Comparative efficiency of maltodextrin and protein in the production of spray-dried tamarind pulp powder

The potential of maltodextrin (DE 20) and soya protein isolate (SPI) in spray drying of tamarind pulp was compared. Powder recovery was zero when the tamarind pulp was spray dried alone. A greater amount of maltodextrin (MD; 55%) was required for successful spray drying of tamarind pulp, whereas a small amount of SPI (20%) was needed for the same purpose. The study revealed that the mechanism for the increase in product recovery with the addition of MD is due to the increase in overall glass transition temperature of tamarind pulp powder. However, using SPI, preferential migration of the protein to the surface of droplets/particles resulting in the formation of a glassy skin was responsible for a reduction in stickiness between the particles and dryer wall and hence increased the powder recovery. The potential of SPI in reducing powder hygroscopicity was almost comparable to that of MD, confirming its efficiency as a drying aid. Tamarind pulp powders produced with SPI had a larger particle size with a wrinkled particle surface morphology and high flowability compared to powders produced with MD. The study showed the excellent potential of SPI as a drying aid in production of quality tamarind pulp powder.     

Dielectric properties and electromagnetic interference shielding studies of nickel oxide and tungsten oxide reinforced polyvinylchloride nanocomposites

ABSTRACT

Polyvinylchloride (PVC)/nickel oxide (NiO)/tungsten oxide (WO₃) nanocomposite films were prepared via solution casting technique. The crystallinity, morphology, and the analysis of dispersion state of PVC/NiO/WO₃ nanocomposite was carried out using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The dielectric studies of nanocomposite films were investigated and a maximum dielectric constant of 2.3 with dielectric loss (tan δ) of 2.4 was attained. The EMI shielding studies were carried out in the X and Ku-band frequency range (8 GHz-18 GHz). The maximum SE of 15.78 dB in X-band and 12.05 dB in Ku-band was achieved for 75/20/5 compositions of the PVC/NiO/WO₃ nanocomposite.     

Development of image processing based system to study yarn structure during extension

The present study describes design and development and use of an image processing system to characterize and visualize the configuration of fibers in yarn in extended mode. An especially dedicated instrument and software for data acquisition and analysis are the unique features of the system. It is capable of grabbing the images of extended yarn in two orthogonal planes. The software can acquire data from these two orthogonal planes. The three‐dimensional trajectory of whole length of different colored tracer fibers can be plotted and can be viewed at different angles. The image processing system along with multi‐colored tracer fiber technique has been used for quantitative analysis of changes in the internal structure of ring yarn on extension.

Synthesis,Characterization and Evaluation of the Surface Active Properties of Novel Cationic Imidazolium Gemini Surfactants

New imidazolium gemini surfactants were synthesized by reaction of epichlorohydrin with long chain fatty alcohols furnishing products 2-(alkoxymethyl)oxirane followed by their subsequent treatment with imidazole resulting in the formation of 1-(1H-imidazol-1-yl-3 alkoxy)propane-2-ol which on subsequent treatment with 1,2-dibromoethane and 1,3-dibromopropane resulted in the formation of title gemini surfactants:1,2-bis(1(3-alkoxy-2-hydroxypropyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium)ethane bromide (7), 1,3-bis(1(3-alkoxy-2-hydroxypropyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium)propane bromide (8), 1,2-bis(1(3-alkoxy-2-hydroxypropyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium)ethane bromide (9), 1,3-bis(1(3-alkoxy-2-hydroxypropyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium)propane bromide (10), 1,2-bis (1(3-alkoxy-2-hydroxypropyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium)ethane bromide (11) and 1,3-bis (1(3-alkoxy-2-hydroxypropyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium)propane bromide (12). Their identification was based on IR, ¹H-, ¹³C-NMR, DEPT, COSY and mass spectral studies. Their surface active properties were also evaluated on the basis of surface tension and conductivity measurements.     

Inflammatory pseudotumour of the trachea: report of a case in an eight-year-old child

A polypoid inflammatory pseudotumour was diagnosed in the trachea of an eight-year-old child who presented with asthmatic symptoms. The tumour showed 80 per cent blockage of the lower trachea and consisted of proliferating spindly fibroblastic cells admixed with a variable number of inflammatory cells. The literature on childhood inflammatory pseudotumours is reviewed together with the differential diagnosis of other polypoid mesenchymal tumours of the trachea.     

Primary spinal T-cell rich B-cell lymphoma: a case report

During my nursing career, I remember constantly being aware of patients who needed some emotional help--those who were frightened about a forthcoming operation, those who were shocked and despairing after being given their diagnosis and prognosis, others who were down in the dumps because they couldn't go home as soon as they had hoped. There were also the 'ward clowns' who tried to make everyone laugh with their good humour and little pranks, yet felt no less anxious, worried or depressed than anyone else. Patients seem to fit into categories: the nervous ones, the depressives, the jovial types, the moaners, those who demand attention and those who shun it. I feel sure that every nurse has noticed the different 'types' of people who fill hospital beds-ordinary people who seem to take on a new persona as soon as they get into their pyjamas and become a 'patient'. Somehow, their identity gets folded up and put away in their locker along with their outdoor clothes and other reminders of the outside world.     

Synthesis ofGEM-dibromocyclopropanoid fatty esters using phenyl (tribromomethyl) mercury

Thegem-dibromocyclopropanation of naturally occurring unsaturated hydroxy fatty esters, methyl ricinoleate (I) and methyl isoricinoleate (II), has been undertaken to provide compounds which might have potential utility. Phenyl(tribromomethyl)mercury reacts only with the carbon-carbon double bond of each substrate, leaving the OH group intact. The product, methyl 9,10-dibromomethylene-12-hydroxyoctadecanoate (III) and methyl 12,13-dibromomethylene-9-hydroxyoctadecanoate (IV), obtained from I and II, respectively, were characterized by elemental, infrared (IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analyses.

Mebendazole: New and efficient corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in acid medium

The inhibition performance of mebendazole, a drug, on mild steel in molar hydrochloric acid solution was studied by weight loss and electrochemical methods. The maximum inhibition efficiency 96.2% was observed in presence of 2.54 × 10⁻⁴ M inhibitor. Polarization measurements showed that the inhibitor is mixed type. Data obtained from EIS studies were analyzed to model inhibition process through appropriate equivalent circuit models. The results obtained from the different methods are in good agreement. The various thermodynamic parameters of dissolution and adsorption processes were evaluated in order to elaborate adsorption mechanism. Adsorption of inhibitor obeyed Langmuir adsorption isotherm model.
