Intergenerational Family Conflict and Coping Among Hmong American College Students.

Problem solving and social support, as different styles of coping with intergenerational family conflict, were examined among 86 Hmong American college students. Problem solving and social support were hypothesized to differentially moderate the effects of family conflict on psychological adjustment. Furthermore, the effects of attributions of blame on the adjustment of Hmong American college students were examined. Results indicate that social support buffered and problem solving enhanced the negative effects of family conflict on symptoms of distress but not on affect. Additionally, there were significant interaction effects between family conflict and self-blame on distress. Specifically, students who were more likely to blame themselves reported higher levels of distress. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)     

Identification of Piecewise Linear Parameters of Regression Models of Non-Stationary Deterministic Systems

We consider the problem of identifying unknown nonstationary piecewise linear parameters for a linear regression model. A new algorithm is proposed that allows, in the case of a number of assumptions on the elements of the regressor, to provide an estimate of unknown non-stationary parameters. We analyze in detail the case with two unknown parameters, which makes it possible to understand the main idea of the proposed approach. We also consider a generalization to the case of an arbitrary number of parameters. We give an example of computer simulation that illustrates the efficiency of the proposed approach.     

Engaging High‐Sensation Seekers: The Dynamic Interplay of Sensation Seeking,Message Visual‐Auditory Complexity and Arousing Content

This study extends the research on message‐sensation value (MSV) by treating it as a dynamic stream of complex visual‐auditory information and arousing content (MSV‐d). Real‐time attentional and emotional responses to this dynamic stream during the PSA viewing process are indicated by psychophysiological measures. Dynamic models are used to systematically examine endogenous and exogenous influences on message processing to more accurately understand the effects of MSV‐d variables and individuals' sensation seeking tendencies during the processing of the PSAs. An important finding is that generally, increasing visual‐auditory complexity activates an approach tendency in those with high sensation‐seeking tendencies but activates an avoidance tendency in those with low sensation‐seeking tendencies, and this response pattern is moderated by arousing content.

Cultural Clusters, Global-Local Linkages and Spillovers: Theoretical and Empirical Insights from an Exploratory Study of Toronto's Film Cluster

This paper discusses the importance of global-local linkages for the development of indigenous production in cultural clusters by analyzing the interplay between the indigenous film production cluster in Toronto, Canada, and Hollywood's runaway productions. Global-local linkages are at the forefront of the current debate in cluster studies, the discussion has so far had only a limited impact on the research on cultural clusters. The paper identifies the limitations to the dominant cluster models to explain the difficulties for Toronto to develop its indigenous cultural cluster. The inclusion of the global linkages in the analysis of the Toronto film cluster provides a new insight into the current development potentials and barriers faced by the indigenous film industry.     

Measurement of IP3 in p-i-n photodetectors and proposed performancerequirements for RF fiber-optic links

The nonlinearities generated by wide-band, high-current photodetectors are discussed in the context of the performance of an externally modulated analog radio-frequency fiber-optic link. The quantitative impart of the detector's third-order intermodulation product intercept (IP3) on the link's spur-free dynamic range is analyzed. Waveguide p-i-n photodiodes were developed to specifically address these stringent IP3 goals. The IP3 was measured using a four laser heterodyne system resulting in an IP3 of 27 dBm measured at a center frequency of 20 GHz with 20 mA of de photocurrent. The authors believe that this is the highest photodetector IP3 reported to date at these operating conditions     

Housing supply and residential segregation in Ireland

The article examines the role of housing supply in ethnic diversity and the residential segregation of Asian, African and eastern European immigrants from Irish nationals in Ireland. Housing supply is defined as the proportions of new housing, private rental accommodation and social housing among all housing units in an electoral district. Multivariate regressions reveal that, among all three housing supply variables, the proportion of private rentals had the largest effect on ethnic diversity and immigrant— Irish segregation. Areas with higher proportions of private rental units were more ethnically diverse, had greater presences of Africans, Asians and eastern Europeans (as opposed to high concentrations of Irish nationals) and exhibited greater integration between each of the three immigrant groups and Irish nationals. The article concludes with a discussion of immigrant assimilation and questions whether the patterns of residential integration observed would further facilitate other forms of social inclusion for immigrants in Irish society.

High-power single-mode simplified antiresonant reflecting opticalwaveguide (S-ARROW) distributed feedback semiconductor lasers

Simplified antiresonant-reflective-optical-waveguide distributed-feedback semiconductor lasers based on Al-free InGaAs-InGaAsP-InGaP materials are reported for the first time. Devices with 6.5-μm-wide emitting apertures operate single-frequency (λ=0.968 μm) and single-spatial-mode to 157-mW continuous-wave output power. The full-width at half-maximum of the lateral far-field pattern is 4.5°, in excellent agreement with theory. Relative intensity noise values as low as -154 dB/Hz are measured between 500 MHz and 8 GHz     

Progress in the Molecular Beam Epitaxy of HgCdTe on Large-Area Si and CdZnTe Substrates

This paper presents the progress in the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth of HgCdTe on large-area Si and CdZnTe substrates at Raytheon Vision Systems. We report a very high-quality HgCdTe growth, for the first time, on an 8 cm × 8 cm CdZnTe substrate. This paper also describes the excellent HgCdTe growth repeatability on multiple 7 cm × 7 cm CdZnTe substrates. In order to study the percentage wafer area yield and its consistency from run to run, small lots of dual-band long-wave infrared/long-wave infrared triple-layer heterojunction (TLHJ) layers on 5 cm × 5 cm CdZnTe substrates and single-color double-layer heterojunction (DLHJ) layers on 6-inch Si substrates were grown and tested for cutoff wavelength uniformity and micro- and macrovoid defect density and uniformity. The results show that the entire lot of 12 DLHJ-HgCdTe layers on 6-inch Si wafers meet the testing criterion of cutoff wavelength within the range 4.76 ± 0.1 μm at 130 K and micro- and macrovoid defect density of ≤50 cm⁻² and 5 cm⁻², respectively. Likewise, five out of six dual-band TLHJ-HgCdTe layers on 5 cm × 5 cm CdZnTe substrates meet the testing criterion of cutoff wavelength within the range 6.3 ± 0.1 μm at 300 K and micro- and macrovoid defect density of ≤2000 cm⁻² and 500 cm⁻², respectively, on the entire wafer area. Overall we have found that scaling our HgCdTe MBE process to a 10-inch MBE system has provided significant benefits in terms of both wafer uniformity and quality.
