Girls with a history of premature pubarche, i.e. appearance of pubic hair before 8 years of age, show hyperinsulinism in response to an oral glucose tolerance test. As hyperinsulinaemia has a major role in dyslipaemia, and is considered an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, we assessed the patterns of plasma insulin concentration after a standard oral glucose tolerance test as well as fasting serum lipid, lipoprotein, and sex hormone-binding globulin concentrations in girls (n = 81) with premature pubarche compared with girls (n = 55) matched with them for stage and bone age to ascertain their metabolic states to identify those potentially at risk for the development of premature cardiovascular disease. Mean serum insulin concentrations were higher in patients at all pubertal stages, and associated with elevated serum triglyceride, very low density cholesterol and very low density triglyceride concentrations (p value range 0.04 to < 0.0001) but reduced sex hormone-binding globulin. Premature pubarche patients also displayed higher low density to high density lipoprotein cholesterol ratios compared with control subjects (p = 0.004 to 0.008). In conclusion, hyperinsulinaemia, decreased sex hormone-binding globulin concentrations and an unfavourable lipid pattern are common features in premature pubarche girls supporting the contention that atherogenic abnormalities composing the metabolic syndrome could start in childhood. To determine the clinical sequelae of such clustering of metabolic deviations, girls who were identified need to be followed up for the potential development of premature cardiovascular disease.  相似文献

We present a decision support system to help archaeologists in classifying wheel-made pottery pieces by its profile. A novel shape characterization method, using Mathematical Morphology, is introduced for this purpose. Each profile is represented as a vector, obtained by sampling the so called morphological curves (erosion, dilation, opening and closing), and Euclidean Distance is used as a similarity measure. We show results of our method applied to a profile database of Iberian Pottery from the upper valley of Guadalquivir River (Spain).  相似文献

Range Quickselect, a simple modification of the well-known Quickselect algorithm for selection, can be used to efficiently find an element with rank k in a given range [i..j], out of n given elements. We study basic cost measures of Range Quickselect by computing exact and asymptotic results for the expected number of passes, comparisons and data moves during the execution of this algorithm.The key element appearing in the analysis of Range Quickselect is a trivariate recurrence that we solve in full generality. The general solution of the recurrence proves to be very useful, as it allows us to tackle several related problems, besides the analysis that originally motivated us.In particular, we have been able to carry out a precise analysis of the expected number of moves of the pth element when selecting the jth smallest element with standard Quickselect, where we are able to give both exact and asymptotic results.Moreover, we can apply our general results to obtain exact and asymptotic results for several parameters in binary search trees, namely the expected number of common ancestors of the nodes with rank i and j, the expected size of the subtree rooted at the least common ancestor of the nodes with rank i and j, and the expected distance between the nodes of ranks i and j.  相似文献

Pheomelanin is a natural yellow-reddish sulfur-containing pigment derived from tyrosinase-catalyzed oxidation of tyrosine in presence of cysteine. Generally, the formation of melanin pigments is a protective response against the damaging effects of UV radiation in skin. However, pheomelanin, like other photosensitizing substances, can trigger, following exposure to UV radiation, photochemical reactions capable of modifying and damaging cellular components. The photoproperties of this natural pigment have been studied by analyzing pheomelanin effect on oxidation/nitration of tyrosine induced by UVB radiation at different pH values and in presence of iron ions. Photoproperties of pheomelanin can be modulated by various experimental conditions, ranging from the photoprotection to the triggering of potentially damaging photochemical reactions. The study of the photomodification of l-Tyrosine in the presence of the natural pigment pheomelanin has a special relevance, since this tyrosine oxidation/nitration pathway can potentially occur in vivo in tissues exposed to sunlight and play a role in the mechanisms of tissue damage induced by UV radiation.  相似文献

Bioavailability and biological properties of flavonoid glycosides can be improved after the enzymatic hydrolysis of specific glycosyl groups. In this study, we evaluate the antioxidant and antiproliferative potential of rutin after enzymatic hydrolysis performed by α-l-rhamnosidases (hesperidinase from Penicillium sp. and naringinase from Penicillium decumbens) previously heated at 70 °C for 30 min to inactivate the undesirable β-d-glucosidase activity. The highest in vitro antioxidant activity determined by DPPH radical scavenging was achieved with rutin hydrolyzed by hesperidinase. Rutin was predominantly bioconverted into quercetin-3-glucoside. There was no statistical difference between xanthine oxidase inhibition by rutin before and after hydrolysis. However, in vitro inhibitory activity against ten human tumor cell lines showed that hydrolyzed rutin exerted a more potent antiproliferative effect than quercetin and rutin on various cancer cell lines, specially glioma, and ovarian and breast adenocarcinomas. These results indicate that quercetin-3-glucoside could be a promising functional derivative obtained by rutin hydrolysis.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The production of biodegradable wastes and their disposal cause a major financial problem in many industrial activities. Co‐composting was thought to be a feasible alternative for disposing of a strongly alkaline waste from the pharmaceutical industry (AW), mainly consisting of animal fats and partially hydrolysed proteins in a stable emulsion. The AW was added gradually, during the early phase of the composting process, to a substrate made up of ‘alperujo’ (AL), the wet, lignocellulosic, solid by‐product of the olive oil industry, and fresh horse manure, which was added to improve the physical structure of the composting substrate. RESULTS: The addition of AW reduced organic matter degradation during composting, enriched the amount of organic compounds in the water‐ and alkali‐soluble fractions and increased mineral salt contents. Thus, significantly higher electrical conductivity, humification indices and contents of organic matter, P, K and Na were recorded in the end‐composts resulting from AW treatments. However, the application of one AW‐based compost led to soil N immobilisation, as revealed by an incubation experiment, which must be considered in order to avoid potential N starvation in the short term. CONCLUSION: According to these results, composting can be used as a disposal alternative for AW, leading to end‐products with potential uses as organic amendments or fertilisers for agricultural systems. In addition, these composts could be used to produce alternative liquid organic fertilisers, based on the extraction of their humic‐like fraction. Evaluation was made of friction stir welded joints, identifying conditions that resulted in satisfactory welded joints free from defects and with microstructural characteristics that provided good mechanical properties. Microstructural characterization and cooling curve analysis of the joints with lower and higher heat inputs evidenced deformation below and above the non-recrystallization temperature (Tnr) and dynamic recrystallization during microstructural evolution. Microscopy analyses showed acicular ferrite, bainitic ferrite, and coalesced bainite microstructures in the stir zone of the cold weld (lower heat input), while the stir zone of the hot weld (higher heat input) contained bainitic ferrite, acicular ferrite, coalesced bainite, martensite, and dispersed carbides. Granular bainite and dispersed carbides were observed in all the heat affected zones. Analysis of the microstructural transformations, together with the thermal history of the joints, showed that the variable that had the greatest influence on the morphology of the bainite (granular bainite/bainitic ferrite) was the deformation temperature.  相似文献

The occurrence of in vitro amino acid activity in bacterial strains associated with fresh pork sausages packaged in different atmospheres and kept in refrigeration was studied. The presence of biogenic amines in decarboxylase broth was confirmed by ion-exchange chromatography and by the presence of the corresponding decarboxylase genes by PCR. From the 93 lactic acid bacteria and 100 enterobacteria strains analysed, the decarboxylase medium underestimates the number of biogenic amine-producer strains. 28% of the lactic acid bacteria produced tyramine and presented the tdc gene. All the tyramine-producer strains were molecularly identified as Carnobacterium divergens. Differences on the relative abundance of C. divergens were observed among the different packaging atmospheres assayed. After 28 days of storage, the presence of argon seems to inhibit C. divergens growth, while packing under vacuum seems to favour it. Among enterobacteria, putrescine was the amine more frequently produced (87%), followed by cadaverine (85%); agmatine and tyramine were only produced by 13 and 1%, respectively, of the strains analysed. Packing under vacuum or in an atmosphere containing nitrogen seems to inhibit the growth of enterobacteria which produce simultaneously putrescine, cadaverine, and agmatine. Contrarily, over-wrapping or packing in an atmosphere containing argon seems to favour the growth of agmatine producer-enterobacteria. The production of putrescine and cadaverine was associated with the presence of the corresponding amino acid decarboxylase genes. The biogenic amine-producer strains were included in a wide range of enterobacterial species, including Kluyvera intermedia, Enterobacter aerogenes, Yersinia kristensenii, Serratia grimesii, Serratia ficaria, Yersinia rodhei, Providencia vermicola and Obesumbacterium proteus.  相似文献

It is often desirable to increase the capacity and the covered distance in lightwave TV systems. For doing so, the conventional CATV channel set-usually placed within the 50 to 550 MHz frequency range-may be up-shifted, by means of a subcarrier, to a low microwave frequency range, typically located at 2 GHz. Next, this shifted spectrum directly modulates a laser diode, in the analog AM mode. It is shown that this up-shift procedure may dislodge a number of nonlinear distortion components from the useful TV band. Consequently, the system effective optical modulation index may be increased, allowing for an expansion in the channel capacity or covered distance. This enlarged capacity or distance may compensate for the modest price increase concerning the up-shift equipment. Early stages in vaccinia virus (VV) assembly involve the recruitment of cellular membranes from the endoplasmic reticulum-Golgi intermediate compartment (ERGIC) to virus factories (or virosomes). The key viral factors involved in this process are not yet known. We have previously identified and characterized two viral proteins, of 21 kDa (A17L gene) and 15 kDa (A14L gene), that associate with tubulovesicular elements related to the ERGIC and are localized in viral membranes at all stages of virion assembly. We showed that the 21-kDa protein is not responsible for the recruitment of membranes from the ERGIC to viral factories. However, it appears to be essential for the organization of viral membranes. In this investigation we have generated a VV recombinant, VVindA14L, in which the expression of the A14L gene is inducibly regulated by the Escherichia coli lacI operator-repressor system. Repression of 15-kDa protein synthesis has a dramatic effect on virus yields and severely impairs plaque formation. Compared to wild-type VV, reduced amounts of 15-kDa protein are produced in VVindA14L-infected cells in the presence of IPTG (isopropyl-beta-D-thiogalactoside), and this correlates with a small-plaque phenotype and reduced VVindA14L yields under these conditions. In the absence of the 15-kDa protein, early and late viral protein syntheses proceed normally; however, proteolytic cleavage of the major core precursors is inhibited. Electron microscopic examination of cells infected with VVindA14L under nonpermissive conditions reveals the presence of numerous membranous elements that look like unfinished or disassembled crescents interspersed between electron-dense masses. These abnormal membrane elements are usually well separated from the surfaces of the dense structures. These findings show that the 15-kDa protein is essential for VV morphogenesis and indicate that this polypeptide is necessary both for the correct assembly of viral crescents and for their stable attachment to the surfaces of viral factories.  相似文献
