Intermediate host snails of schistosomiasis were surveyed in this study to determine their abundance and distribution in the lake and land aquatic habitats of Lake Victoria basin of Kenya. Several sites were sampled at eight locations, both in the lake and on the land. The habitat and/or vegetation type (i.e. open water, hippo grass, hyacinth, ambatch trees, other vegetation, stream, swamp, pond, dam) of the sampled aquatic sites within the locations were also differentiated, water physicochemical parameters were determined, and the abundance of different species or taxa of phytoplankton and zooplankton were enumerated and correlated with the abundance of schistosomiasis snails in the sites. The results indicated significantly more Biomphalaria sudanica snails than Bulinus africanus snails in different physical habitats on land (Student's t‐test, P < 0.05), as well as in different locations on land (Student's t‐test, P = 0.026). Regression analyses revealed that several physicochemical parameters, including dissolved oxygen (R2 = ?0.659; n = 8; P = 0.014), pH (R2 = 0.728; n = 8; P = 0.007) and turbulence (R2 = ?0.616; n = 8; P = 0.02), were predictive of Biomphalaria spp. abundance, while pH (R= 0.610; n = 8; P = 0.02) and turbulence (R= ?0.578; n = 8; P = 0.028) were predictive of Bulinus spp. abundance in different locations in the lake. Cyanobacteria (R= 0.638; n = 8; P = 0.02) and chlorophyceae (R2 = ?0.50; n = 8; P = 0.05) were shown to be predictive of both Biomphalaria spp. and Bulinus spp. abundance in different locations in the lake. Zooplankton abundance varied significantly between different locations in the lake (One‐way anova , P < 0.001). Bosmina spp. were found to be predictive of both Biomphalaria spp. (R= ?0.627; n = 8; P = 0.01) and Bulinus spp. (R= ?0.50; n = 8; P = 0.05) in different locations in the lake. The results from this study will help inform policy regarding control measures for schistosomias and intermediate snail hosts in Lake Victoria waters, as well as in adjacent terrestrial aquatic habitats and even beyond.  相似文献

The Pacific Tracker (PacTrac) is a computer program designed to analyse food intakes of individuals from the Pacific Region. PacTrac’s original output included servings of daily intake of food groups according to the United States Food Guide Pyramid, nutrient intake recommendations, and a comparison to other national nutrition recommendations. PacTrac was made available for public use through the Hawaii Foods website (hawaiifoods.hawaii.edu). PacTrac2 is an updated and expanded version of PacTrac that uses the United States MyPyramid/MyPlate food groups in household units of daily intake, rather than servings. In addition, the PacTrac2 includes a physical activity analysis tool which quantifies minutes of physical activities and their intensities based on energy estimates from the compendium of physical activity and research on children. An Expert System (ES) – a computerised decision tree to guide behaviour change – was developed using information on self-efficacy and stage of readiness to change, and the fruit and vegetable intake and physical activity information from PacTrac2. The ES produces reports for the child, the parent/guardian, and the child’s physician with child-specific strategies, targeted behavioural information, and feedback tailored to the child. PacTrac2-ES was designed for the Pacific Kids DASH for Health (PacDASH) intervention study, conducted in the Kaiser Permanente health care system in Hawaii. The intervention is based on the child’s self-efficacy and stage of readiness to change intake of fruits and vegetables and physical activity, with a goal of maintaining body weight to prevent obesity. The intervention is complemented with stage-based mailers addressing the environment for physical activity and fruit and vegetable intake and newsletters that address related behaviours (sedentary activity and a DASH eating approach). This project is the first to expand the PacTrac to contain children’s foods and physical activities from the Pacific Region and to use current US MyPyramid/MyPlate food and physical activity analysis and guidance systems, and to develop and implement an Expert System for fruits, vegetables and physical activity of 5–8-year-old children. The PacTrac2-ES was used in the PacDASH study and will be used for other programs to promote healthy eating and physical activity of children in the Pacific Region.  相似文献

Low inherent soil fertility in the highly weathered and leached soils largely accounts for low and unsustained crop yields in most African countries. But in particular, the major nutrients, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), are commonly deficient in these soils. This scenario of nutrient depletion is reflected in food deficits and hence the food aid received continuously, specifically in sub-Saharan Africa. Undoubtedly, substantial efforts have been made in the continent to replenish the fertility of degraded soils in attempts to raise crop yields, towards self-sufficiency and export. Such efforts consist of applications of both organic and inorganic resources to improve the nutrient status of soils and enhanced nutrient uptake by crops, provided that soil moisture is adequate. Overall, positive crop responses to these materials have been obtained. Thus in the East African region, maize (staple) yields have been raised in one growing season from below 0.5 t/ha without nutrient inputs, to 3–5 t/ha from various nutrient amendments at the smallhold farm level. However, in spite of the positive crop responses to nutrient inputs, farmers are generally slow to adopt the soil fertility management technologies. In this paper we review the impact of some technologies, focussing the use of nutrient resources of different characteristics (qualities) in relation to improved crop yields, with an overall goal to enhance technology adoption. Thus, inorganic resources or fertilizers often give immediate crop responses, but their use or adoption is rather restricted to large-scale farmers who can afford to buy these materials. Organic resources, which include crop residues, water hyacinth and agroforestry shrubs and trees, are widely distributed, but they are generally of low quality, reflecting the need to apply large quantities to meet crop nutrient demands. Moreover, most organics will add N mainly to soils. On the other hand, phosphate rocks of varying reactivity are found widely in Africa and are refined elsewhere to supply soluble P sources. The recently developed soil fertility management options in East Africa have targeted the efficient use of N and P by crops and the integrated nutrient management approach. Some people have also felt that the repackaging of inputs in small, affordable quantities, such as the PREP-PAC described in this paper, may be an avenue to attract smallhold farmers to use nutrient inputs. Nonetheless, crop responses to nutrient inputs vary widely within and across agroecozones (AEZs), suggesting specificity in recommendations. We highlight this observation in a case study whereby eight soil fertility management options, developed independently, are being tested side-by-side at on-farm level. Farmers will be empowered to identify technologies from their own choices that are agronomically effective and economically friendly. This approach of technology testing and subsequent adoption is recommended for technology development in future.  相似文献

Low rainfall has been blamed for the recent crop failure in Kongwa district, within Tanzania’s Central Zone, when 310 out of a total of 331.2 mm of rainfall were concentrated into the first 4 months (November to February) of the 2008-09 cropping season. In May 2009, farmers in this district, expected yields from early maturing (short/intermediate) varieties of sorghum, such as Macia and Pato that were late planted in January and February, to be less than 250 kg/ha. They complained that late delivery of seed of these varieties had led to the poor yields. Records kept by thirty seven subsistence farmers throughout the cropping season indicated that an average of 62 kg of sorghum grain of both early and late maturing varieties was harvested per household by June 2009. This is sufficient for just 14 day’s food supply for an average household comprising three adults, two adolescents (aged 10–18 years) and two children (aged less than 10 years). In addition, each household had accrued financial losses, averaging Tsh64, 527.65 (€33.79) from expenditure on wasted inputs. Furthermore, the high incidence of Covered Kernel Smut in sorghum fields suggested that farmers had been supplied with contaminated seed, while the limited availability of seed of the Striga-resistant sorghum varieties, Hakika and Wahi, had allowed this parasitic weed to flourish in their fields. It was estimated that these two pests could have caused sorghum losses in excess of 50%. Each household that was impoverished by this crop failure will have to raise an average of Tsh436, 070 (€228.36) to cover its grain deficit until June 2010.  相似文献

The rise of antibiotic resistance, especially in Staphylococcus aureus, and the increasing death rate due to multiresistant bacteria have been well documented. The need for new chemical entities and/or the identification of novel targets for antibacterial drug development is high. Lipoteichoic acid (LTA), a membrane-attached anionic polymer, is important for the growth and virulence of many Gram-positive bacteria, and interest has been high in the discovery of LTA biosynthesis inhibitors. Thus far, only a handful of LTA biosynthesis inhibitors have been described with moderate (MIC=5.34 μg mL−1) to low (MIC=1024 μg mL−1) activities against S. aureus. Herein we describe the identification of novel compounds that potently inhibit LTA biosynthesis in S. aureus, displaying impressive antibacterial activities (MIC as low as 0.25 μg mL−1) against methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). Under similar in vitro assay conditions, these compounds are 4-fold more potent than vancomycin and 8-fold more potent than linezolid against MRSA.  相似文献

This paper is based on a review of the effectiveness of solar home systems (SHS) in Africa in meeting users expectations on a service based analytical approach. Various projects have deployed SHS on the promise that they are cost-effective, can meet end-user demands, have ability to alleviate poverty, can save time and reduce emissions. However, a close review of the actual cost of these systems given the services they provide indicates most of the promises remain unmet and hence questions the wisdom of using public funds to support the system at the expense of more appropriate technologies.  相似文献

Study of charge trapping and conduction in pure and iodine doped biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) is presented. Structural and chemical modifications induced by iodine were investigated using X-ray, optical and infrared methods. Optical spectra of doped BOPP show absorption at 290 nm from charge transfer complexes. X-ray examination revealed a decrease in crystallinity and crystallite size after doping. The effect of iodine on charge trapping was determined by thermally stimulated current technique. Deep traps (120°C peak) at crystalline-amorphous interfaces are destroyed by iodine, which provides new traps (68°C peak) with activation energy 0.9 eV. Pressure dependence of conductivity indicates ionic conduction in pure samples and electronic conduction in doped samples. Steady state currents in 0.5%wt iodine doped BOPP were measured for fields 1 to 5×105 V cm-1 and at elevated temperatures 22 to 50°C. Iodine enhances conductivity by ~700× in pure BOPP and the steady state conductivity shows a good fit of the 3-D Poole-Frenkel theory to the experiment. It is proposed that trapped electrons (arising due to donor-acceptor action) thermally released through PF lowering, predominantly contribute to the conduction  相似文献

Human thyroid carcinomas have been induced following exposure of SV40-immortalized human thyroid epithelial cells in vitro to single doses (0.14 Gy to 1.57 Gy) of 3.26 MeV alpha-particles from a plutonium 238 source. Tumours were detected between 50 and 160 days following subcutaneous transplantation of the irradiated cells in athymic mice. No tumours were observed following transplantation of unirradiated cells. The relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of the alpha-particles, estimated from cell survival curves, was 4.8 at 50% survival and 3.3 at 5% survival. A first estimate of the RBE at peak tumour induction was 3.8. This system provides a means of studying the mechanisms of tumourigenesis in human thyroid epithelial cells induced by ionizing radiations, including tumours induced by single alpha particles such as from environmental natural radon and polonium and artificial plutonium and americium, and those induced by beta- or Auger-emissions from particular iodine isotopes.  相似文献
