Financial strain, received support, anticipated support, and depressive symptoms in the People's Republic of China.

The purpose of this study is to examine the interface between financial strain, informal received economic support, informal anticipated financial support, and psychological distress in later life. Data provided by a large probability sample of older adults in the People's Republic of China reveal that the relationship between financial difficulty and psychological distress is stronger for older adults who receive more economic assistance. However, the results involving anticipated support are in the opposite direction. More specifically, the association between financial problems and psychological distress is lower for older adults who believe that others stand ready to help in the future should the need arise. Business climate attitudes and company relocation decisions.

A total of 438 manufacturing firms reported their business relocation activity, their overall attitude toward the business climate in Michigan, and their assessment of 34 business climate dimensions. Using a lens model paradigm, we explored reasons for a lack of relation between actual relocation decisions and overall business climate attitudes. Location decisions were most highly correlated with distance and labor considerations, whereas overall business climate was most highly correlated with tax considerations, and secondarily correlated with labor problems. Synthesis of N,N-diethyl-N-{4-[(E)-(4-nitrophenyl)diazenyl]phenyl}amine via in situ diazotisation and coupling in supercritical carbon dioxide

The synthesis of azo dyes via a conventional aqueous-based diazotisation and coupling reaction requires the use of relatively high concentrations of mineral acids, which leads to high electrolyte concentrations in wastewater. Reported in this paper is an environmentally benign one-pot method for the synthesis of a nonionic azo dye, N,N -diethyl- N -{4-[( E )-(4-nitrophenyl)diazenyl]phenyl}amine, in supercritical carbon dioxide without using a mineral acid. The product yield increased significantly with temperature, with 91% theoretical yield afforded at 80 °C. The pressure of the system had little influence on product yield.     

Impact of Elaboration on Socially Desirable Responding and the Validity of Biodata Measures.

The current study investigated the impact of requiring respondents to elaborate on their answers to a biodata measure on mean scores, the validity of the biodata item composites, subgroup mean differences, and correlations with social desirability. Results of this study indicate that elaborated responses result in scores that are much lower than nonelaborated responses to the same items by an independent sample. Despite the lower mean score on elaborated items, it does not appear that elaboration affects the size of the correlation between social desirability and responses to biodata items or that it affects criterion-related validity or subgroup mean differences in a practically significant way. Near Shannon limit performance of low density parity check codes

The authors report the empirical performance of Gallager's low density parity check codes on Gaussian channels. They show that performance substantially better than that of standard convolutional and concatenated codes can be achieved; indeed the performance is almost as close to the Shannon limit as that of turbo codes

An exercise design approach to understanding assessment center dimension and exercise constructs.

Arobust finding in assessment center research is that ratings cluster according to exercises and not dimensions. Seeking further understanding of exercise effects, the authors proposed 2 exercise-based factors (exercise form and exercise content) as sources of variance in assessment center ratings. Exercise designs were manipulated so that 2 levels of form (leaderless group discussions and role-play exercises) were crossed with 2 levels of content (cooperative and competitive task designs). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and confirmatory factor analysis procedures applied to multitrait–multimethod ratings of 89 high school student assessees revealed that most of the variance in the ratings was explained by exercises and not dimensions. Exercise form accounted for 16% of method variance, whereas exercise content had near zero effect. The form effect was primarily due to higher correlations of dimension ratings across role-play exercises. Practical implications and future directions for exercise design research are discussed. Reflections of a 40-year exploration. A scientific view on homosexuality

The author documents her experiences as she researched homosexual men. She discusses the adverse conditions that potentially threatened her achieving her research goals, including the demand of university officials that the research be conducted at the university. As confidentiality was imperative, the author insisted on conducting interviews at her home office. Starting in 1953 she received grants from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to research male homosexuality and in 1969 proposed an agenda outlining research and policy issues at NIMH. Hooker recently received a trust fund for almost a half million dollars from a gay man she had interviewed in the late 1950s to conduct research for the understanding of gay men and lesbians. The lexical nature of syntactic ambiguity resolution.

Ambiguity resolution is a central problem in language comprehension. Lexical and syntactic ambiguities are standardly assumed to involve different types of knowledge representations and be resolved by different mechanisms. An alternative account is provided in which both types of ambiguity derive from aspects of lexical representation and are resolved by the same processing mechanisms. Reinterpreting syntactic ambiguity resolution as a form of lexical ambiguity resolution obviates the need for special parsing principles to account for syntactic interpretation preferences, reconciles a number of apparently conflicting results concerning the roles of lexical and contextual information in sentence processing, explains differences among ambiguities in terms of ease of resolution, and provides a more unified account of language comprehension than was previously available.
