The contributions are made by some of the many who know Rod and have been in uenced by him. The ElectroScan environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) enables wet samples to be observed by eliminating air but allowing water vapour into the sample chamber. However, evaporation from, and condensation on, the sample may occur during the pumpdown sequence used to reach this state, which means that the sample may not be in its natural state when viewed if due care is not taken. In this paper, the pumping system of the ESEM is described mathematically and expressions are derived for the evaporation and condensation. This treatment is then used to calculate the optimum pumpdown sequence. The importance of using the optimized procedure is illustrated by micrographs of fat emulsions.  相似文献

The iron-free heme derivative protoporphyrin-IX, was added to a cooked emulsified beef product to mimic the typical cured-color obtained with nitrite. Although the pigment was stable and could be recovered from the emulsion it imparted a purple hue as noted by visual observation and Hunterlab color values (L,a,b). The possible implications of this pigment as a meat colorant are discussed.  相似文献

In this, the third part of a series of four reviews, the factors -which control the shelf-life of long and intermediate life dairy products are discussed. Two distinct types of product degradation are addressed. Firstly, the degradative potential of heat-resistant lipase, protease and phospholipase, derived from psychrotrophic bacteria commonly found in refrigerated milk, is examined. Secondly, the chemical composition of milk is reviewed and lipid oxidation, calcium induced aggregation of milk protein and Maillard reaction are identified as likely routes to product spoilage. The relative importance of these reactions to specific products will be discussed in the final part of this series of articles.  相似文献

Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) was grown on soil (control) or municipal sewage sludge-treated plots. The cabbage was freeze-dried and analyzed for glucosinolate content and pattern. Results showed that cabbage grown on sludge-amended soil contained only half the glucosinolate content of cabbage grown on the control plot. The pattern of individual glucosinolates present was also altered. The sludge-grown cabbage glucosinolate extract was shown to be mutagenic in the non-activated test system of S. typhimurium TA 100. Extracts of both sludge-grown and control cabbage were shown to enhance the mutagenicity on a dose-response basis of aflatoxin B1, benzo(a)pyrene, and captan.  相似文献

Clark et al ( 1992)reported on the use of a computer simulation model to show that significant reduction in customer ‘ waiting time’ could be achieved by new management policies for multi-station service organizations. They modelled a multi-phase queuing structure and showed reductions in the system variable ‘ time in system’ when servers were pooled at the first reception desk, rather than having single servers at multiple desks to provide service. Their model also demonstrated a greater savings in system transit time when the servers moved with the customers through subsequent tasks (multi-phase systems) This paper uses classical queuing theory to evaluate these results. We conclude that Clark et al' s findings can be supported through use of the classical waiting line formulas.  相似文献

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted to determine whether changes in atmospheric aerosol optical depth would effect changes in bi-directional reflectance distributions of vegetation canopies. Measurements were made of the directionally reflected radiance distributions of two pasture grass canopies (same species, different growth forms) and one soya bean plant canopy under different sky irradiance distributions, which resulted from a variation in aerosol optical depth. The reflected radiance data were analysed in the solar principal plane in two narrow spectral bands, one visible (662 nm) and one infrared (826 nm). The observed changes in reflectance for both wavelengths from irradiance distribution variation is interpreted to be due largely to changes in the percentage of shadowed area viewed by the sensor for the incomplete canopies (pasture grass). For the complete coverage vegetation canopy (soya bean) studied, the effects of specular reflection and the increased diffuse irradiance penetration into the canopy are concluded to be primary physical mechanisms responsible for reflectance changes. Observed reflectivities were found to be lower on a hazy day (higher optical depth with a greater diffuse fraction) than on a clear day, with solar zenith angles at about 58° on both days, for full-coverage soya bean canopies. The reduced reflectance most likely results from a diminished specular reflection and a greater diffuse radiation penetration into the canopy, which effects an increased energy absorption at large solar zenith angles. The opposite was true for fractional coverage grass canopies at solar zenith angles of about 56° since the shadowing was less on the hazy day and, therefore, the soil/litter background was more fully illuminated. In the near-infrared waveband the changes in reflectance are much less than in the visible and, therefore, normalized difference vegetation index values differ substantially under clear and hazy sky conditions for the same vegetation canopy conditions. Thus, the influence of atmospheric optical depth must be considered for accurate remote sensing and in situ data interpretation.  相似文献

The effect of natural convection on forced convection in a horizontal flow was investigated during zinc electrodeposition on a horizontal electrode facing upward in a channel. The previous findings of Tobias and Hickman [1] are confirmed. A secondary flow in the form of roll cells whose axes are parallel to the flow direction is formed at some distance from the leading edge. This distance depends linearly on the flow velocity through the critical Rayleigh number for the onset of natural convection across the diffusion boundary layer. Striated zinc deposits reveal the imprint of the secondary flow on the planar cathode facing upward.  相似文献
