Bio-hydrogenated diesel (BHD) is a second generation biofuel that can be produced from vegetable oil and hydrogen via hydroprocessing. BHD is considered as one of alternative and renewable energy. This work presents evaluation of environmental impacts of BHD produced from palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD) compared to fatty acid methyl ester (FAME). Greenhouse gas emission, energy consumption, and overall environmental impacts are assessed. System boundary is from palm oil cultivation to BHD production. The functional unit is defined as 1 kg of fuel produced at the plant. The results indicate that energy consumption of BHD-PFAD is 1.18 times higher than that of BHD-FAME, while giving GHG emission 13.56 times lower than that of BHD-FAME. The results of overall environmental impacts indicated that BHD-PFAD was 3.58 greater than that of BHD-FAME.  相似文献

In this work, composite membranes for a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) were prepared using a spraying method to improve cell performance especially at a high methanol concentration. Nafion polymer and mordenite as a filler were used for the composite membrane preparation using a spraying method and a conventional solution casting method and the membranes from the two methods were compared. SEM images showed that a more homogeneous composite membrane could be obtained using the spraying method. The effect of mordenite content was also studied. The membranes were consequently characterized and tested in DMFC operation. The results were compared to those prepared using the solution casting method at 30, 50, and 70 °C with methanol concentrations of 2, 4, and 8 M. It was found that the membrane with 5 wt.% mordenite from the spraying method showed a vast improvement in DMFC performance. When the cell was operated at 70 °C, the maximum power density of 5 wt.% mordenite from the spraying method was higher than that of commercial membrane and 5 wt.% from the solution casting method. Power densities from the 5 wt.% sprayed membrane were higher by around 29%, 40%, and 60% at 2, 4, and 8 M methanol concentration, respectively.  相似文献

The interaction between L929 cells and carboxymethylchitosan (CM-chitosan)-based hydrogels, hydrogels from pure CM-chitosan and its blends, was examined in this study. Cytotoxicity of all materials was also assessed. The cellular morphology and behavior on the surfaces of the hydrogels were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effects of various parameters, e.g., type and content of blended polymers, surface structure of hydrogels, and steaming condition used for the preparation of the hydrogels, on the cell-material response were investigated. The results of the cytotoxicity test revealed that all hydrogels were non-cytotoxic. The SEM micrographs demonstrated that the cells proliferated and spread onto a porous CM-chitosan sample. Better cell spreading was found on a flat surface of a CM-chitosan film. Rounded cells were observed when poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was incorporated into CM-chitosan. Fewer cells were found when the content of PVA increased. Spherical clusters of the aggregated cells existed in the blends with ultra high viscosity carboxymethylcellulose (CM-cellulose). In contrast, with the use of low viscosity CM-cellulose, the cells appeared more spreading. The attached cells on the CM-chitosan film steamed at the highest temperature and longest period appeared to spread the most among all tested steaming conditions.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine if augmented reality image overlay and laser guidance systems can assist medical trainees in learning the correct placement of a needle for percutaneous facet joint injection. The Perk Station training suite was used to conduct and record the needle insertion procedures. A total of 40 volunteers were randomized into two groups of 20. 1) The Overlay group received a training session that consisted of four insertions with image and laser guidance, followed by two insertions with laser overlay only. 2) The Control group received a training session of six classical freehand insertions. Both groups then conducted two freehand insertions. The movement of the needle was tracked during the series of insertions. The final insertion procedure was assessed to determine if there was a benefit to the overlay method compared to the freehand insertions. The Overlay group had a better success rate (83.3% versus 68.4%, p=0.002), and potential for less tissue damage as measured by the amount of needle movement inside the phantom (3077.6 mm(2) versus 5607.9 mm(2) , p =0.01). These results suggest that an augmented reality overlay guidance system can assist medical trainees in acquiring technical competence in a percutaneous needle insertion procedure.  相似文献

The effects of chitin, chitosan, and their derivatives on in vitro human blood coagulation and platelet activation were comparatively studied. The coagulation was assessed by the measure of the whole blood clotting time (WHBCT) and plasma recalcification time (PRT). The tested materials were chitin, chitosan, partially N‐acetylated chitosan (PNAC), N,O‐carboxymethylchitosan (NOCC), N‐sulfated chitosan, N‐(2‐hydroxy)propyl‐3‐trimethylammonium chitosan chloride, and SPONGOSTAN® standard (a positive control). The results revealed that the WHBCTs of whole blood mixed with chitin, chitosan, NOCC, or SPONGOSTAN® standard were significantly decreased with respect to that of the pure whole blood (a blank control) (P < 0.05), while the WHBCT value of whole blood mixed with PNAC was not significantly reduced. However, the presence of PNAC significantly lowered the PRT value, similar to the addition of chitin, NOCC, or SPONGOSTAN® standard. Chitosan was found to reduce PRT, but not significantly. In the platelet adhesion and activation studies, the morphology of platelets adherent to the film surfaces of tested materials was examined using a scanning electron microscopic technique. Because of their effective coagulation activites, chitosan, PNAC, and NOCC were further evaluated to determine how platelets behaved when in contact with these film samples for given periods. Cleaner energy production system such as direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs) are considered as an alternative source for generating cleaner energy. Studies based on design of catalysts, electrodes design, proton exchange membrane, and flow field were conducted for improving its performance characteristic such as power density. However, the less focus was paid on determining the operating conditions considering the uncertainties that will result in an increase of power density of DAFCs. Therefore, the present work proposes a novel comprehensive procedure involving experimental study and evolutionary approach of genetic programming (GP) in formulation of robust power density models for DAFCs. Two uncertainties such as the selection of objective function and variations in measurement of operating conditions are incorporated in framework of GP. The power density models incorporate the formulation of new objective function in GP that will result in higher accuracy of the models. Experiments performed on DAFCs validate performance of the models. Simulation profiler is then generated for models to verify its robustness in uncertain operating conditions. The inferences on relationships between power density and operating conditions for DAFCs are made by surface analysis of the models.  相似文献

Fifteen Thai herbal teas in comparison with teas of Camellia sinensis, were studied for their antioxidants and anti-glycation properties in correlation with their total phenolics, flavonoids, and non-flavonoids contents. Significant differences were observed among the tea infusions. Only stevia and sappan herbal teas had primary antioxidants and anti-glycation capacities comparable to C. sinensis. However, purple velvet, mulberry and false mallow herbal teas were exceptionally stronger in metal chelating capacity than the C. sinensis teas. Principal component analysis showed that total phenolics, particularly flavonoids highly correlated with primary antioxidants and anti-glycation. Cluster analysis showed that the properties of stevia and sappan herbal teas were similar to green, black and oolong teas. Some common, but rarely mentioned, Thai herbal teas could be choices of interest for healthy beverages and could be new dietary sources for bioactive compounds.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC, SaranR F-310) films containing sorbic acid (0%, 1.5%, and 3.0% w/v) were prepared with use of a solvent-casting method and were then placed between slices of commercially produced beef bologna that were previously surface-inoculated with L. monocytogenes at 103 or 105 CFU/g. In addition, cubes of commercial Cheddar cheese were surface-inoculated to contain 103 or 105 Listeria monocytogenes colony-forming units (CFU) /g and then wrapped with the sorbic acid-containing films. Films containing 1.5% and 3.0% (w/ v) sorbic acid prevented growth of L. monocytogenes on bologna slices with populations as much as 7.1 logs lower after 28 d of storage at 4 °C compared with the sorbic acid-free controls. In contrast, numbers of Listeria remained relatively stable on Cheddar cheese with populations decreasing < 1.3 logs after 35 d of storage. With use of the sorbic acid-containing films, common spoilage organisms were also inhibited on both products. After 28 d of contact with bologna and Cheddar cheese, these films retained 7% and 60% of their original sorbic acid content, respectively, with the control film retaining 85% of its original sorbic acid content. Given these findings, sorbic acid-containing films may be useful in enhancing the safety and shelf-life of ready-to-eat delicatessen products.  相似文献

The study of the interfacial stress transfer for glass fibres in polymer composites through the fragmentation test requires certain assumptions, such as a constant interfacial shear stress. In order to map the local interfacial properties of a composite, both Raman spectroscopy and luminescence spectroscopy have been independently used. Unlike other polymer fibre composites, the local strain state of a glass fibre cannot be obtained using Raman spectroscopy, since only very broad and weak peaks are obtainable. This study shows that when single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are added to the silane sizing as a strain sensor, it becomes possible to map the local fibre strain in glass fibres using Raman spectroscopy. Moreover, if this model glass fibre contains a small amount of Sm2O3, as one of the components, luminescence spectroscopy can be simultaneously used to confirm this local fibre strain. A combined micromechanical properties study of stress transfer at the fibre–matrix interface using luminescence spectroscopy, together with Raman spectroscopy, is therefore reported. The local strain behaviour of both Sm3+ doped glass and SWNTs in the silane coating are shown to be consistent with a shear-lag model. This indicates that Sm3+ dopants and SWNTs are excellent sensors for the local deformation of glass fibre composites.  相似文献
