Introduction to the special series.

The history of human civilization is marked by efforts to improve the quality of life by delegating laborious tasks to other species or to machines. The newest technological revolution, the use of electronic computers, has produced enormous changes in our lives over the last three decades. Computer technology has been widely applied to many fields of psychology. Psychological assessment, a subspecialty of psychology that served as one of the earliest proving grounds of automated technology, has advanced considerably in the last quarter-century. This Special Series highlights some of the advances in computerized psychological assessment methods and discusses some of the lingering issues and contemporary problems with automated psychological assessment approaches. MeeGo：将开源进行到底

General linear methods for ordinary differential equations

General linear methods were introduced as the natural generalizations of the classical Runge–Kutta and linear multistep methods. They have potential applications, especially for stiff problems. This paper discusses stiffness and emphasises the need for efficient implicit methods for the solution of stiff problems. In this context, a survey of general linear methods is presented, including recent results on methods with the inherent RK stability property.     

The Shopping Jacket: Wearable computing for the consumer

As part of the Bristol Wearable Computing Initiative, we are exploring location-sensing systems suitable for use with wearable computing. In this paper we present our findings, and in particular a wearable application — the ‘Shopping Jacket’ — which relies on a minimal infrastructure to be effective. We use two positioning devices, ‘pingers’ and GPS. The pinger is used to signal the presence of a shop, and to indicate the type of shop and its website. The GPS is used to disambiguate which branch of a high street chain is being passed. The wearable uses this information to determine whether the wearer needs to be alerted that they are passing an interesting shop, or to direct the wearer around a shopping mall. The Shopping Jacket integrates a wearable CardPC, GPS and pinger receivers, a near-field radio link, hand-held display, GSM data telephone and a speech interface into a conventional sports blazer.     

Euclidean controllable realizations of linear hereditary systems

A realization problem for a class of linear hereditary systems is formulated and state space representations are constructed from inputoutput relations. The resulting hereditary models are shown to be Euclidean controllable, and comparisons are made between these hereditary realizations and other recently developed theories.This research was supported in part by the Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory under grant AFOSR-77-3221.

Techniques are described for identifying and distinguishing between the six varieties of asbestos. When the fibres are large and numerous, as is the case for insulation materials, simple optical or X-ray methods suffice. For environmental samples one must normally resort to electron microscopic techniques for a positive identification. When asbestiform minerals are to be distinguished from other fibrous silicates it is often necessary to use both electron diffraction and X-ray spectrometry.
