Okra fruits and baobab leaves are just two examples of foods used to give a mucilaginous quality to West African food dishes. The mucilages were extracted from both foods and purified. Preliminary studies have been conducted to characterise the mucilages chemically, as well as study their viscous behaviour in relation to their use in West African dishes. Both mucilages are acidic polysaccharides with associated protein and minerals. Neither the quantity of protein nor minerals were significantly reduced during purification. The protein was not separated from the polysaccharide by either gel chromatography or disc electrophoresis. Hydrolysis of okra mucilage revealed that the polysaccharide was composed of galacturonic acid, galactose, rhamnose and glucose (1.3:1.0:0.1:0.1). Baobab mucilage on hydrolysis was found to contain mainly galacturonic and glucuronic acids with minor quantities of galactose, rhamnose, glucose and arabinose (11.7:11.3:1.0:0.6:0.4:0.1). The mucilages form viscous solutions at low concentrations (5–10 g/litre). They attain maximum viscosity in the neutral pH range. However, the mucilage solutions are not stable to heat and lose much of their viscosity when heated.  相似文献

Mesothelin (MSLN), a glycoprotein normally expressed by mesothelial cells, is overexpressed in ovarian cancer (OvCa) suggesting a role in tumor progression, although the biological function is not fully understood. OvCa has a high mortality rate due to diagnosis at advanced stage disease with intraperitoneal metastasis. Tumor cells detach from the primary tumor as single cells or multicellular aggregates (MCAs) and attach to the mesothelium of organs within the peritoneal cavity producing widely disseminated secondary lesions. To investigate the role of host MSLN in the peritoneal cavity we used a mouse model with a null mutation in the MSLN gene (MSLNKO). The deletion of host MSLN expression modified the peritoneal ultrastructure resulting in abnormal mesothelial cell surface architecture and altered omental collagen fibril organization. Co-culture of murine OvCa cells with primary mesothelial cells regardless of MSLN expression formed compact MCAs. However, co-culture with MSLNKO mesothelial cells resulted in smaller MCAs. An allograft tumor study, using wild-type mice (MSLNWT) or MSLNKO mice injected intraperitoneally with murine OvCa cells demonstrated a significant decrease in peritoneal metastatic tumor burden in MSLNKO mice compared to MSLNWT mice. Together, these data support a role for host MSLN in the progression of OvCa metastasis.  相似文献

Three bivalves: Anadara (Senilia) senilis (n=220), Crassostrea tulipa (n=260) from two 'open' lagoons (Benya and Ningo) and a 'closed' lagoon (Sakumo), and Perna perna (n=170) from rocky shores adjacent to Benya and Sakumo, were analyzed for their total and organic Hg concentrations and total body burden. Median concentrations for cockles were 0.20 micro/gdw for the wet season and 0.36 microg/gdw for the dry season. Total mercury concentration for both mussels and oysters ranged from 0.04 to 0.84 microg/gdw. Seasonal variations and age effect were detected in all the species but no significant spatial variation was found along the coast. Organic (methyl) mercury concentration ranged from 0.03 to 0.55 microg/gdw was stable without age effect. The median relative organic mercury varied between 30 and 80% depending on the season, location, species and the type of lagoon. The lower concentrations in the wet season were due to primary production and dilution effect. Log-transformed regression relationships between body burden and size were used to compare the species.  相似文献

Samples of the bivalve Anadara (Senilia) senilis collected from a closed lagoon (Sakumo) and two open lagoons in Ghana (Benya and Ningo; n = 550), and the Bonny river estuary in Nigeria (n = 620), were analyzed for their total and organic mercury content. Total mercury concentration showed significant spatial differences, with median values of 0.1 microgram/g dry wt. in the closed lagoon, 0.2 in the estuary and 0.3 in the open lagoons. Concentration tended to be higher during the dry season in the lagoons, but lower in the estuary. The median relative organic concentration varied between 20 and 60% methyl Hg, depending on location and season. Age effects were detected in the lagoons, total Hg concentration decreasing with length.  相似文献

Growing evidence suggest that Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most common cause of dementia among the elderly is a metabolic disorder associated with impaired brain insulin signaling. Hence, the diabetic drug can be a therapeutic option for the management AD. The researches in this area are ongoing and Pioglitazone (PIO) is one of the most investigated diabetic drug in AD. Eventhough PIO treatment was found to improve AD significantly in the preclinical models, the poor blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability and serious peripheral side effects limited its success in the clinical trials. The objective of the present study was to formulate and optimize intranasal (IN) nano lipid carriers (NLC) of PIO for its targeted delivery to the brain. A Box-Behnken design was employed to optimize the effect of three independent variables on two dependent variables. The optimized formulation had a particle size (PS) of 211.4?±?3.54?nm and zeta potential of (ZP) of 14.9?±?1.09?mv. The polydispersibility index (PDI) and entrapment efficiency (EE) was found to be 0.257?±?0.108 and 70.18?±?4.5% respectively. Storage stability studies performed has confirmed the stability of NLCs at 4?°C and 25?°C. The in-vitro drug release study has exhibited a sustained release of drug from the NLC. The formulation was observed to improve the nasal permeability of PIO ex-vivo significantly. Toxicity studies were performed to confirm the safety of formulation for the in-vivo administration. In-vivo biodistribution study in rats has shown a direct transport of drug from the nose to brain from the IN-NLC.  相似文献

Hydrogen direct injection (HDI) in cylinder is considered as an effective method to improve natural gas engine performance. The present study aims to bridge the gap on the HDI in rotary engine, and to investigate the effect of hydrogen injection timing (IT) and hydrogen injection duration (ID) on mixture formation and combustion process of a hydrogen direct injection plus natural gas port injection (HDI + NGPI) rotary engine. Numerical approach was used in this study for obtaining some critical information, which was difficult to obtain through experiment, such as flow field, fuel distribution and some intermediate concentration fields in cylinder. The research results showed that for mixture formation, the distribution law of the hydrogen and the natural gas at the late stages of the compression stroke (100°CA (BTDC)), was as follows: at a fixed ID of 24°CA, with retarded hydrogen IT, the stratification phenomenon of hydrogen became obvious increasingly, and the hydrogen distribution area moved towards the back of the combustion chamber continuously. At a fixed IT of 210°CA (BTDC), with the extension in ID, the accumulation area of hydrogen reduced significantly, and the hydrogen continued to gather in the middle of the combustion chamber. For combustion process, the overall combustion rate for the hydrogen injection strategy which had an IT of 210°CA (BTDC) and ID of 40°CA (case ID5), was the fastest. This was due to the fact that compared with the leading spark plug (LSP), the combustion condition around the trailing spark plug (TSP) has a great influence on the combustion process. For case ID5 at ignition timing, the hydrogen concentration near the TSP is high enough for the rapid formation of flame kernel. Compared with case IT1 which had an IT of 390°CA (BTDC) and an ID of 24°CA, the improved combustion rate of case ID5 had a 11.7% increase in peak pressure, and a 7% decrease in NO emissions.  相似文献

The catalytic reaction characteristics of the hydrogen and oxygen mixture in the catalytic micro-combustor were detected by thermocouple, infrared thermal imager and OH-PLIF. The equivalence ratio of transition stage from coupling reaction (coupled homogeneous-heterogeneous combustion) to pure catalytic reaction (heterogeneous combustion) was obtained. The three-dimensional pure catalytic reaction model with detailed catalytic reaction mechanism was established in a rectangular catalytic micro-combustor. The simulation model was validated with experimental data. The effects of the intermediate and final products from gas-phase reactions on the pure catalytic reaction were discussed as well as the effects of gas-phase reactions on the catalytic reaction in the process of coupling reactions were studied. The intermediate product OH radical can improve the hydrogen conversion of the surface reaction, and the effect of O radical is not obvious. The final product H2O has an inhibitory effect on the surface reaction. Since the mass fraction of H2O is much higher than other gas-phase reaction products, the dominant effect of the gas-phase reaction on the catalytic reaction is suppression. In the coupling reactions, the fuel consumed by the gas-phase reaction weakened the catalytic reaction.  相似文献

Background

Despite findings that contact lens wear for vision correction provides better quality of life than spectacles, contact lens use in developing countries is low. This study evaluated knowledge, usage and barriers associated with contact lens wear among spectacle wearers in Cape Coast, Ghana.

Method

A cross-sectional survey using a structured questionnaire was conducted on an adult population of spectacle wearers to assess their knowledge of contact lens wear for vision correction. The participants were proportionately sampled from three eye clinics in the Cape Coast Metropolis, Ghana. Questionnaires were either self-administered or completed with the help of a research assistant.

Results

Of the 422 participants, only 147 (34.8%) knew of contact lens wear for vision correction. The proportion of spectacle wearers reporting history of contact lens wear was 14 (3.3%). Barriers to contact lens wear reported were satisfaction with vision through spectacles 102 (25.0%), lack of adequate information 111 (27.2%), fear of side effects 94 (23.0%) and cost 78 (19.1%). The younger adults and those with higher number of changes of spectacles were more likely to know of contact lenses.

Conclusion

Knowledge and usage of contact lenses among spectacle wearers was low. Contact lens education and demonstration of visual performance through fitting of trial contact lenses on potential candidates may help overcome barriers to contact lens wear.  相似文献

The bivalves, Anadara (Senilia) senilis (n=95), Crassostrea tulipa (n=75) and Perna perna (n=30) from Ghana, were analyzed for their organochlorines (pesticides and PCBs) concentrations and the body burden. A comparison was done based on two different standard PCB mixtures (Aroclor 1254 and 1260) with the percentage individual congener contribution and that of the sample. From these comparisons, it appeared that the pattern of PCB residues in the samples was neither Aroclor 1254 nor 1260. On the other hand, there was seasonal qualitative difference in the pattern that is purely marine (in the dry season) versus terrestrial input (in the wet season). SigmaPCB was 0.10 microg/g dw or 2.2 microg/g lw (median values). There was no correlation between PCB concentration and lipid content reflecting the importance of indirect contamination of the bivalves. The pesticides, aldrin, dieldrin, endrin, lindane, DDTs, HCH, HCB, endosulfan, heptachlor epoxide and heptachlor, were detected. The most abundant pesticides were the SigmaDDT: 73 and SigmaHCH: 29 ng/g dw. DDT/DDE and hept./heptachlor epoxide ratios reflect their recent applications, while the ratio for aldrin/dieldrin suggests that the use of aldrin has been discontinued, at least on the coast of Ghana.  相似文献
