A technological milestone for experiments employing transition edge sensor bolometers operating at sub-Kelvin temperature is the deployment of detector arrays with 100s-1000s of bolometers. One key technology for such arrays is readout multiplexing: the ability to read out many sensors simultaneously on the same set of wires. This paper describes a frequency-domain multiplexed readout system which has been developed for and deployed on the APEX-SZ and South Pole Telescope millimeter wavelength receivers. In this system, the detector array is divided into modules of seven detectors, and each bolometer within the module is biased with a unique ~MHz sinusoidal carrier such that the individual bolometer signals are well separated in frequency space. The currents from all bolometers in a module are summed together and pre-amplified with superconducting quantum interference devices operating at 4 K. Room temperature electronics demodulate the carriers to recover the bolometer signals, which are digitized separately and stored to disk. This readout system contributes little noise relative to the detectors themselves, is remarkably insensitive to unwanted microphonic excitations, and provides a technology pathway to multiplexing larger numbers of sensors.  相似文献

Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) compensation has been a matter of investigation of several papers in literature. The proposed solutions belong basically to two large families: electronic compensators and optical compensators. Both PMD compensator schemes have advantages and disadvantages: electronic PMD compensators are usually simple to include in line-terminal, potentially low-cost, very fast, and FEC compatible but their development is strongly dependent on IC technology capability that at this time allows device developments up to the 10 Gbit/s bit rates area. Furthermore, they are strongly dependent on modulation formats, and they can operate only on a single channel. Conversely, optical compensators are independent of bit rate and modulation format and potentially they can compensate more channels simultaneously; their major drawbacks are the longer response time and the complexity in the feedback signal process within the control algorithm. In this paper we consider an optical Polarization Mode Dispersion Compensator (PMDC) that is simple to realize and easy to include at limited costs in each EDFA module (distributed compensation) as well as a single-stage front-end compensator. Numerical analysis of the PMDC and experimental results confirm the utility of the PMDC proposed and its capability in compensating DGD larger than 20 ps in NRZ and RZ 40 Gbit/s optical systems.  相似文献

Wildfire burnt forest biomass can be salvaged as feedstock for bioenergy power generating stations. Despite availability of such forest biomass in northwestern Ontario, its procurement has generally been considered uneconomic and no studies have looked into the cost of harvesting, processing, and transporting the burnt material for bioenergy production. In order to meet the demand of biomass for proposed and existing power generating stations using renewable fuels, a standard costing model is used to determine the feasibility of procuring biomass from burnt areas using a full-tree to roadside, roadside grinder to mill system. The case-study was conducted at the Hogarth Plantations near Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. The total cost incurred for processing and delivery of biomass from wildfire burnt area with a hauling distance of 7 km and total trip cycle time of 2.55 h was found to be $29.65 gt?1, with net energy content of 11.4 GJ gt?1. The total procurement cost depends on the hauling distance and a linear relationship between the two was established. The energy analysis found a net energy output to input ratio of 35:1 for the operation.  相似文献

Thirty-four multiparous and primiparous Holstein cows were utilized to examine the association between the response to long-term administration of recombinant bovine somatotropin and the cow's phenotypic and genetic production potential. Cows representing a range of phenotypic and genetic production potentials were assigned to one of four treatment groups: 0, 12.5, 25.0, or 50.0 mg recombinant bovine somatotropin daily. They were injected daily for 266 d beginning on d 24 to 35 postpartum. Pretreatment milk and fat yields were used to predict daily yields over the lactation and allowed treatment groups to serve as their own controls. Actual minus predicted yield estimated the response to treatment for milk, fat, and FCM for each cow. Milk composition (fat, protein, and lactose percentage) was not significantly affected by treatment. Response in yield for milk, fat, and FCM was significant during the treatment period (266 d). Milk yield increased by 18.5, 19.9, and 21.4%; fat yield increased by 13.4, 20.3, and 18.1%; and FCM increased by 16.3%, 19.7%, and 21.1% after receipt of 12.5, 25.0 and 50.0 mg recombinant bovine somatotropin, respectively. Differences in response were not significant. The dramatic effect recombinant bovine somatotropin has on production requires that alternative approaches be adopted in the future for accurate genetic evaluation of sires and dams if somatotropin is discriminantly used in the national herd.  相似文献

This perceived threat is usually portrayed by the media as being the work of a hacker however little is known about hacker subgroups, their rationale and ethical views. We have investigated the regulatory role of nitric oxide (NO) in corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) release from the human perfused placental lobule in vitro. The effects of the NO donor sodium nitroprusside, the NO synthase inhibitor N omega-nitro-L-arginine, and the NO substrate L-arginine on human (h) placental CRH secretion have been studied. Single lobules of term placentae were bilaterally perfused with Krebs solution (5 mL/min; 95% O2-5% CO2; 37 C; pH 7.3). Fetal and maternal perfusates were collected at 4 C every 30 min for 3 h. CRH immunoreactivity (CRH-IR) in perfusates was measured by RIA using the 41-residue synthetic CRH as standard, 125I-labeled Tyr-hCRH as tracer, and a rabbit anti-CRH antibody Y2BO. The sensitivity of the assay was 0.13 pmol/L. Under basal conditions, human perfused placentae in vitro continuously secreted CRH-IR, which diluted in parallel to a synthetic hCRH-(1-41) standard curve. Size-exclusion chromatography of placental perfusates using a Sephadex G-50 column indicated that placental CRH-IR predominately coeluted with hCRH-(1-41) standard. Basal maternal perfusate CRH-IR levels (27 +/- 4 pmol/L) released from perfused placental lobules were nearly 10-fold greater than fetal perfusate CRH-IR levels (3.4 +/- 0.7 pmol/L; P < 0.05). Infusion of sodium nitroprusside (30-100 mumol/L) into the maternal and fetal placental circulations inhibited CRH-IR release into maternal perfusate in a concentration-dependent manner, but did not inhibit CRH-IR release into the fetal perfusate. N omega-nitro-L-arginine (100 mumol/L) increased placental CRH-IR secretion into fetal perfusate, and this effect was reversed by the infusion of L-arginine (100 mumol/L), which also reduced release below basal levels. In contrast, maternal perfusate CRH-IR levels were not affected by N omega-nitro-L-arginine or L-arginine. These results indicate that the human perfused placenta in vitro releases a substance of similar mol wt and hCRH-IR. Moreover, modulators of the NO signaling pathway differentially affect placental secretion of CRH-IR into the maternal and fetal perfusates. These data are consistent with the involvement of NO in the regulation of placental CRH release during pregnancy.  相似文献

Staphylococcus epidermidis colonises a wide range of implanted prosthetic devices, but rarely contact lenses -- despite a similarity in material composition. A conceivable explanation for this anomaly is the action of the tear defences, including the constitutive proteins lactoferrin and lysozyme. Therefore this study investigated the effect of lactoferrin, lysozyme and serum on the growth of S. epidermidis isolates in artificial tear fluid. Whether supplemented with serum alone or serum with either apolactoferrin or lysozyme, this medium induced a similar, strain-variable effect. However, simultaneous addition of these proteins induced a greater bactericidal or bacteristatic effect. Of those strains killed by the concerted action of apolactoferrin and lysozyme, the absence of serum led to a further increase in the bactericidal effect, whereas strains displaying bacteriostasis were unaffected by serum. Iron saturation of lactoferrin reversed the antimicrobial synergy of apolactoferrin and lysozyme. These results show synergy between lactoferrin and lysozyme which is dependent on the iron limitation of lactoferrin. As a bactericidal mechanism, this synergy is augmented by serum, but bacteriostasis remains unaffected by serum supplemention. Thus, the combination of lysozyme and lactoferrin may partly explain the low level of contact lens colonisation by S. epidermidis in vivo.  相似文献
