Canola meal is highly regarded as a component of animal feed with a high protein content and a desirable amino acid profile. The presence of some components, in particular glucosinolates, sinapine and fibre, affects the value of the meal and reduces the amount that can be used in animal feed formulations. Glucosinolates in traditional cultivars (rapeseed) had very high amounts and this severely limited the usefulness of the meal. Canola breeding programs have successfully reduced glucosinolate content to trace amounts. However sinapine remains at levels sufficiently high to cause problems, particularly in poultry feed. The relatively high fibre level in canola also reduces the value of the product for animal feed. This study has determined the level of sinapine, glucosinolates and fibre in current cultivars of canola in Australia to illustrate advances made by breeding programs and limitations which still remain to raise the usefulness of a potentially valuable feedstock. Although glucosinolate levels in meal were shown to have been reduced to 11 μmol/g in some cases, sinapine remained at traditional levels of about 12–15 g/kg and neutral detergent fibre levels were about 30–40%. The quality indices and chemical composition of ten common olive cultivars grown in different regions of Australia were evaluated to determine the diversity of olive oils produced in Australia. Olives from trees from different environments including warmer climates in the north to colder climates in the south were sampled at two different stages of maturity over 2 years. The oil was extracted and standard methods were used to analyse the oil. Oleic acid content ranged from 83.4% in the Picual cultivar grown in Tasmania to 54.5% in Arbequina grown in northern New South Wales/southern Queensland. The Barnea cultivar, which is very commonly grown in Australia, was above 4% for campesterol content, regardless of the region in which it was grown. Parameters, such as palmitic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid and wax content were found to be significantly affected by growing region for some cultivars. This study shows the growing conditions for olive in Australia gives rise to a diverse range of olive oils.  相似文献

Any individual's response intended to be random should be as probable as any other. However, 3 experiments show that many people's independent responses depart from the expected chance distribution. Participants responding to instructions of chance and related concepts favor the available options unequally in a similar way. Consequently, in hide-and-seek games, hiders converge on certain locations and are thereby detected beyond chance by seekers who share their preferences. People agree on salient and on nonsalient options, both of which are preferred under different instructions and even in the absence of instructions. Group responses strongly correlate under diverse, even opposing (e.g., competitive and cooperative) directions. Apparently, common default tendencies, combining random and aesthetic choices, are only somewhat modified under specific instructions. Maximal agreement with others is obtained through one's own aesthetic choices. Hence, implementing one's personal aesthetic preferences succeeds in matching others' choices even better than deliberate mutual coordination efforts. These results broadly replicate in 1- and 2-dimensional tasks. Implications of the findings, their possible roots, and their connection to constructs from, e.g., game theory and subjective-complexity research, are discussed. A proposed remedy for biased affective forecasts is to base judgments on the actual feelings of people (surrogates) currently experiencing the event, rather than using imagination which conjures an inaccurate vision of the future. Gilbert et al. (2009) forced people to use surrogate reports by withholding all event information, resulting in better predictions. However, in life surrogate information rarely supplants event information—can people effectively integrate both types of information into their judgments? In five studies, respondents predicted the impact of a health state on their own happiness. Respondents incorporated surrogate information into their judgments both in the presence and absence of event information. However, they inappropriately discounted other people’s experiences as a valid predictor of their own—particularly in the presence of event information—and imagined their happiness would be different to surrogates’ happiness. Excluding preexisting event knowledge, changing the size of the surrogate sample, or increasing the size of the response scale did not alter the adjustment. The sunk cost effect is a maladaptive economic behavior that is manifested in a greater tendency to continue an endeavor once an investment in money, effort, or time has been made. The Concorde fallacy is another name for the sunk cost effect, except that the former term has been applied strictly to lower animals, whereas the latter has been applied solely to humans. The authors contend that there are no unambiguous instances of the Concorde fallacy in lower animals and also present evidence that young children, when placed in an economic situation akin to a sunk cost one, exhibit more normatively correct behavior than do adults. These findings pose an enigma: Why do adult humans commit an error contrary to the normative cost–benefit rules of choice, whereas children and phylogenetically humble organisms do not? This communication entails development of a facile continuous flow lipase immobilized poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene dimethacrylate (poly(GMA-co-EDMA)) monolith microreactor for application in lipid transformations. Candida antarctica lipase B was covalently immobilized on poly(GMA-co-EDMA) monolith prepared in a 700-μm (internal diameter) silica capillary. The specific activity of the immobilized lipase was calculated to be 30 ± 0.03 U/mg, where U refers to μg p-nitrophenol generated/min from 3.5 mM p-nitrophenyl butyrate solution. The microreactor performance was further tested for synthesis of lauryl laurate via esterification. Conversions of up to 97 % were realized at a flow rate of 10 μL/min of a mixture of 0.1 M in both lauric acid and lauryl alcohol. These microreactors could be reused at least 15 times over a 1 month time period, stored at room temperature, with minimal to no reduction in the activity of the enzyme. We have also demonstrated microreactors to be useful for facile transesterification of castor oil triglycerides with online ESI–MS analytics key in lipidomics applications.  相似文献

Calculating risk is relatively straightforward when there is reliable statistical evidence on which to base a judgment. However, novel technologies are often characterised by a lack of such historical data, which creates a problem for risk assessment. In fact, numerical risk assessments can be positively misleading in such situations. We describe a decision support system – StAR – that gives quantitative assessments where appropriate, but which is also able to provide qualitative risk assessments based on arguments for and against the presence of risk. The user is presented with a summary statement of risk, together with the arguments that underlie this assessment. Furthermore, the user is able to search beyond these top-level arguments in order to discover more about the available evidence. Here we suggest that this approach is well-suited to the way in which people naturally make decisions, and we show how the StAR approach has been implemented in the domain of toxicological risk assessment.  相似文献
