Towards Diastereomeric Pure Salts with Antisolvent Methods

Chiral molecules, especially enantiomers and diastereomers of purity > 99 %, present a significant market share within the chemical, pharmaceutical, and flavor industries. Antisolvent precipitations, both batch and semicontinuous operations to serve the current trends in flow chemistry were demonstrated to be environmentally benign and efficient tools in achieving high optical purities. Although salts are known to be insoluble in supercritical CO₂, instabilities of the nascent salts were detected and applied for increasing efficiency. Diastereomeric excess values of the crystalline products exceeded 99 % in maximum of three consecutive steps both by repeated resolution with half molar equivalent of the amine to the acid and by direct recrystallization of the salts.     

Stoichiometric dye-binding procedure for the determination of the reactive lysine content of soya bean protein

A new analytical method has been developed for the determination of the reactive lysine content of soya bean protein. The method is based on the reaction of the free basic groups of the protein with 1-phenylazo-2 naphthol-6,8 disulphonic acid. With regard to the stoichiometry of the procedure, it has been proved, contrary to earlier reports, that the basic amino acids, histidine, arginine and lysine, each combine with one mole of the dye. After acylation with propionic anhydride lysine alone loses its dye reactivity. The usefulness of the proposed method has been demonstrated by the determination of the reactive lysine content of several untreated, heat-treated and acid-treated soya bean samples. The results show that heat damage of about 5% in reactive lysine content can be measured in 1·5 h with good reproducibility.     

Dogs (Canis familiaris) learn their owners via observation in a manipulation task.

Eighty-seven pet dogs (Canis familiaris) were involved in an experiment in which they had to solve a task to obtain a ball. After witnessing a full demonstration by their owner (10 times pushing the handle of the box, which released a ball), most dogs preferred to touch the handle sooner and more frequently in comparison with other parts of the box, and they used the handle to get the ball. In contrast dogs in 3 control groups developed their own respective methods. The lack of emergence of the ball and playing after the demonstration did not affect the learning performance strongly. This suggests that in dogs the outcome of a demonstration plays only a restricted role in the manifestation of social learning. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)     

Modeling study of migration-driven lateral instability in autocatalytic systems

The lateral stability of reaction fronts in simple autocatalytic models with the components carrying various charges is investigated when the system is exposed to an inhomogeneous electric field parallel to the direction of propagation. The enhanced migrational flux of the reactant destabilizes the planar front giving rise to a cellular structure because the electric field strength is greater on the reactant side of the reaction front. The onset of instability depends not only on the charge difference between the reactant and the autocatalyst but also on the variation of specific conductance in the course of the reaction, which results in a difference in electric field strength on the opposite sides of the reaction front.     

Water uptake of water-borne paint resin films as studied by impedance spectroscopy and gravimetry

Impedance spectroscopy and gravimetry were employed to characterize alkyd-acrylate and styrene-acrylate water-borne resin film properties during wetting-through (i.e. during water uptake).     

Upgrading of gas oils: the HDS kinetics of dibenzothiophene and its derivatives in real gas oil

The hydrodesulphurization (HDS) of dibenzothiophene (DBT), 4-methyl dibenzothiophene (4 M-DBT), 4,6-dimethyl dibenzothiophene (4,6 DM-DBT) and 4,6-diethyl dibenzothiophene (4,6 DE-DBT) as real gas oil components on NiMo/Al₂O₃ catalyst was investigated. On the basis of the first order rate constants of HDS of the individual sulphur compounds reactivities of the investigated compounds decreased in the order DBT ≫ 4 M-DBT > 4,6 DE-DBT ≈ 4,6 DM-DBT. Apparent activation energies of HDS of above sulphur compounds increased from 80.0 to 120.5 kJ/mol.     

Degradation of HDPE and LLDPE in closed mixing chamber: a comparison

Summary Degradation of linear high density polyethylene (HDPE) and butyl branched linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) was studied during moulding in a closed mixing chamber. At the beginning of the process the rate of oxidative degradation was found faster for LLDPE than for HDPE but later this relation reversed. The degradation mechanism was the same for both types of polyethylenes but the rate of elementary steps depended on the chemical structure of the polymer chain. The differences were attributed to the structural differences in the original materials and the products formed during degradation.     

Aerodynamic optimization via multi-objective micro-genetic algorithm with range adaptation,knowledge-based reinitialization,crowding and ε-dominance

In this study, an optimization of the airfoil of a sailplane is carried out by a recently developed multi-objective genetic algorithm based on microevolution, containing crowding, range adaptation, knowledge-based reinitialization and ε-dominance. Its efficiency was tested on a set of test problems. The results are encouraging, suggesting that very small populations can be used effectively to solve real-world multi-objective optimization problems in many cases of interest.
