We present bottom-emitting tunable vertical-cavity semiconductor optical amplifiers (VCSOAs) with an effective wavelength tuning range of >20 nm. These devices utilize a high reflectivity micromechanically tunable Bragg mirror as the back reflector. Compared with our first generation tunable VCSOAs, the bottom-emitting devices exhibit a two-fold increase in the effective tuning range as well as a five-fold reduction in the required tuning voltage. 相似文献

The presence of a second metal on platinum surfaces affects the performance of methanol oxidation. However, most of the electrocatalytic reactions are studied by using electrochemically deposited platinum alloys, but in the case of spontaneous deposition the situation is not so clear since the surface distribution, stability and morphology are usually not well documented. The formation of surface decorated samples on mono- and poly-crystalline platinum is followed by electrochemical and spectroscopic techniques and analysis of their performance towards methanol adsorption and oxidation compared with that on pure platinum. Pt/Sn and Pt/Ru are of special interest because of their well-known performance in methanol fuel cells. Methanol oxidation on Pt(111)/Ru, Pt(111)/Sn and Pt(111) shows that ruthenium is the only one able to promote the reaction since the simultaneous dissolution of tin occurs and competes with the process of interest. The in situ infrared spectroscopy is used to compare methanol oxidation on Pt(111)/Ru and Pt(111) in acid media using p-polarized light. The formation of bridge bound carbon monoxide is inhibited in the presence of ruthenium ad-species, whereas on Pt(111) the three adsorption configurations are observed. Linear sweep polarization curves and Tafel slopes (calculated from steady state potentiostatic plots) for methanol oxidation are compared on polycrystalline surfaces modified by tin or ruthenium at different coverages. There is almost no change in the Tafel slopes due to the presence of the foreign metal except for Pt/Ru, where a 0.09 V decade−1 slope was calculated below 0.55 V due to hydroxyl adsorbates on ruthenium islands. The anodic stripping of methanol residues on the three surfaces indicates a lower amount of carbon monoxide-type adsorbates on Pt/Ru, and the simultaneous tin dissolution process leading to residues oxidation on Pt/Sn electrodes. 相似文献

This paper assesses the impacts of a GTL plant on the expansion of Brazil's oil refining segment. The GTL plant (50,000 bpd) was sized to start up operations in 2015, producing diesel and naphtha through the indirect route (FT-synthesis). This plant will consume the non-associated natural gas production from the recent discoveries at the Santos Basin (around 419 Bm3), and the associated gas production from the Campos Basin. Both basins are located in the Southeast of Brazil, the most populated, rich and industrialized region of the country. Two different criteria for refinery expansion were simulated in order to meet oil product demand scenarios. Findings show that depending on the refinery expansion criteria considered GTL will play a fundamental hole to meet the oil product demand forecast to Brazil in the next 10 years. 相似文献

The Metaflow architecture, a unified approach to maximizing the performance of superscalar microprocessors, is introduced. The Metaflow architecture exploits inherent instruction-level parallelism in conventional sequential programs by hardware means, without relying on optimizing compilers. It is based on a unified structure, the DRIS (deferred-scheduling, register-renaming instruction shelf), that manages out-of-order execution and most of the attendant problems. Coupling the DRIS with a speculative-execution mechanism that avoids conditional branch stalls results in performance limited only be inherent instruction-level parallelism and available execution resources. Although presented in the context of superscalar machines, the technique is equally applicable to a superpipelined implementation. The iron status of 22 children and adolescents with Crohn's disease (mean age: 13 years) was evaluated. Eleven patients were suffering from active disease with inflammation, identified by at least one abnormal value for serum orosomucoid, C-reactive protein or sedimentation rate (group I). Eleven patients were in clinical remission and showed no biological evidence of inflammation (group II). Hemoglobin and red cell indices, erythrocyte protoporphyrin, serum iron, transferrin, serum ferritin and basic red cell ferritin were determined in all patients. The usual indicators of iron status, particularly serum ferritin, were affected by the inflammatory processes, but basic red cell ferritin appeared to be independent of inflammation. Basic red cell ferritin can therefore be considered to be a reliable indicator of iron status in children and adolescents with Crohn's disease. 相似文献

1. At a holding potential of -40 mV, carbachol (50 microM) produced a complex pattern of inward currents in single smooth muscle cells freshly isolated from the mouse anococcygeus. Membrane currents were monitored by the whole-cell configuration of the patch-clamp technique. Previous work has identified the first, transient component as a calcium-activated chloride current (ICl(Ca)) and the second sustained component as a store depletion-operated non-selective cation current (I(DOC)). The object of the present study was to examine the cellular mechanisms underlying the third component, a series of inward current oscillations (I(oscil)) superimposed on I(DOC). 2. Carbachol-induced I(oscil) (amplitude 97 +/- 11 pA; frequency 0.26 +/- 0.02 Hz) was inhibited by the chloride channel blocker anthracene-9-carboxylic acid (A-9-C; 1 mM), and by inclusion of 1 mM EGTA in the patch-pipette filling solution. 3. In calcium-free extracellular medium (plus 1 mM EGTA), carbachol produced an initial burst of oscillatory current which lasted 94 s before decaying to zero; I(oscil) could be restored by re-admission of calcium. The frequency, but not the amplitude, of I(oscil) increased with increasing concentrations of extracellular calcium (0.5-10 mM). 4. Inclusion of the inositol triphosphate (IP3) receptor antagonist heparin (5 mg ml(-1) in the patch-pipette filling solution, or pretreatment of cells with the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) calcium ATPase inhibitor cyclopiazonic acid (CPA; 10 microM), prevented the activation of I(oscil) by carbachol. Caffeine (10 mM) activated both ICl(Ca) and I(DOC) and prevented the induction of I(oscil) by carbachol. Caffeine and CPA also abolished I(oscil) in the presence of carbachol, as did both a low (3 microM) and a high (30 microM) concentration of ryanodine. 5. Carbachol-induced I(oscil) was abolished by the general calcium entry blocker SKF 96365 (10 MM) and by Cd2+ (100 microM), but was unaffected by La3+ (400 microM). As found previously, I(DOC) was also blocked by SKF 96365 and Cd2+, but not La3+; the inhibition of I(DOC) preceded the abolition of I(oscil) by 27 s with SKF 96365 and by 30 s with Cd2+. Nifedipine (1 microM) produced a partial inhibition of the carbachol-induced I(oscil) frequency at holding potentials of -20 mV and -60 mV and, in addition, reduced I(DOC) at -60 mV by 18%. 6. It is concluded that carbachol-induced inward current oscillations in mouse anococcygeus cells are due to a calcium-activated chloride current, and reflect oscillatory changes in cytoplasmic calcium ion concentration. These calcium oscillations are derived primarily from the SR stores, but entry of calcium into the cell is necessary for store replenishment and maintenance of the oscillations. The design of joint source/channel coders in situations where there is residual redundancy at the output of the source coder is examined. It has previously been shown that this residual redundancy can be used to provide error protection without a channel coder. In this paper, this approach is extended to conventional source coder/convolutional coder combinations. A family of nonbinary encoders is developed which more efficiently use the residual redundancy in the source coder output. It is shown through simulation results that the proposed systems outperform conventional source-channel coder pairs with gains of greater than 9 dB in the reconstruction SNR at high probability of error 相似文献

Ambiguity resolution is a central problem in language comprehension. Lexical and syntactic ambiguities are standardly assumed to involve different types of knowledge representations and be resolved by different mechanisms. An alternative account is provided in which both types of ambiguity derive from aspects of lexical representation and are resolved by the same processing mechanisms. Reinterpreting syntactic ambiguity resolution as a form of lexical ambiguity resolution obviates the need for special parsing principles to account for syntactic interpretation preferences, reconciles a number of apparently conflicting results concerning the roles of lexical and contextual information in sentence processing, explains differences among ambiguities in terms of ease of resolution, and provides a more unified account of language comprehension than was previously available.
