BACKGROUND: Olive oil production is an important economical activity in the Aegean region of Turkey. However, the effluents of the olive oil producing mills with their high organic loads and toxic compounds are causing serious environmental problems. The anaerobic biological treatment of olive mill wastewater (OMWW) using the treatment plants of the regional industries could be a method of choice and within the scope of this study floccular and granular sludges were investigated in batch mode for their success in the treatment of OMWW while producing biogas. The major limitation of this treatment is the inhibition of methanogenic bacteria by the phenolic compounds in OMWW. Thus an integrated solution was suggested in which a pre‐treatment step (dephenolization) was also introduced before biological step. RESULTS: The effluents of 27 olive mills out of 47 were found to have total phenolics (TP) less than 3 g L?1 and could be treated anaerobically after simple dilution. The biogas production for the untreated OMWW was higher for floccular sludge than for the granular sludge (68.5 mL and 45.7 mL respectively). Combined pre‐treatment experiments, first coagulation with polyaluminum chloride, followed by flocculation with cationic polyelectrolyte and finally Fenton's oxidation, could remove 80% of TP and 95% of the total suspended solids. CONCLUSION: OMWW having TP values less than 3 g L?1 can be treated anaerobically using floccular sludge after simple dilution and biogas can be produced. BACKGROUND: Recent studies indicate that microalgal cultivation using organic carbon sources has the potential to provide high yields. Haematococcus pluvialis and Chlorella zofingiensis, two important carotenoid producers, were selected for co‐culture cultivations to utilize the unique advantages of both organisms. A co‐culture production process was investigated in terms of the effects of organic carbon source, co‐cultivation method, and light intensity on carotenoid production. RESULTS: The addition of 5 g L?1 glucose resulted in a growth rate of 0.60 day?1 for H. pluvialis and 0.59 day?1 for C. zofingiensis, which were higher than those for other carbon sources tested and the control group. Incremental increase of light intensity instead of direct increase to 170 µE m?2s? prevented cell loss in both cultures. Co‐cultivation based on cell numbers (60% H. pluvialis and 40% C. zofingiensis) prevented population domination of one microalgae over the other. The biomass production rate of the co‐culture was higher (0.61 g L?1 day?1) in glucose‐enriched medium. The total carotenoid content of the co‐culture in the control culture was higher (0.83 mg total carotenoids g?1 cell) than that obtained in glucose‐enriched medium (0.54 mg total carotenoids g?1 cell) but not as high as the amounts reached in mono‐cultures. CONCLUSION: Total carotenoid content of the mono‐cultures gave higher yields in standard bold basal medium (BBM). Preliminary high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) studies indicated a variation in the amounts of astaxanthin isomers produced. Further studies are in progress to determine the effects of carbon‐enriched media and co‐cultivation on the type of isomers and caretenoids produced. Eukaryotic elongation factor 2 (eEF-2) can undergo ADP-ribosylation in the absence of diphtheria toxin. The binding of free ADP-ribose and endogenous transferase-dependent ADP-ribosylation were distinct reactions for eEF-2, as indicated by different findings. Incubation of eEF-2 tryptic fragment 32/33 kDa (32F) with NAD was ADP-ribosylated and gave rise to the covalent binding of ADP-ribose to eEF-2. 32F was revealed to be at the C-terminal by Edman degradation sequence analysis. In our study, the elution of 32F from SDS-PAGE was ADP-ribosylated both in the presence and absence of diphtheria toxin. These results suggest that endogenous ADP-ribosylation of 32F might be related to protein synthesis. This modification appears to be important for the cell function.  相似文献

Bending tests on a ceramic material, lead zirconate-titanate, with varying amounts of porosity, show that the decrease in strength due to spherical pores is much less than would be expected from the stress concentration factor. Using the Weibull probabilistic approach to brittle strength, it is shown that reasonable predictions may be made for the median strength for porosity up to about ten percent.
Résumé Les essais de flexion sur un matériau céramique: zirconate-titanate de plomb, avec des quantités variables de porosités, montrent que la diminution de la résistance due à la porosité est plus faible que celle donnée par le facteur de concentration de contraintes. En utilisant la méthode statistique de Weibull pour la résistance fragile, il est montré que des prévisions raisonables peuvent être faites pour déterminer la résistance médiane pour une porosité jusqu'aux environs de dix pourcents.

GLP-1, an incretin hormone of the enteroinsular axis with insulinotropic and glucagonostatic activity, is secreted after nutrient ingestion. GLP-1 is mainly produced by intestinal L-cells in the lower gastrointestinal tract (GIT); simple carbohydrates are absorbed in the upper GIT and alpha-glucosidase inhibition leads to augmented and prolonged GLP-1 release in normal subjects. In a cross-over study, 100 mg acarbose or placebo was administered simultaneously with 100 g sucrose to 11 hyperglycaemic Type 2 diabetic patients poorly controlled with diet and sulphonylureas. Plasma levels of GLP-1, insulin, C-peptide, glugacon, GIP, glucose and H2-exhalation were measured over 6 h. Differences in the integrated responses over the observation period were evaluated by repeated measurement analysis of variance with fasting values used as covariates. With acarbose, sucrose reached the colon 60-90 min after ingestion as indicated by a significant increment in breath hydrogen exhalation (p = 0.005). After an early GLP-1 increment 15 min after sucrose under both conditions, GLP-1 release was prolonged in the acarbose group (p = 0.001; significant from 210 to 360 min.). Initially (0-150 min), glucose (p = 0.001), insulin (p = 0.001), and GIP (p < 0.001) were suppressed by acarbose, whereas later there were no significant differences. Glucagon levels were higher with acarbose in the last 3 h of the 6 h observation period (p = 0.02). We conclude that in hyperglycaemic Type 2 diabetic patients, ingestion of acarbose with a sucrose load leads to elevated and prolonged GLP-1 release.  相似文献

Phase change materials (PCM) have an increasingly more important role as a thermal energy storage (TES) media. However, leakage problem of PCM causes limitation during their integration in TES systems. Therefore, the encapsulation of PCMs is attracting research interest to extend usage of PCMs in real TES applications in recent years. In this study, hydroxystearic acid (HSA) was encapsulated with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and different PMMA comonomer shells via emulsion polymerization method for the first time in literature. HSA with high melting temperature range (74–78°C) can widen the scope of using PCMs, and the encapsulated form can make it more versatile. The chemical structures, morphologies, and thermophysical properties of capsules were determined by FT‐IR, SEM, DSC, TGA, and thermal infrared camera. Among the produced HSA capsule candidates, PMMA‐HEMA is the most promising with latent heat of 48.5 J/g with melting range of 47 to 85°C. SEM analysis indicated that the capsules have spherical shape with compact surface at nano‐micro (100–440 nm) size range; however, some capsules exhibited agglomeration.  相似文献

The low-affinity p75 receptor for nerve growth factor (p75NGFR) has been implicated in mediating neuronal cell death in vitro. A recent in vitro study from our laboratory showed that the death of sensory neurons can be prevented by reducing the levels of p75NGFR with antisense oligonucleotides. To determine if p75NGFR also functions as a death signal in vivo, we have attempted to reduce its expression in peripheral sensory neurons by applying antisense oligonucleotides to the proximal end of the transected sciatic or median and ulnar nerves. We report here that antisense oligonucleotides, when applied to the proximal stump of a transected peripheral nerve, are retrogradely transported and effectively reduce p75NGFR protein levels in sensory neurons located in the dorsal root ganglia. Furthermore, treatment of the proximal nerve stump with antisense p75NGFR oligonucleotides significantly reduced the loss of these axotomized sensory neurons. These findings further support the view that p75NGFR is a death signaling molecule and that it signals death in axotomized neurons in the neonatal sensory nervous system.  相似文献

Electrovibration holds great potential for creating vivid and realistic haptic sensations on touchscreens. Ideally, a designer should be able to control what users feel independent of the number of fingers they use, the movements they make, and how hard they press. We sought to understand the perception and physics of such interactions by determining the smallest 125 Hz electrovibration voltage that 15 participants could reliably feel when performing four different touch interactions at two normal forces. The results proved for the first time that both finger motion and contact by a second finger significantly affect what the user feels. At a given voltage, a single moving finger experiences much larger fluctuating electrovibration forces than a single stationary finger, making electrovibration much easier to feel during interactions involving finger movement. Indeed, only about 30% of participants could detect the stimulus without motion. Part of this difference comes from the fact that relative motion greatly increases the electrical impedance between a finger and the screen, as shown via detailed measurements from one individual. By contrast, threshold-level electrovibration did not significantly affect the coefficient of kinetic friction in any conditions. These findings help lay the groundwork for delivering consistent haptic feedback via electrovibration.  相似文献
