A simple but comprehensive model considering homogeneous and micellar nucleation, coagulation, entry of radicals to particles and to micelles and radicals' exit from particles, is presented. The model is validated, in a starved semicontinuous heterophase polymerization of ethyl methacrylate, at three monomer addition rates. The model accurately describes the overall and instantaneous conversion, the average particle density and diameter, and the number and weight average molar masses evolutions over time. It is found that even though the average number of radicals is much smaller than 0.5, the system is not 0-1. An empirical function was used to describe the gel effect. The homogeneous nucleation was the prevailing mechanism for particle formation and large exit rates of radicals were observed. POLYM. ENG. Mobile ad hoc networks rely on the co-operation of devices that route for each other. This immediately presents security problems. Each device's data passes through the not so friendly hands of other devices. Forwarding devices must use their processing power and battery power to route packets for others. When bandwidth is limited they must also use bandwidth that they might want to use for themselves. These are not great issues with the first incarnations of ad hoc networks — military systems or others where all the devices are owned by a single organisation. However, if ad hoc networks are to be generally deployed and become an alternative or adjunct to future cellular systems, then ways to encourage co-operation are required. The structure of a mammalian class IV alcohol dehydrogenase has been determined by peptide analysis of the protein isolated from rat stomach. The structure indicates that the enzyme constitutes a separate alcohol dehydrogenase class, in agreement with the distinct enzymatic properties; the class IV enzyme is somewhat closer to class I (the "classical" liver alcohol dehydrogenase; approximately 68% residue identities) than to the other classes (II, III, and V; approximately 60% residue identities), suggesting that class IV might have originated through duplication of an early vertebrate class I gene. The activity of the class IV protein toward ethanol is even higher than that of the classical liver enzyme. Both Km and kcat values are high, the latter being the highest of any class characterized so far. Structurally, these properties are correlated with replacements at the active site, affecting both substrate and coenzyme binding. In particular, Ala-294 (instead of valine) results in increased space in the middle section of the substrate cleft, Gly-47 (instead of a basic residue) results in decreased charge interactions with the coenzyme pyrophosphate, and Tyr-363 (instead of a basic residue) may also affect coenzyme binding. In combination, these exchanges are compatible with a promotion of the off dissociation and an increased turnover rate. In contrast, residues at the inner part of the substrate cleft are bulky, accounting for low activity toward secondary alcohols and cyclohexanol. Exchanges at positions 259-261 involve minor shifts in glycine residues at a reverse turn in the coenzyme-binding fold. Clearly, class IV is distinct in structure, ethanol turnover, stomach expression, and possible emergence from class I.  相似文献

We describe the lens design for a twin-imaging white-light interferometer in which the interference pattern at the exit-pupil plane is the cosine transform of the spatial-intensity distribution of the object. The achromatic condition in terms of optical power is derived. The analysis of the transform aberration shows that the even aberrations, e.g., spherical aberration and field curvature, do not degrade the cosine transform and need not be corrected. This significant simplification permits us to design systems with good performance and uncomplicated lens structures. We present a lens design with three elements and a length of 320 mm. The system is capable of resolving more than 10(6) pixels with an operating spectral bandwidth of 100 nm. The results of an experiment with an early four-element design are also presented.  相似文献

Despite the fact that target antigens and the genetic basis of several autoimmune diseases are now better understood, the initial events leading to a loss of tolerance towards self-components remain unknown. One of the most attractive explanations for autoimmune phenomena involves various infections as possible natural events capable of initiating the process in genetically predisposed individuals. The most accepted explanation of how infection causes autoimmunity is based on the concept of "molecular mimicry" (similarity between the epitopes of an autoantigen and the epitopes in the environmental antigen). Infectious stimuli may also participate in the development of autoimmunity by inducing an increased expression of stress proteins (hsp), chaperones and transplantation antigens, which leads to abnormal processing and presentation of self antigens. Superantigens are considered to be one of the most effective bacterial components to induce inflammatory reactions and to take part in the development and course of autoimmune mechanisms. It has long been known that defects in the host defense mechanism render the individual susceptible to infections caused by certain microorganisms. Impaired exclusion of microbial antigens can lead to chronic immunological activation which can affect the tolerance to self components. Defects in certain components of the immune system are associated with a higher risk of a development of autoimmune disease. The use of animal models for the studies of human diseases with immunological pathogenesis has provided new insights into the influence of immunoregulatory factors and the lymphocyte subsets involved in the development of disease. One of the most striking conclusion arising from work with genetically engineered immunodeficient mouse models is the existence of a high level of redundancy of the components of the immune system. However, when genes encoding molecules involved in T cell immunoregulatory functions are deleted, spontaneous chronic inflammation of the gut mucosa (similar to human inflammatory bowel disease) develops. Surprisingly, when such immunocompromised animals were placed into germfree environment, intestinal inflammation did not develop. Impairment of the mucosal immune response to the normal bacterial flora has been proposed to play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of chronic intestinal inflammation. The use of immunodeficient models colonized with defined microflora for the analysis of immune reactivity will shed light on the mode of action of different immunologically important molecules responsible for the delicate balance between luminal commensals, nonspecific and specific components of the mucosal immune system.  相似文献

The subgraph homeomorphism problem has been shown by Robertson and Seymour to be polynomial-time solvable for any fixed pattern graph H. The result, however, is not practical, involving constants that are worse than exponential in |H|. Practical algorithms have only been developed for a few specific pattern graphs, the most recent of these being the wheels with four and five spokes. This paper looks at the subgraph homeomorphism problem where the pattern graph is a wheel with six spokes. The main result is a theorem characterizing graphs that do not contain subdivisions of W 6. We give an efficient algorithm for solving the subgraph homeomorphism problem for W 6. We also give a strengthening of the previous W 5 result.  相似文献

The propagation of electrical trees is of a particular interest for the power engineering industry as it is one of the major causes for breakdown in high voltage equipments. Composites, materials with barriers and a surrounding polymer matrix are used to extend time to breakdown of the insulations. Since the material, structure or processing of the barriers are various and can determine time to breakdown significantly, the major influences of barriers on the propagation of electrical trees is described in this paper in experiments and numerical simulations. Although it was the motivation, to determine tree growth in the composite structure of mica-epoxy winding insulations, the results can also be used for other composite materials. The trees grew in needle-plane samples and their growth characteristic was optically analysed. The results show that tree propagation can be slowed down when introducing a barrier between the needle and the plane electrode and may cause significantly increased time to breakdown values. The increase depends on the barrier materials used, their thickness, the dielectric strength of the interface to the surrounding epoxy resin and the width of the barrier. When choosing multiple barriers, their arrangement influences time to breakdown significantly. Overlapped barriers show much higher time to breakdown values than impinged ones. From the results, it can be concluded that the selection of the barrier materials, their processing and their arrangement play a major role towards time to breakdown of composite insulation materials.  相似文献

During a screening of Salmonella enterica in foods of animal origin four isolates of serovar Typhimurium carrying hybrid virulence-resistance plasmids were detected. Three of them, one from pork and two from chicken meat, contained pUO-StVR2, a derivative of the pSLT virulence plasmid with the blaOXA-1, catA1, aadA1, sulI and tet(B) genes, which confer resistance to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin-spectinomycin, sulfonamides and tetracycline, respectively. The fourth isolate, from pork, harbored a pUO-StVR2 variant (termed ν8) with an additional dfrA10 gene responsible for resistance to trimethoprim. This gene is part of the orf513-dfrA10-qacEΔ1-sul1 element characteristically found in complex class 1 integrons. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis identified two XbaI-BlnI combined profiles: X2-B2 generated from the three pUO-StVR2 isolates, and X12-B17 shown by the pUO-StVR2-ν8 isolate. The same profiles have also been found in clinical and ill pig isolates, supporting chicken and pork meat as vehicles for transmission of Typhimurium carrying pUO-StVR2-like plasmids.  相似文献

The brain's astrocytes play key roles in normal and pathological brain processes. Targeting small molecules to astrocytes in the presence of the many other cell types in the brain will provide useful tools for their visualization and manipulation. Herein, we explore the functional consequences of synthetic modifications to a recently described astrocyte marker composed of a bright rhodamine-based fluorophore and an astrocyte-targeting moiety. We altered the nature of the targeting moiety to probe the dependence of astrocyte targeting on hydrophobicity, charge, and pKa when exposed to astrocytes and neurons isolated from the mouse cortex. We found that an overall molecular charge of +2 and a targeting moiety with a heterocyclic aromatic amine are important requirements for specific and robust astrocyte labeling. These results provide a basis for engineering astrocyte-targeted molecular tools with unique properties, including metabolite sensing or optogenetic control.  相似文献
