Comparative studies on Ar and He closed-cycle MHD power plants combined with fossil fuel

Comparative studies on Ar and He closed-cycle MHD power plants combined with fossil fuel are performed. The sizes of a regenerative heat exchanger and a boiler are expected to be smaller for He than for Ar. The pressure loss of a working gas in a regenerative heat exchanger is reduced for He. The purification subsystem for He is expected to be more compact and economical than that for Ar; but a larger compressor is required for He than for Ar.     

Intussusception caused by a carcinoma of the cecum during pregnancy: report of a case and review of the literature

Respiratory infections are the most common infection in children. They differ remarkably according to age, bacteria and viruses. Therefore a careful history of outbreak, age, former infections, involvement of surroundings, symptoms, etc are essential. The present study included 50 children, aged between 0.3 and 12 yrs, all treated ambulatorily. 21 received brodimoprim (B) and 29 erythromycin (E). Indications were: tonsillitis, bronchitis, otitis media, sinusitis and scarlet fever. Dosages were: B was given 10 mg/kg body weight (b.w.) initially followed by 5 mg/kg b.w., once-a-day. The duration of treatment varied between 4 and 14 days (mean 8.3 days). E was given 30.50 mg/kg b.w. 3 times per day; duration 4 to 14 days (mean 8.6 days). Overall results were: in group B:12 cures, 5 improvements, 3 failures; 1 not assessable. In group E: 20 cures, 8 improvements, 1 failure. Side effects: in group B: vomiting (1), skin reaction (2), discontinuation (2); in group E: skin reaction (1), diarrhea (5), diarrhea+vomiting (1); discontinuation (2). The differences in efficacy and tolerability in the two groups are not statistically significant. The improved compliance with a single versus t.i.d. dosages has to be taken into account.     

Spherical gradient-index polymer lens with low spherical aberration

A sphere lens with a spherical gradient index (GRIN) was prepared by the modified suspension polymerization technique. GRIN spheres with quadratic- and linear-index distributions were obtained by two different methods to confirm the effect of the GRIN profile on the focusing property of the sphere lens. It was confirmed in both theory and experiment that the spherical aberration of such GRIN spheres was remarkably decreased compared with that of a homogeneous sphere.     

Glutamate-stimulated proliferation of rat retinal pigment epithelial cells

We investigated the effects of glutamate on cell proliferation and the expression of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and its receptor (FGF-R1) mRNA in cultured rat retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. The number of primary RPE cells was significantly higher after treatment with 0.2 to 1.0 mM glutamate (maximum at 1.0 mM) for 7 days than in controls. Glutamate-stimulated cell proliferation was abolished by (+)-5-methyl-10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a,d]cyclohepten-5,10-imine (MK-801), but not by 6,7-dinitroquinoxaline-2,3-dione or L(+)-2-amino-3-phosphonopropionic acid. Proliferation was increased to a similar extent by N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), but not by kainate, alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-3-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid or trans-(+/-)-1-amino-1,3-cyclopentanedicarboxylic acid. NMDA-receptor-like immunoreactivity was detected in most cells cultured. Treatment of cells with glutamate increased the level of bFGF mRNA and, to a lesser extent, that of FGF-R1 mRNA, which peaked 2 and 4 days, respectively, after glutamate was added. The increase in bFGF mRNA induced by glutamate was inhibited by MK-801. These findings suggest that glutamate might stimulate proliferation of RPE cells through activation of NMDA receptors and expression of bFGF and further suggest that glutamate may be involved in the proliferative changes of RPE cells in retinal wound healing.     

Effect of dopants on transmission loss of low-OH-content optical fibres

We formerly developed very-low-OH-content optical fibres consisting of a borosilicate cladding and a phosphosilicate core. The transmission loss of the fibre was 0.47 dB/km at 1.2 ?m. We have further investigated the effects of dopants in pure silica on the losses of fibres. The letter clarifies the effects of dopants on the loss in the near-infrared region.     

The micro-nanoformability of Pt-based metallic glass and the nanoforming of three-dimensional structures

Pt_48.75Pd_9.75Cu_19.5P₂₂ amorphous alloy exhibits obvious glass transition behavior at a temperature of T_g=502 K, which is below the crystallization temperature T_x=588 K, and develops a supercooled liquid state in a wide temperature range of ΔT_x (=T_x−T_g)=86 K. The present paper investigates the macroscopic and microscopic deformation behavior of the material and the possibility of micro-nano forming as a fabrication method and material for nano-devices. On a macroscopic scale, the material exhibits a Newtonian viscous flow in a supercooled liquid state. An index of the microformability is also evaluated by the geometrical transferability of a die shape to the material. For this study, we fabricated V-grooved micro dies of (100) Si by a silicon process. The V-groove dies are from 100 nm to 1 μm wide. The material exhibits superior formability on micrometer and nanometer scales and may possibly be applied to micro-nanomaterials for micro-nano devices.     

Self-sizing network—algorithmic aspects

This paper presents a bandwidth adjustment mechanism for a self-sizing network, which has been proposed as an operation concept for ATM networks and is based on the autonomous adjustment of virtual path (VP) bandwidth. Several simple algorithms for estimating the bandwidth demand—the minimum bandwidth needed to satisfy the quality-of-service (QoS) objectives—are proposed for the case where QoS-guaranteed virtual channels (VCs) and best-effort VCs are multiplexed in separate VPs. The proposed algorithms use only a few assumptions about traffic characteristics, making them applicable to a wide range of traffic types. In addition, errors in VP bandwidth estimation are corrected by adaptively adjusting the VP bandwidth using real-time traffic measurement. Numerical examples confirm that the proposed algorithms can quickly restore the QoSs of VPs from any initial conditions and keep them at an appropriate level. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Identification of Aloe species by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis

Juice and integument of leaves of 3 Aloe species, Aloe vera, A. ferox and A. africana, are not allowed to be used as food according to the Pharmaceutical Affairs Law in Japan. On the other hand, whole leaves of A. arborescens can be used as food. The present study was designed to distinguish Aloe species by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. DNA was isolated from fresh and dried leaves of the 4 Aloe species. Five out of 32 different 10-mer primers examined were useful for analysis. By comparison of the characteristic bands of PCR products on agarose gel, it was possible to distinguish the 4 species. Thus, the botanical species of Aloe in commercial food products can be identified by RAPD analysis.
