Fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) contains fibers physically mixed with gravel, sand, cement, and water. So far, adequate mechanical performance of FRC has been obtained at high cost and using complex technologies; important here is the geometry and surface characteristics of the polymers. We have modified polymeric‐fiber surfaces by using gamma radiation. Irradiated polypropylene (PP) fibers were submitted to 0, 5, 10, 50, and 100 kGy of gamma irradiation dosages. First, tensile strength of PP fibers was evaluated, and then fibers blended at 0, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0% in volume with Portland cement, gravel, sand, and water. The highest values of compressive strength were obtained with irradiated‐fibers at 10 kGy and 1.5% in volume of fiber. The result is 101 MPa, as compared to 35 MPa for simple concrete without fibers. We conducted a multiyear study in two phases to determine preweaning performance traits of Senepol (S x S), Hereford (H x H), and reciprocal (S x H and H x S) F1 crossbred calves and feedlot performance and carcass characteristics of steers. In Phase I, from 1985 to 1989, data from S x S (n = 194), H x H (n = 383), and S x H (n = 120) calves were used. Numbers of S x S cows were increased during Phase I so that data from H x S (n = 74) calves could be included in Phase II (1990 to 1992) in addition to S x S (n = 118), H x H (n = 130), and S x H (n = 56) calves. Also during Phase II, feedlot performance and carcass characteristics were determined for S x S (n = 30), H x H (n = 26), H x S (n = 36), and S x H (n = 26) steers. In Phase I, S x S calves had heavier (P < .01) birth weights and heavier (P < .01) 205-d adjusted weaning weights than H x H calves. Birth weights of S x H calves were heavier (P < .01) than the mean of the purebred calves, but 205-d adjusted weaning weights did not differ (P > .10). In phase II, direct heterosis was 3.5% for birth weight (P < .05) and 5.1% for 205-d adjusted weaning weight (P < .01). Senepol maternal breed effects were 1.9 kg for birth weight (P < .10) and 37.9 kg for 205-d adjusted weaning weight (P < .01). Levels of direct heterosis, Senepol maternal breed effects, and Hereford direct breed effects were significant for most feedlot performance traits of steer calves that were fed to a common end point. Breeds did not differ (P > .10) for USDA yield and quality grades, and direct heterosis was not significant for Warner-Bratzler shear force. These results demonstrate significant levels of heterosis in preweaning performance between S x S and H x H calves and in feedlot performance of steers. Levels of heterosis were smaller and nonsignificant for most carcass traits including meat tenderness, which did not differ between S x S and H x H steers in this study.  相似文献

Photosynthetic microorganisms are expected to be useful to maintain an oxygenic atmosphere and to provide biomass for astronauts in the International Space Station as well as in future long-term space flights. However, fluxes of complex ionizing radiation of various intensities and energies make space an extreme environment for the microorganisms, affecting their photosynthetic efficiency. To automatically monitor the photosynthetic Photosystem II (PSII) activity of microorganisms under space conditions an optical biosensor, which utilizes chlorophyll fluorescence as biological transduction system, was built; the PSII activity was monitored by the biosensor during balloon flights at stratospheric altitudes of about 40 km. The effect of space stress on quantum yield of PSII varied among the tested species depending on the growth light conditions at which they were exposed during the flights.  相似文献

Fe(II)-tetrakis-N,N,N',N'(2-pyridylmethyl) ethylenediamine (Fe-TPEN) catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide, and blocks the toxic effect of paraquat on Escherichia coli growth and survival. We examined antioxidative effects of Fe-TPEN on lipid peroxidation and t-butyl hydroperoxide induced cell damage. Fe-TPEN inhibited the FeSO4/H2O2 induced lipid peroxidation in the rat liver homogenates with an IC50 value of 30.2 microM, and protected Ac2F cell damage by t-butyl hydroperoxide in a dose-dependent manner (EC50 value is 2.6 microM). Also, hepatoprotective effect of Fe-TPEN (5 mg/kg, i.p.) was investigated using CCl4 induced liver injury in rats. This complex inhibited the elevation of serum alanine aminotransferase (AST) and aspartate aminotransferase (ALT) levels in CCl4 induced liver injuries, and improved submassive necrosis and fatty degeneration of the hepatocytes. Fe-TPEN also prevented the loss of total and nonprotein SH contents, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione-S-transferase activity in cytosol of rat liver. Although the exact mechanism of action is not clear, antioxidative properties as well as attenuation of hepatocellular defense systems by Fe-TPEN seem to be important on its potent hepatoprotective effect in CCl4-intoxicated rat.  相似文献

The health benefits of soy isoflavones have been widely investigated; however, there are some concerns as to whether soy isoflavones, similar to ipriflavone, a synthetic isoflavone, cause lymphocytopenia in postmenopausal women. Hence, the purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which 12-month supplementation of 25 g soy protein containing 60 mg isoflavones alters lymphocyte counts or other hematological parameters in postmenopausal women who were not on hormone replacement therapy.  相似文献

Rubber particles from tires out of use (TOU) were used to modify an epoxy-based thermoset. The effect of size and particle content were evaluated. Three bending point and Charpy tests were carried out to study the mechanical behavior of the materials. A steady decrease in the critical stress intensity factor, KIc, with the content of TOU was observed, being attributed to the fact that the particles might also act as defects in the polymer matrix. Fractographic analysis confirmed that filled specimens showed localized shear yielding at the end of the particles along the crack propagation direction. No signs of cavitation mechanism were found on the surfaces of fracture, evidencing an extraordinary interfacial adhesion. The total energy absorbed at break increased as the size of TOU particles decreased, pointing out that particle size is crucial for the performance of these materials. Matrix yielding and plastic deformation were considered to be the main toughness mechanisms.  相似文献

In the present investigation we characterized the antigenic diversity of the VP4 and VP7 proteins in 309 and 261 human rotavirus strains isolated during two consecutive epidemic seasons, respectively, in three different regions of Mexico. G3 was found to be the prevalent VP7 serotype during the first year, being superseded by serotype G1 strains during the second season. To antigenically characterize the VP4 protein of the strains isolated, we used five neutralizing monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) which showed specificity for VP4 serotypes P1A, P1B, and P2 in earlier studies. Eight different patterns of reactivity with these MAbs were found, and the prevalence of three of these patterns varied from one season to the next. The P genotype of a subset of 52 samples was determined by PCR. Among the strains characterized as genotype P[4] and P[8] there were three and five different VP4 MAb reactivity patterns, respectively, indicating that the diversity of neutralization epitopes in VP4 is greater than that previously appreciated by the genomic typing methods.  相似文献
