Full‐field identification methods are increasingly used to adequately identify constitutive parameters to describe the mechanical behavior of materials. This paper investigates the more recently introduced one‐step method of integrated digital image correlation (IDIC) with respect to the most commonly used two‐step method of finite element model updating (FEMU), which uses a subset‐based DIC algorithm. To make the comparison as objective as possible, both methods are implemented in the most equivalent manner and use the same FE model. Various virtual test cases are studied to assess the performance of both methods when subjected to different error sources: (1) systematic errors, (2) poor initial guesses for the constitutive parameters, (3) image noise, (4) constitutive model errors, and (5) experimental errors. Results show that, despite the mathematical similarity of both methods, IDIC produces less erroneous and more reliable results than FEMU, particularly for more challenging test cases exhibiting small displacements, complex kinematics, misalignment of the specimen, and image noise. To accurately predict ductile failures of new advanced metals, continuum damage models (CDMs) require experimental determination of material-specific damage parameter(s). While various experimental techniques are being used to determine these damage parameter(s), possible systematic errors due to methodological differences in damage definition have yet to be fully revealed. With the aim of finding the most reliable ductile damage quantification strategy for CDMs, this work provides an in-depth comparison of six theoretically equivalent methodologies by considering measurement accuracy, precision, damage spectrum, spatial resolution and practicality. It is found that the methodologies that quantify ductile damage from its geometry introduce significant systematic errors as they probe a very limited damage spectrum, whereas the methodologies that probe the degradation of a mechanical property suffer from low precision and high complexity, especially for high strains and material anisotropy.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to show the impact of different assumptions and methodological choices on the life-cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) performance of biofuels by providing the results for different key parameters on a consistent basis. These include co-products allocation or system expansion, N2O emissions from crop cultivation, conversion systems and co-product applications and direct land-use change emissions. The results show that the GHG performance of biofuels varies depending on the method applied and the system boundaries selected. Key factors include selected allocation procedures and the location of production and related yields, reference land and soil N2O emissions.  相似文献

Economic models derived from optimizing behavior are typically characterized by the properties of non-linearity and saddle-path instability. The typical solution method involves deriving the stable arm of the saddle-path and calculating suitable “jumps” to bring the path of endogenous variables onto this stable arm. The solution for the stable arm can be determined using a range of different approaches. In this paper we examine the extent to which the success of these alternative approaches can be evaluated. Any method of evaluation will be dependent upon the amount of information that is known about a particular model solution. For some deterministic models the only information known with certainty about the path of the model solution are values taken by steady-state solutions; the rest of the path must be approximated in some way based on numerical solutions derived from non-linear ordinary differential equations. In some special cases it is possible to derive a closed-form solution of the entire path. As an example of a model with a closed-form solution, we consider a simple linear model with two stable complex-valued eigenvalues and one unstable real-valued eigenvalue. The model is then employed as a benchmark to compare the properties of model solutions derived using two well-known solution algorithms. Because the model has complex-valued eigenvalues it will have cyclic dynamics and thus problems encountered in solving these dynamics will likely coincide with some of the problems that solution algorithms have in solving non-linear models. Since the entire solution path of the model is known, it is possible to derive deeper insights into the factors that are likely to ensure the success or failure of different solution approaches than would be the case if less information about the solution path was available.An earlier version of this paper was presented to the Ninth International Conference on Computing in Economics and Finance organized by the Society of Computational Economics, University of Washington at Seattle, July 11–13, 2003. This paper scrutinizes the reliability of indentation-based damage quantification, frequently used by many industrial and academic researchers. In this methodology, damage evolution parameters for continuum damage models are experimentally measured by probing the deformation-induced degradation of either hardness or indentation modulus. In this critical assessment the damage evolution in different sheet metals was investigated using this indentation approach, whereby the obtained results were verified by other experimental techniques (scanning electron microscopy, X-ray microtomography and highly sensitive density measurements), and by finite element simulations. This extensive experimental–numerical assessment reveals that the damage-induced degradation of both hardness and modulus is at least partially, but most likely completely, masked by other deformation-induced microstructural mechanisms (e.g. grain shape change, strain hardening, texture development, residual stresses and indentation pile-up). It is therefore concluded that hardness-based or modulus-based damage quantification methods are intrinsically flawed and should not be used for the determination of a damage parameter.  相似文献

The reliability of metallic microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) depends on time-dependent deformation such as creep. Key to this process is the interaction between microstructural length scales and dimensional length scales, so-called size-effects. As a first critical step towards studying these size-effects in time-dependent deformation, a purely mechanical experimental methodology has been developed, which is presented here. The methodology entails the application of a constant deflection to a μm-sized free-standing aluminum-alloy cantilever beam for a prolonged period of time. After this load is removed, the deformation evolution is immediately recorded by acquiring surface topographies through confocal optical profilometry. Image correlation and an algorithm based on elastic beam theory are applied to the full-field beam profiles to correct drift and improve limited optical profilometry precision, yielding the tip deflection as function of time with a precision of 7% of the surface roughness. A proof-of-principle measurement reveals a remarkable time-dependent deflection recovery. Assumptions and errors of the methodology are analyzed. Finally, it is concluded that the methodology is most suitable for the investigation of creep due to the simplicity of specimen handling, preparation and setup design, while maximizing long term stability and deformation precision.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Multifrequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (MFBIA) is a novel method to assess body composition in elderly subjects. However, it is unclear whether MFBIA can detect changes in body water compartments in elders. We aimed to determine the within-subject variability of MFBIA and the responsiveness to a diuretic intervention in aged subjects with a stable fluid balance. METHODS: We selected 12 healthy active elderly subjects (5 male, 7 female) with a mean age of 75 years. Total body water and extracellular fluid (ECF) were measured by deuterium oxide- and potassium bromide-dilution techniques. Within-subject variability in total body MFBIA was assessed by performing four measurements at 1, 5, 50, and 100 kHz within a 2-month period. Subsequently, responsiveness of MFBIA to the ECF loss caused by oral administration of 40 mg of furosemide was determined. RESULTS: Within-subject variability in MFBIA at 1, 5, 50, and 100 kHz expressed as standard deviations was 21, 19, 14, and 14 Ohm (omega), respectively. Furosemide caused a mean weight loss of 1.8 +/- 0.6 kg, which resulted in significant increases in impedance of 57 +/- 24 omega at 1 kHz and 37 +/- 12 omega at 100 kHz (p < .001). The responsiveness of MFBIA for the diuretic intervention was best at 5 kHz (responsiveness index = 1.98). CONCLUSIONS: Within-subject variability of MFBIA was small in healthy elderly subjects with stable fluid balance. Responsiveness of MFBIA to 9% furosemide-induced ECF loss was excellent. These data support the necessity for further clinical assessment of the value of MFBIA in monitoring fluid balance in geriatric patients.  相似文献

PURPOSE: The biological and therapeutic implications of extravesical involvement in patients with bladder carcinoma in situ were analyzed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of 138 patients with bladder carcinoma in situ 87 (63%) had extravesical involvement, including the prostate in 53, the upper urinary tract in 11 and both structures in 23 (pan-urothelial involvement). With survival free of disease as an end point, univariate and multivariate analyses were done. RESULTS: Patients with extravesical involvement had worse survival than those with bladder carcinoma in situ alone (p < 0.001). In multivariate analysis prostate involvement (p = 0.0007) and pan-urothelial involvement (p = 0.0001) were selected as significant variables. When pathological patterns were considered prostatic stromal invasion (p = 0.0002) was the only variable selected. With these data 3 patient groups with disease mortality risk were defined. CONCLUSIONS: Prostate involvement and pan-urothelial involvement behave as independent prognostic factors, with the latter probably reflecting an extremetly diffuse character of carcinoma in situ. However, the upper urinary tract had no influence on survival. In patients with upper urinary tract and/or prostatic involvement limited to the mucosa treatment can be conservative. Patients with ductal or stromal involvement should undergo radical treatment. For upper tract involvement conservative approaches may be considered if there are no radiological signs of invasion or low grade tumor.  相似文献

We evaluated the performance of an automatic polymerase chain reaction (PCR) detection system for identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in respiratory specimens. Six hundred and two respiratory specimens, including 557 sputa and 45 bronchial washing samples, were analyzed using the COBAS AMPLICOR Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) test. The results were compared with those obtained from acid-fast microscopy, conventional culture, and clinical history. In cases of discrepancy between the results of the COBAS AMPLICOR MTB test and culture, the medical history of the patient was reviewed, the COBAS AMPLICOR MTB test was repeated, and the gene encoding M. tuberculosis superoxide dismutase was screened using PCR (SOD-PCR). Fourteen samples were excluded because the internal control test result was negative. Of 57 specimens that were culture positive for Mycobacterium species, 40 appeared to have growth of M. tuberculosis and 21 were smear positive for acid-fast bacteria. The sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values for the COBAS AMPLICOR MTB test evaluated at our laboratory were 85.0% (34/40), 99.3% (544/548), 89.5% (34/38), and 98.9% (544/550), respectively. Three specimens that were culture positive for M. tuberculosis but negative by COBAS AMPLICOR MTB test were positive when rechecked by both COBAS AMPLICOR MTB test and SOD-PCR. Among the four specimens with positive reactions on both COBAS AMPLICOR MTB test and SOD-PCR that were culture negative, two were from patients who had been receiving antituberculosis treatment, one was from a patient who had been treated for tuberculosis for 1 year, and the other was from a patient who died of sepsis with adult respiratory distress syndrome. In more than 70% of smear-negative and culture-positive specimens and 86.4% of smear-positive specimens, M. tuberculosis was identified by the COBAS AMPLICOR MTB test within 10 hours after receipt of the specimens. Our data show that the COBAS AMPLICOR MTB test provides rapid and accurate detection of M. tuberculosis in respiratory specimens.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) methylmalonic acid (MMA) is increased in neurological patients with low serum cobalamin (Cbl, vitamin B12) concentrations as opposed to neurological patients with normal serum Cbl concentrations. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We measured MMA concentrations in serum and CSF of neurological patients with low serum cobalamin concentrations, but without overt cobalamin related manifestations such as anemia or combined disease of the cord, and neurological patients with normal serum cobalamin concentrations (controls). RESULTS: Serum and CSF MMA concentrations were significantly higher in patients than in controls. Serum MMA was elevated in 4 patients of whom 3 had clearly elevated CSF MMA concentrations. CONCLUSION: Strong indications for cobalamin deficiency can be found not only in serum but also in CSF of patients with seemingly asymptomatic low serum cobalamin concentrations.  相似文献
