE) to reduce lipid oxidation and microbial growth on beef patties during refrigerated storage. Beef patties were manufactured by incorporating PE in 4 different treatments: (1) Control (no PE addition); (2) commercial propolis 1 (2% w/w; CP1); (3) commercial propolis 2 (2% w/w; CP2); and (4) noncommercial propolis (2% w/w; NCP). Raw patties were wrapped with polyvinyl chloride and stored at 2 °C for 8 d. Total phenolic content (TPC), free‐radical scavenging activity (FRS), and polyphenolic content of the PE were evaluated using high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Lipid oxidation (thiobarbituric acid‐reactive substances (TBARS), conjugated dienes (CnDs), metmyoglobin (MetMb%), pH variation, and color (L*, a*, b*, C*, and h*), and microbial growth (mesophilic and psychrotrophic bacteria) of patty samples were measured. NCP treatment demonstrated the highest FRS (64.8% at 100 μg/mL), which correlated with TPC and the presence of polyphenolic compounds. Lipid oxidation (78.54%, TBARS; 45.53%, CnD; 58.57%, MetMb) and microbial mesophilic and psychrotrophic growth (19.75 and 27.03%, respectively) values were reduced by NCP treatment in refrigerated samples after 8 d. These results indicate that PE has great potential as a natural antioxidant and antimicrobial additive to extend the shelf life of beef patties.  相似文献

Nitrogen‐doped carbon inverse opal (CIO‐N) is synthesized by a two‐step process involving the infiltration of carbon‐nitrogen precursors within opals followed by the thermolysis and removal of the opal structure in hydrofluoric acid (HF). Undoped samples exhibit a reflection peak in the red region of the spectrum whereas N‐doped samples display shifts to the blue region of the spectrum as the nitrogen content is increased. The degree of crystallinity of CIO‐N strongly depends upon the nitrogen content and on the size of the precursor silica particles used to prepare the inverted opals. In addition, the introduction of nitrogen into the samples is able to increase the electrical conductivity by one order of magnitude from 2 to 30 S cm‐1 (at room temperature). All samples are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet‐visible (UV‐Vis) spectroscopy, and electrical conductivity measurements. It is envisaged that CIO‐N could have important applications in the fabrication of photonic crystals, photoconducting materials, molecular sensors, field emission devices, capacitors, batteries, among many others.  相似文献
