ABSTRACT

In this article, we explore how visitors engage with a science museum exhibit that displays controversial topics. Through a case study methodology, we focus on the Brazilian exhibit Preventing Youth Pregnancy that delves into teen pregnancy, sexual practices, and sexually transmitted diseases. Using the lens of science communication (an emergent field of research) we explore (a) communication patterns established between the exhibit and the public and (b) the dimensions of engagement that visitors experienced. Data were collected through observations and interviews with visitors, field notes, exit comment cards, and interviews with staffers. Our findings revealed the potential of articulating different models of science communication and exposed a visitor experience in which informed decision making, sharing of personal stories, co-production of knowledge, and learning how to care (and act) were at play while negotiating the complexities of the issues raised by the displays.  相似文献

This study was aimed at investigating abnormalities in left ventricular size and function in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus without overt cardiovascular manifestations, in order to detect a very early impairment in myocardial function. Seventeen females and 1 male with systemic lupus erythematosus of 4 to 20 year duration and without clinical evidence of heart disease were studied. Twelve healthy volunteers, matched for age, sex and quatelet index, were utilized as controls. Each patient had a two-dimensional M-mode echocardiographic and Doppler examination. In patients with systemic lupus erythematosus there was an increase in left ventricular ejection fraction (p < 0.001), a slight reduction of end-diastolic volume index and a significant decrease of end-systolic volume index (p < 0.001). In the same patients we also found prolongation of the isovolumic relaxation time (p < 0.02), a clear impairment of diastolic filling parameters. Peak E velocity was lower (p < 0.01), peak A velocity was higher (p < 0.01), with a clear lowering, of the corresponding E/A ratio (p < 0.001) in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.  相似文献

The problem of the development of salt concentration profiles in a solar pond is investigated, the thermodiffusion contribution is also taken into account, using a one-dimensional mathematical model and a finite-difference approach. A novel scheme of heat extraction from the solar pond is presented, along with preliminary two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations.  相似文献

Notch signaling has been identified as a critical regulator of cartilage development and homeostasis. Its pivotal role was established by both several joint specific Notch signaling loss of function mouse models and transient or sustained overexpression. NOTCH1 is the most abundantly expressed NOTCH receptors in normal cartilage and its expression increases in osteoarthritis (OA), when chondrocytes exit from their healthy “maturation arrested state” and resume their natural route of proliferation, hypertrophy, and terminal differentiation. The latter are hallmarks of OA that are easily evaluated in vitro in 2-D or 3-D culture models. The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of NOTCH1 knockdown on proliferation (cell count and Picogreen mediated DNA quantification), cell cycle (flow cytometry), hypertrophy (gene and protein expression of key markers such as RUNX2 and MMP-13), and terminal differentiation (viability measured in 3-D cultures by luminescence assay) of human OA chondrocytes. NOTCH1 silencing of OA chondrocytes yielded a healthier phenotype in both 2-D (reduced proliferation) and 3-D with evidence of decreased hypertrophy (reduced expression of RUNX2 and MMP-13) and terminal differentiation (increased viability). This demonstrates that NOTCH1 is a convenient therapeutic target to attenuate OA progression.  相似文献

In adult healthy cartilage, chondrocytes are in a quiescent phase characterized by a fine balance between anabolic and catabolic activities. In ageing, degenerative joint diseases and traumatic injuries of cartilage, a loss of homeostatic conditions and an up-regulation of catabolic pathways occur. Since cartilage differentiation and maintenance of homeostasis are finely tuned by a complex network of signaling molecules and biophysical factors, shedding light on these mechanisms appears to be extremely relevant for both the identification of pathogenic key factors, as specific therapeutic targets, and the development of biological approaches for cartilage regeneration. This review will focus on the main signaling pathways that can activate cellular and molecular processes, regulating the functional behavior of cartilage in both physiological and pathological conditions. These networks may be relevant in the crosstalk among joint compartments and increased knowledge in this field may lead to the development of more effective strategies for inducing cartilage repair.  相似文献

An evaluation of the potential allergenicity of different tomato ecotypes is reported. Twelve tomato ecotypes were assessed through a proteomic approach, using pools of sera of allergic patients from two different regions (Emilia Romagna in Northern Italy and Campania in Southern Italy), in order to identify the major allergens and evaluate differences in IgE binding properties of the tomato cultivars. Pooled sera of allergic people from Emilia Romagna showed as the main allergen a suberization-associated anionic peroxidase, whereas pooled sera of allergic patients from Campania were mostly reactive to profilin. The two proteins were identified through a proteomic approach based on the use of high-resolution mass spectrometric techniques. Quite interestingly, in some cases, several ecotypes showed a less reactivity toward patients?? sera than other, potentially indicating the possibility to identify ipoallergenic varieties. Anyway, the allergenic pattern response to tomatoes was serum-specific, indicating that the allergenic properties of different tomato ecotypes are defined by the specific proteins to which the patient is sensitized, a strong indication that ipoallergenicity of the different ecotypes is possible, but mostly related to the individual susceptibility.  相似文献

The analysis of the solar power collected at the receiver in solar tower systems requires the use of efficient and accurate numerical codes. This paper presents a new Fortran computer program, CRS4-2 (an acronym for Crs4 Research Software for Central Receiver Solar System SimulationS), for the simulation of the optical performance of a central receiver solar plant. The implemented mathematical algorithm allows for the calculation of cosine, shading and blocking effects for heliostats arbitrarily arranged in the solar field. Special attention has been given to ensure the maximum flexibility concerning the number, dimension, shape, and position of the heliostats. In the present implementation, the solar field can be composed of both square and circular heliostats possibly mixed together, each one of them characterized by the size and height from the ground. The modular design of CRS4-2 allows the extension to heliostats of arbitrary shape with only minor modifications of the code. Shading and blocking effects are computed by a tessellation of the heliostats: therefore, the numerical accuracy depends only on the refinement of the tessellation. The application to actual systems has shown that the approach is stable and general.  相似文献

The design of a beam-down solar power plant represents a very complex problem, being its performance dependent on many interrelated parameters. A systematic analysis of these parameters is proposed in the present study. The effect of the hyperboloid eccentricity on both the sunshape and the size of the heliostats is analyzed. Optimal values of the characteristic parameters of the compound parabolic concentrator are also proposed and on the basis of these considerations, extensive calculations are presented to evaluate yearly solar power collection.  相似文献
