Biodegradable hollow microfibres containing particles loaded with specific active agents can be potentially employed to produce a special kind of substrate for tissue engineering, able to function as a scaffold and at the same time to act as a drug‐releasing system. Biodegradable hollow microfibres based on poly(lactic acid) were produced by a dry–wet spinning procedure. Drug‐loaded microparticles were prepared by a simple oil‐in‐water emulsion and entrapped inside the fibres. The morphology of both fibres and particles was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. The mechanical and thermal properties of the fibres were investigated by tensile tests and differential scanning calorimetry. The choline-containing phosphoglycolipid, MfGL-II, is the major polar lipid of Mycoplasma fermentans PG18. Anti-MfGL-II antisera raised in rabbits using the purified MfGL-II as an immunogen were employed in immunogold electron microscopic and immunofluorescence studies showing that MfGL-II is uniformly distributed and exposed on the cell surface of M. fermentans cells. The specificity of the antibodies was determined by immunostaining of lipid extracts separated by thin layer chromatography. The antibodies recognize lipids specific to M. fermentans but did not cross-react with lipid extracts of M. penetrans, M. capricolum, M. gallisepticum or Acholeplasma laidlawii. As phosphocholine almost completely abolished antibody interaction with MfGL-II in an ELISA assay it is suggested that the anti-MfGL-II repertoire is composed primarily of anti-phosphocholine antibodies. The anti-MfGL-II antisera inhibit the attachment of M. fermentans to Molt-3 lymphocytes suggesting that MfGL-II plays a major role in M. fermentans-host cell interaction. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: A decrease in adaptation to exertion has been observed as age progresses. Although this decline may also be affected by factors such as health conditions and age, physical inactivity related to sedentary behaviour plays a dominant role. METHODS: In order to evaluate the influence of physical activity on cardiovascular response to exertion in the elderly, 4 groups of 22 subjects each were submitted to maximal electrocardiographic exercise test on a cycloergometer (multistage program with 30 Watts x 3 min. steps). All subjects were male. The composition of the groups was as follows: 1) veteran long distance runners (mean age: 71 +/- 5.4); 2) sedentary veterans (mean age: 69.8 +/- 3.9); 3) young long distance runners (mean age: 25.4 +/- 4.3); 4) sedentary young adults (mean age: 25.8 +/- 3.9). The endurance athletes, well fitted to competition, had been practicing sport activity for at least 3 years. RESULTS: Heart rate, arterial systolic and diastolic blood pressure were recorded; mean blood pressure and double product were calculated at baseline and at the climax of the stress test; furthermore, total and maximal watts were recorded. For each of the parameters, Student's t test for non-paired observations were used to evaluate statistical differences amongst the four groups. The most interesting result arises in the comparison between veteran long distance runners and sedentary young adults: between the two groups no statistically significant differences in workload, expressed as total watts (1649.55 +/- 296.32 vs 1650.00 +/- 446.32; p = NS) and maximal watts (175.91 +/- 19.19 vs 173.18 +/- 24.38; p = N.S.), were observed. On the contrary, highly significant differences in both total (p < 0.01) and maximal (p < 0.01) watts were noticed by comparing long distance runners and sedentary subjects of the same age. CONCLUSIONS: These data support the hypothesis that the progressive reduction in physical activity, which is usually observed in aging, is the major determinant of exercise deconditioning in the elderly. 相似文献

An improved inductive transducer is achieved by placing the coil and the majority of the transducer body into a recessed alumina basecoat. Process advantages of a recessed over planar structure includes lower top pole topography, improved pole trim capability, and improved top pole composition uniformity. Coil and photoresist processing in a recessed cavity allows for multiple layers with lower resistance without increasing transducer Permalloy path length. Composting is a solid waste treatment process consisting of the biochemical degradation of organic materials. A controlled microbial aerobic decomposition produces stabilized organic materials to be used as soil conditioners or organic fertilizers. The efficiency of this process is strongly temperature-dependent and the key to successful composting lies in the tracking of an appropriate temperature batch curve based on experience and related to a complex succession of differing microbial activities. Such a complexity is modelled in this paper with a fuzzy structure composed of clustered antecedents, describing the process regimes, and consequent linear models driven by the aeration cycle and in-cycle temperature evolution. This fuzzy model was adapted to the data by cluster training and minimization of a model/data error criterion. At present, mammography is the most effective examination for an early diagnosis of breast cancer. Nevertheless, the detection of cancer signs in mammograms is a difficult procedure owing to the great number of non-pathological structures which are also present in the image. Recent statistics show that in current breast cancer screenings 10%-25% of the tumors are missed by the radiologists. For this reason, a lot of research is currently being done to develop systems for Computer Aided Detection (CADe). Probably, some causes of the false-negative screening examinations are that tumoral masses have varying dimension and irregular shape, their borders are often ill-defined and their contrast is very low, thus making difficult the discrimination from parenchymal structures. Therefore, in a CADe system a preliminary segmentation procedure has to be implemented in order to separate the mass from the background tissue. In this way, various characteristics of the segmented mass can be evaluated and used in a classification step to discriminate benign and malignant cases. In this paper, we describe an effective algorithm for massive lesions segmentation based on a region-growing technique and we provide full details the performance evaluation procedure used in this specific context. 相似文献

Nowadays there is a great number of Web information systems that build a model of the user and adapt their services according
to the needs and preferences maintained by the user model (UM). One of the most challenging issues of this scenario is the
possibility to enable different systems to cooperate in order to exchange the available information about a user. Our aim
is to create rich (and scalable) communication protocols and infrastructures to enable consumers and providers of UM data
to interact. Our solution for dealing with such an issue is to exploit Web standards for interoperability (i.e. Semantic Web
and Web Services) for implementing simple atomic communication, and a dialogue model for implementing enhanced communication
capabilities. In particular, two systems can start a semantics-enhanced Dialogue Game as a form of negotiation to clarify
the meaning of the requested concepts when a shared knowledge model does not exist, and to approximate the response when the
exact one is not available. We propose a distributed semantic conversation framework based on the Sesame semantic environment
for the exchange of user model knowledge on the Web. Systems have to expose their user model data as a Web Service, and to
exploit a public dialogue knowledge base to start the dialogue. The main advantage of the approach is to allow systems to
deal with difficult situations by starting an appropriate dialogue game instead of stopping the communication as in the traditional
“all-or-nothing” Web Service approach. On the basis of a preliminary evaluation, the approach has shown an improvement of

In this work we present Bio-PEPA, a process algebra for the modelling and the analysis of biochemical networks. It is a modification of PEPA, originally defined for the performance analysis of computer systems, in order to handle some features of biological models, such as stoichiometry and the use of general kinetic laws. Bio-PEPA may be seen as an intermediate, formal, compositional representation of biological systems, on which different kinds of analyses can be carried out. Bio-PEPA is enriched with some notions of equivalence. Specifically, the isomorphism and strong bisimulation for PEPA have been considered and extended to our language. Finally, we show the translation of a biological model into the new language and we report some analysis results. 相似文献

In this paper we present the experience of the ATLAS and CMS High-Energy Physics (HEP) experiments at the Large Hadron Collider
(LHC) with the LCG/EGEE Grid infrastructure. The activity developed around the following two main lines: large-scale physics
and detector simulations and end-user analysis. The LCG/EGEE Grid infrastructure offers a large amount of computing and storage
resources and is growing very rapidly. It provides the natural environment for large-scale physics and detector simulations.
Also, the analysis of these detector simulation data (and in the near future of the reconstructed data from physics collisions)
requires efficient end-users access to Grid resources. In this paper, the main findings and lessons learned in terms of performance,
robustness and scalability of the whole system are discussed in detail. 相似文献
