Cluster introduces a new generation of spacecraft that will measure the spatial gradients of the magnetic field in the Earth's magnetosphere. As gradients require knowledge of differences, small errors resulting from an inadequate knowledge of the orientations, zero levels and the scale factors of the magnetometer sensors affect the calculation of field gradients disproportionately and must be removed with high accuracy. We show that twelve calibration parameters are required for each of the spacecraft (for a total of 48 for the four spacecraft) to correctly infer the measured magnetic fields at each of the spacecraft. By application of a Fourier transform technique, some of the parameters can be recovered. We show that errors in eight of the twelve calibration parameters generate coherent monochromatic signals at the first and the second harmonics of the spin frequency in the despun data. We relate the real and the imaginary parts of the monochromatic signals to the eight calibration parameters. We then present a least squares scheme that improves the eight calibration parameters by iteration until the power of the coherent signal superimposed above the broad-band background is minimized 相似文献

The folding of the small protein barstar, which is the intracellular inhibitor to barnase in Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, has been studied by equilibrium unfolding methods. Barstar is shown to exist in two conformations: the A form, which exists at pH values lower than 4, and the N state, which exists at pH values above 5. The transition between the A form and the N state is completely reversible. UV absorbance spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and circular dichroism spectroscopy were used to study the two conformations. The mean residue ellipticity measured at 220 nm of the A form is 60% that of the N state, and the A form has some of the properties expected for a molten globule conformation. Fluorescence energy transfer experiments using 1-anilino-8-naphthalenesulfonate indicate that at least one of the three tryptophan residues in the A form is accessible to water. Surprisingly, high concentrations of denaturant are required to unfold the A form. For denaturation by guanidine hydrochloride, the midpoint of the cooperative unfolding transition measured by circular dichroism for the A form at pH 3 is 3.7 +/- 0.1 M, which is significantly higher than the value of 2.0 +/- 0.1 M observed for the N state at pH 7. The unfolding of the A form by guanidine hydrochloride or urea is complex and cannot be satisfactorily fit to a two-state (A<==>U) model for unfolding. Fluorescence-monitored tertiary structure melts before circular dichroism-monitored secondary structure, and an equilibrium unfolding intermediate must be present on the unfolding pathway of A. 相似文献

The Galileo spacecraft has been orbiting Jupiter since 7 December 1995, and encounters one of the four galilean satellites-Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto-on each orbit. Initial results from the spacecraft's magnetometer have indicated that neither Europa nor Callisto have an appreciable internal magnetic field, in contrast to Ganymede and possibly Io. Here we report perturbations of the external magnetic fields (associated with Jupiter's inner magnetosphere) in the vicinity of both Europa and Callisto. We interpret these perturbations as arising from induced magnetic fields, generated by the moons in response to the periodically varying plasma environment. Electromagnetic induction requires eddy currents to flow within the moons, and our calculations show that the most probable explanation is that there are layers of significant electrical conductivity just beneath the surfaces of both moons. We argue that these conducting layers may best be explained by the presence of salty liquid-water oceans, for which there is already indirect geological evidence in the case of Europa. 相似文献

A possible application of AgInTe2 for optoelectronic switching is reported. Alternating and direct current (a.c. and d.c.) response of the material has been studied over a wide frequency range (5 Hz to 1 MHz) through measurements of conductance, capacitance and photocurrent at different temperature and illumination levels. The switching/recovery time has been analysed in terms of time constant and found to be of the order of microseconds for this material. Higher frequencies of operation (>40 kHz) are preferable because, at such frequencies, becomes almost independent of illumination level and temperature. Furthermore, the switching speed can be conveniently controlled with d.c. bias applied across the sample. Elliott's CBH model has been satisfactorily used to explain the switching behaviour for AgInTe2. 相似文献

Cartilage lesions are difficult to repair due to low vascular distribution and may progress into osteoarthritis. Despite numerous attempts in the past, there is no proven method to regenerate hyaline cartilage. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ability to use a 3D printed biomatrix to repair a critical size femoral chondral defect using a canine weight-bearing model. The biomatrix was comprised of human costal-derived cartilage powder, micronized adipose tissue, and fibrin glue. Bilateral femoral condyle defects were treated on 12 mature beagles staged 12 weeks apart. Four groups, one control and three experimental, were used. Animals were euthanized at 32 weeks to collect samples. Significant differences between control and experimental groups were found in both regeneration pattern and tissue composition. In results, we observed that the experimental group with the treatment with cartilage powder and adipose tissue alleviated the inflammatory response. Moreover, it was found that the MOCART score was higher, and cartilage repair was more organized than in the other groups, suggesting that a combination of cartilage powder and adipose tissue has the potential to repair cartilage with a similarity to normal cartilage. Microscopically, there was a well-defined cartilage-like structure in which the mid junction below the surface layer was surrounded by a matrix composed of collagen type I, II, and proteoglycans. MRI examination revealed significant reduction of the inflammation level and progression of a cartilage-like growth in the experimental group. Oxidative damage is considered to be the primary cause of several aging associated disease pathologies. Cumulative oxidative damage tends to be pervasive among cellular macromolecules, impacting proteins, lipids, RNA and DNA of cells. At a systemic level, events subsequent to oxidative damage induce an inflammatory response to sites of oxidative damage, often contributing to additional oxidative stress. At a cellular level, oxidative damage to mitochondria results in acidification of the cytoplasm and release of cytochrome c, causing apoptosis. This review summarizes findings in the literature on oxidative stress and consequent damage on cells and tissues of the cardiovascular system and the central nervous system, with a focus on aging-related diseases that have well-documented evidence of oxidative damage in initiation and/or progression of the disease. The current understanding of the cellular mechanisms with a focus on macromolecular damage, impacted cellular pathways and gross morphological changes associated with oxidative damage is also reviewed. Additionally, the impact of calorific restriction with its profound impact on cardiovascular and neuronal aging is addressed. 相似文献
