OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to study the heterogeneity of drug response in fresh human ovarian tumors to chemotherapeutic agents in an in vitro chemosensitivity assay. STUDY DESIGN: This assay evaluates total tumor cell kill by measuring the intracellular adenosine triphosphate levels of untreated controls and drug-exposed cells at various doses after culture for 6 days. The surviving fraction is calculated by dividing the treated values with the control values. One hundred tumors were tested against four single drugs (cisplatin, the active metabolite of cytoxan, 4-hydroxyperoxy-cyclophosphamide, Taxol, and carboplatin) and two drug combinations (cisplatin plus 4-hydroxyperoxy-cyclophosphamide; cisplatin plus Taxol). RESULTS: There is great variation in the degree of cell death for single drugs and drug combinations among the 100 tumors tested. CONCLUSION: More effective clinical response to chemotherapy may be achieved in patients with ovarian cancer by selecting the most active drugs for chemotherapy, on the basis of in vitro chemosensitivity test results for individual patients.  相似文献

The software and hardware techniques to exploit the potential of multi-core processors are falling behind, even though the number of cores and cache levels per chip is increasing rapidly. There is no explicit communications support available, and hence inter-core communications depend on cache coherence protocols, resulting in demand-based cache line transfers with their inherent latency and overhead. In this paper, we present Software Controlled Eviction (SCE) to improve the performance of multithreaded applications running on multi-core processors by moving shared data to shared cache levels before it is demanded from remote private caches. Simulation results show that SCE offers significant performance improvement (8-28%) and reduces L3 cache misses by 88-98%.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Microbial behavior in batch reactors may be different from that in continuous flow reactors, which is expected to affect microbial response to heavy metal exposure. Four parallel continuous flow reactors and batch growth tests were used to investigate the single and joint toxicity of Zn and Cu to Artrobacter sp. JM018. RESULTS: The results indicated that Cu is more toxic than Zn under all conditions. In the batch reactors, all Zn concentrations showed a stimulatory effect on microbial growth. However in the continuous system, 125 µmol L?1 Zn exposure produced inhibition. In the case of mixed Zn and Cu exposures in the batch system, the presence of Zn reduced the severity of Cu inhibition, with a net impact of reduced growth in all cases, whereas in the continuous system microbial growth and substrate utilization rates sharply decreased and ceased. CONCLUSION: The results clearly showed that growth in batch reactors underestimated significantly the heavy metal inhibition, compared with the continuous system. Therefore, the results of batch reactor tests should not be used directly when heavy metal inhibition is to be interpreted for continuous flow systems. We study the ground-state properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with the short-range repulsion and gravitylike 1/r interatomic attraction in two-dimensions (2D). Using the variational approach, we obtain the ground-state energy and show that the condensate is stable for all interaction strenghts in 2D. We also determine the collective excitations at zero temperature using the time-dependent variational method. We analyze the properties of the Thomas-Fermi-gravity (TF-G) and gravity (G) regimes.   相似文献

A cluster analytic study was conducted to empirically derive behaviorally homogeneous subtypes of pervasive developmental disorders (PDD). Subjects were clustered based on a broad range of behavioral symptoms which characterize autism. Behavioral variables were measured using several of the standardized psychometric instruments most commonly employed in assessing autistic individuals. The cluster solution indicated the presence of four distinct groups. Validity checks generally confirmed significant between-group differences on independent measures of social, language, and stereotyped behaviors. In addition, the four-group cluster solution was compared to previously developed typological systems of PDD (i.e., subcategories based on IQ early onset, styles of social interaction, and DSM-III-R diagnosis). Results generally supported both the behavioral homogeneity of the four subgroups and also several important between-group differences. The potential utility of using cluster analyses to explore subtypes of PDD is discussed.  相似文献

Objective: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the bond strength of a new calcium silicate cement, Neo MTA Plus (Avalon Biomed Inc. Bradenton, FL, U.S.A) by comparing ProRoot MTA and Biodentine.

Material and Methods: Sixty dentin slices were instrumented to achieve a diameter of 1.3 mm. Group 1: white ProRoot MTA, group 2: Biodentine, group 3: Neo MTA Plus – G (powder mixed with gel), group 4: Neo MTA Plus – W (powder mixed with distilled water) were loaded into cavities. The push-out bond strength values were measured. Data were analyzed using Welch ANOVA with Bonferroni correction p = 0.05. Failure modes (adhesive, cohesive, and mixture) were analyzed.

Results: The highest bond strength value was recorded in Neo MTA Plus mixed with gel (5.23 ± 1.78 MPa), whereas white ProRoot MTA (2.57 ± 0.66 MPa) had the lowest. Bond strength values of Neo MTA Plus mixed either with gel or with distilled water were statistically different from both white ProRoot MTA and Biodentine (2.61 ± 0.70 MPa) (p < 0.05). Adhesive failure was predominantly observed in all groups.

Conclusion: Neo MTA Plus could be considered as alternatives to the ProRoot MTA and Biodentine due to its better performance in bonding to root dentin.  相似文献

Outstanding thermal transport properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) qualify them as possible candidates to be used as thermal management units in electronic devices. However, significant variations in the thermal conductivity (κ) measurements of individual CNTs restrict their utilizations for this purpose. In order to address the possible sources of this large deviation and to propose a route to solve this discrepancy, we systematically investigate the effects of varying concentrations of randomly distributed multiple defects (single and double vacancies, Stone-Wales defects) on the phonon transport properties of armchair and zigzag CNTs with lengths ranging between a few hundred nanometers to several micrometers, using both nonequilibrium molecular dynamics and atomistic Green's function methods. Our results show that, for both armchair and zigzag CNTs, κ converges nearly to the same values with different types of defects, at all lengths considered in this study. On the basis of the detailed mean free path analysis, this behavior is explained with the fact that intermediate and high frequency phonons are filtered out by defect scattering, while low frequency phonons are transmitted quasi-ballistically even for several micrometer long CNTs. Furthermore, an analysis of variances in κ for different defect concentrations indicates that defect scattering at low defect concentrations could be the source of large experimental variances, and by taking advantage of the possibility to create a controlled concentration of defects by electron or ion irradiation, it is possible to standardize κ with minimizing the variance. Our results imply the possibility of phonon engineering in nanostructured graphene based materials by controlling the defect concentration.  相似文献

Provides a historical review of theory development in the field of dual diagnosis. Dual diagnosis, defined in this instance as the co-occurrence of mental health disorders with mental retardation, has become a major area of clinical practice and research in the past 10 yrs. Whereas areas such as differential diagnosis, assessment, and prevalence have been major focuses of research, etiologies of dual diagnosis have received less attention. Current etiological theories have practical implications for the treatment and prevention of dual diagnoses and suggest important directions for future research. We demonstrate two-dimensional arrays of surface-emitting THz frequency photonic-crystal quantum cascade lasers covering a broad spectral range. The arrays are made of 16 unit elements, each of them spectrally single mode and featuring a narrow divergence emission pattern. The array emission frequencies cover a range of ≈0.2 THz around an emission frequency of ≈2.75 THz. Large size and small size devices have been developed. The former devices operate up to a maximum temperature of ≈90K with 2 to 3 mW output power in continuous wave regime.  相似文献
