The terahertz region of the electromagnetic spectrum, spanning from 100 GHz through 10 THz, is of increasing importance for a wide range of scientific, military and commercial applications. This interest is spurred by the unique properties of this spectral band and the very recent development of convenient terahertz sources and detectors. However, the terahertz band is also extremely challenging, in large part because it spans the transition from traditional electronics to photonics. This paper reviews the importance of this frequency band and summarizes the efforts of scientists and engineers to span the "terahertz technology gap." The emphasis is on solid-state circuits that use nonlinear diodes to translate the functionality of microwave technology to much higher frequencies. 相似文献

Altered glycosylation of the env-sea oncoprotein inhibits intracellular transport and transformation
The transforming gene product of the S13 avian erythroblastosis virus, env-sea, is a member of the growth factor receptor class of tyrosine kinases. The env-sea precursor protein gp155env-sea is proteolytically processed into the mature cleavage products gp85env and gp70env-sea, which are subsequently terminally glycosylated and transported to the cell surface. Previous studies have shown that the abnormal glycosylation of gp155env-sea induced by the carbohydrate processing inhibitor castanospermine blocks the proteolytic cleavage of gp155env-sea and impairs its transforming ability. We have shown recently that an uncleaved but fully glycosylated sea-encoded protein retains the ability to transform chicken embryo fibroblasts, indicating that proteolytic processing is not essential for transformation by the env-sea tyrosine kinase. To address the question of how castanospermine blocks transformation by env-sea, differential sucrose gradient centrifugation was performed on env-sea-transformed cells treated with the inhibitor. This report shows that no surface forms of env-sea could be detected in inhibitor-treated cells, suggesting that castanospermine acts by blocking the transport of sea-encoded proteins to the cell surface. 相似文献

The extraction of nitrogenous material from Brewers' spent grain (BSG) by solvents (water, sodium chloride solution, aqueous alcohol, acidic and alkaline solutions) commonly used to extract cereal proteins, resulted in the relatively low (0·2 to 8·5%) recovery of the total nitrogen. The recovery of nitrogenous material by the use of aqueous alkaline solutions was increased from 3–4% to 41% when the BSG was subjected to cellulase incubation prior to extraction. Approximately 75% of the nitrogen was solubilized with trifluoracetic acid. Detergent solutions (acid, neutral) solubilized more than 80% of the total nitrogen of the BSG. The low solubility of the nitrogenous constituents by conventional protein solvents could be the result of association between cellulosic material and protein. 相似文献

This letter reviews the design, construction, and measurement of a 210 GHz heterostructure barrier varactor frequency quintupler. The quintupler utilizes planar heterostructure barrier varactors (HBVs) based on the InGaAs/InAlAs/AlAs material system and has produced a measured output power of 5.2 mW with 5.2% conversion efficiency at 210 GHz. This performance is comparable to the state-of-the-art results reported in the literature for HBV frequency triplers operating at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. 相似文献

Surface-based Transport Model for Mixed-Size Sediment 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
We present a transport model for mixed sand/gravel sediments. Fractional transport rates are referenced to the size distribution of the bed surface, rather than subsurface, making the model completely explicit and capable of predicting transient conditions. The model is developed using a new data set of 48 coupled observations of flow, transport, and bed surface grain size using five different sediments. The model incorporates a hiding function that resolves discrepancies observed among earlier hiding functions. The model uses the full size distribution of the bed surface, including sand, and incorporates a nonlinear effect of sand content on gravel transport rate not included in previous models. The model shares some common elements with two previous surface-based transport models, but differs in using the full surface size distribution and in that it is directly developed from a relatively comprehensive data set with unambiguous measurement of surface grain size over a range of flow, transport rate, and sediments. 相似文献

Tuberculous meningitis remains an important illness that can be difficult to diagnose in a timely fashion and carries significant morbidity. We present a retrospective review of the cases of tuberculous meningitis diagnosed and treated at a single institution. Fifty-eight cases were identified and stratified according to stage of disease at presentation. Four patients (7%) died; three (5%) developed severe neurological sequelae. Poor outcomes were largely confined to cases presenting in an advanced stage and at the extremes of age. Corticosteroids were administered to 56 patients and may have contributed to the comparatively good outcome in these cases. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to measure changes in total body water (TBW) in surgical patients after gastrointestinal lavage. METHODS: In a prospective, controlled study we used bioelectrical impedance to calculate the change in TBW in two groups of general surgical patients in the pre-operative period: the colonic lavage group consisted of patients fasted overnight who received 3 L of gastrointestinal lavage solution (GLS; n = 30), and the control group consisted of patients fasted overnight only (n = 30). Total body water was measured before and after either lavage and fasting (lavage group) or fasting alone (control group). RESULTS: The lavage group had a mean TBW loss of 729 mL +/- s.e. 217 and the control group a mean loss of 84 mL +/- s.e. 93 (P < 0.01 unpaired t-test). CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that GLS results in a net loss of TBW. Although this fluid loss is modest, it may be important in surgical patients who have minimal cardiovascular reserve. 相似文献

The properties of GaAs Schottky barrier diodes as video detectors and mixing elements were investigated in the frequency range from 0.8–2.5 THz. For the most sensitive diode, the video responsivity and system noise temperature were measured as a function of incident laser power. The highest video responsivity was 2,000 V/W at 214μm and 60 V/W at 118μm. For five diodes differing in doping, capacitance, series resistance and anode diameter, the system noise temperature was measured at 214μm and 118μm. The best single sideband (SSB) values are 12,300 K and 24,200 K at 214μm and 118μm, respectively. The system noise temperature versus frequency is given over the range from 0.5–3 THz for two specific diodes demonstrating that the sharpness of the I–V characteristics is only of secondary importance for mixer perfomance at such high frequencies. 相似文献

The quasi-steady state optimization of a single tubular fixed bed reactor with a slowly decaying catalyst is considered. The optimal choice of temperature T(z, t) distributed in both the space of the reactor and in chronological time is sought so as to maximize the total amount of reaction in a fixed given period of time. A single irreversible reaction is considered with a rate expressible as a product of separate functions of temperature, activity and conversion. The rate of catalyst decay is also a product of separate functions of temperature and activity but independent of conversion. Upper and lower bounds are placed on the permitted temperature. Theoretical characterization of the optimal policy is obtained using Sirazetdinov and Degtyarev's maximum principle derived for first-order partial differential equations and the influence of the ratio of reaction activation energy to catalyst deactivation energy on the derived optimal policy is indicated. The white pine cone beetle, Conophthorus coniperda, exhibited dose and enantiospecific responses to -pinene in stands of mature eastern white pine, Pinus strobus, in a seed orchard near Murphy, North Carolina, USA. (–)--Pinene significantly increased catches of cone beetles to traps baited with (± )-trans-pityol. (+)--Pinene did not increase catches of beetles to pityol-baited traps and interrupted the response of beetles to traps baited with (±)-trans-pityol and (–)--pinene. Maximal attraction of cone beetles to pityol-baited traps was obtained with lures releasing (–)--pinene at a rate of 103 mg/day at 23°C. Lures releasing (–)--pinene at rates lower or higher than 103 mg/day resulted in reduced catches to traps baited with (±)-trans-pityol. The sex ratio in all catches was heavily male biased. Attraction of the clerid predator, Thanasimus dubius, to traps baited with (±)-trans-pityol increased significantly with the presence of -pinene, irrespective of enantiomeric composition. Maximal attraction of T. dubius to pityol-baited traps occurred with devices releasing (–)--pinene at the highest rate tested, 579 mg/d at 23°C, a sub optimal rate for cone beetles. 相似文献
